Abstract The fern genus Tectaria has generally been placed in the family Tectariaceae or in subfamily Tectarioideae (placed in Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae or Polypodiaceae), both of which have been variously circumscribed in the past. Here we study for the first time the phylogenetic relationships of the associated genera Hypoderris (endemic to the Caribbean), Cionidium (endemic to New Caledonia) and Pseudotectaria (endemic to Madagascar and Comoros) using DNA sequence data. Based on a broad sampling of 72 species of eupolypods I (= Polypodiaceae sensu lato) and three plastid DNA regions (atpA, rbcL and the trnL-F intergenic spacer) we were able to place the three previously unsampled genera. -

Ramachandra1 1Energy and Wetlands Research Group, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore – 560 012 2Department of Botany, Yuvaraja’s College (Autonomous), University of Mysore, Mysore - 57005 ABSTRACT The present study deals with the diversity of pteridophytes in the wet evergreen forests of Sakleshpurtaluk of Hassan district in central Western Ghats. A significant portion of the study area comprises of the Gundia river catchment region which is considered to be the ‘hottest hotspot of biodiversity’ as it shelters numerous endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna. Survey of various macro and micro habitats was carried out in this region, also a haven for pteridophytes. A total of 45 species of pteridophytes from 19 families were recorded in the study. The presence of South Indian endemics like Cyathea nilgirensis, Bolbitissub crenatoides, B. semicordata and Osmunda huegeliana signifies the importance of this region as a crucial centre of pteridophytes. Similar regions in the Western Ghats, rich in network of perennial streams have been targeted widely for irrigation and power projects. With regard to an impending danger in the form a proposed hydro-electric project in the Gundia River, threatening the rich biodiversity, an overall ecological evaluation was carried out in the entire river basin. -

16 Fern classification ALAN R. SMITH, KATHLEEN M. PRYER, ERIC SCHUETTPELZ, PETRA KORALL, HARALD SCHNEIDER, AND PAUL G. WOLF 16.1 Introduction and historical summary / Over the past 70 years, many fern classifications, nearly all based on morphology, most explicitly or implicitly phylogenetic, have been proposed. The most complete and commonly used classifications, some intended primar• ily as herbarium (filing) schemes, are summarized in Table 16.1, and include: Christensen (1938), Copeland (1947), Holttum (1947, 1949), Nayar (1970), Bierhorst (1971), Crabbe et al. (1975), Pichi Sermolli (1977), Ching (1978), Tryon and Tryon (1982), Kramer (in Kubitzki, 1990), Hennipman (1996), and Stevenson and Loconte (1996). Other classifications or trees implying relationships, some with a regional focus, include Bower (1926), Ching (1940), Dickason (1946), Wagner (1969), Tagawa and Iwatsuki (1972), Holttum (1973), and Mickel (1974). Tryon (1952) and Pichi Sermolli (1973) reviewed and reproduced many of these and still earlier classifica• tions, and Pichi Sermolli (1970, 1981, 1982, 1986) also summarized information on family names of ferns. Smith (1996) provided a summary and discussion of recent classifications. With the advent of cladistic methods and molecular sequencing techniques, there has been an increased interest in classifications reflecting evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic studies robustly support a basal dichotomy within vascular plants, separating the lycophytes (less than 1 % of extant vascular plants) from the euphyllophytes (Figure 16.l; Raubeson and Jansen, 1992, Kenrick and Crane, 1997; Pryer et al., 2001a, 2004a, 2004b; Qiu et al., 2006). Its thin-walled sporangium with a vertical and interrupted annulus, round sorus with peltate indusium, and petiole with several vascular bundles place it in suborder Poly- podiineae, but more precise placement has eluded previous authors. Here we investigate its phylogenetic position using three plastid DNA markers, rbcL, rps4-trnS, and trnL-F, and a broad sampling of Polypodi- ineae. -

Only the recent opening of Myanmar offered the unique possibility to conduct species diversity and mountain ecology research in an area, which harbors the last remaining virtually untouched forests of the Himalayas and possibly of Southeast Asia. Although three extensive expeditions were able to collect a unique dataset, I am fully aware that our results are preliminary and this area offers more to explore. However, I hope that this thesis can contribute to a better understanding of mountain biodiversity patterns and may provide enough incentives for future projects. This cumulative thesis submitted here includes first evaluations of datasets from the expedition areas in northern Myanmar, and connects these data with those from other mountain areas of East and Southeast Asia (see the list below). During a sojourn of more than one hundred days, we observed and collected a comprehensive number of fern species as well as flowering plants and mosses. Here is given an enumeration of all pteridophytes collected on this trip. In this paper, however, only a list of the specific identifications of the collections has been made. In the course of the investigation of the fern flora of Thailand, we met with a good many facts new to science. This information will be forthcoming in other publications. It most resembles B. virens var. compacta and B. hainanensis. A phylogenetic tree of Taiwanese and other Asian species of Bolbitis species supports the recognition of the new species. Morphologically, the combination of anasto- mosing venation and fewer sterile pinnae are critical characters to discriminate B. lianhuachihensis from other Taiwanese Bolbitis species. Bolbitis lianhuachihensis can be further distinguished from B. virens var. -
Cuatro Nuevos Registros Para La Flora Hondureña Y Un
Artículo de investigación Cuatro nuevos registros para la flora hondureña y un listado preliminar de pteridófitas y licófitas para la Reserva del Hombre y Biósfera del Río Plátano, Honduras Four new records for the Honduran flora and a preliminary checklist of pteridophytes and lycophytes for the Río Plátano Man and Biosphere Reserve, Honduras Johan Reyes-Chávez1,2,4 , Alexander Rojas-Alvarado3 , Onán Reyes-Calderon1 Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: El grupo de pteridófitas y licófitas ha sido poco estudiado en Honduras, esto se ve reflejado en la Reserva del Hombre y Biosfera del Río Plátano (RHBRP) al solo tener reportadas 44 especies. El objetivo del presente estudio es presentar un listado preliminar de estos grupos, contabilizando las especies encontradas en sitios arqueológicos dentro del departamento Gracias a Dios y presentar cuatro nuevos registros para la flora de Honduras. Métodos: Como parte de los inventarios florísticos desarrollados entre agosto 2016 y septiembre 2017, se colectaron e identificaron en el municipio Brus Laguna un total de 58 especies de pteridófitas y licófitas no reportados previamente para la RHBRP, se actualizaron los nombres de las especies y se catalogaron las especies presentes en el área protegida. Resultados clave: Se incrementan a 103 especies los helechos reportados para la RHBRP, lo cual representa un aumento de 131%, y se suman tres nuevos registros del género Tectaria y uno de Adiantum, para Honduras. Conclusiones: Destaca la diversidad de estos grupos en zonas poco alteradas dentro de la RHBRP, especialmente en los ríos; sin embargo, también se observó un vacío de información en las zonas cercanas a los pueblos, áreas alteradas en la actualidad con necesidad de protección e investigación.
