WELCOME Welcome letter from Robert Rosen In 1984, I was swept away by the films I saw in Beijing, showcased by the China Film Association. As one of the first American film scholars to visit and teach film in China, I had the privilege of seeing a wide range of productions that were largely unknown to the outside world. Created largely by two newly empowered generations of talented filmmakers, the narratives were boldly provocative, and the elements of style were aesthetically innovative. It was clear to me that the new Chinese cinema fully deserved to engage, entertain, and astound global audiences. When I returned to the United States and resumed my post as the director of the UCLA Film and Television Archives, and later as Dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, I was passionately committed to doing all that I could to promote these powerful films and filmmakers as world-class cinema. Generations of new directors and new films since that time have continued to excite me. Today, as China’s cultural and economic influence grows, so too should its impact on international media culture. In pursuit of this goal and as an avid supporter of Chinese film, I am proud to be associated with the Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival. By showcasing fine films and talented directors, the festival brings today’s audiences the excitement of discovery that I first found in Beijing more than three decades ago. Enjoy! Robert Rosen Honorary President of the Advisory Board Welcome Letter from Baifan Xie Welcome to the 2018 Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival (LACFF)! We are excited to have you and cannot wait to share with you the amazing films at our festival this year, and to introduce you to the filmmakers and panelists we have invited this year.
