Adventure Catalog 2018 ADVENTURE CENTER A D V E N T U R E CATALOG 2018 - 2019 2 The Kitty Hawk Kites Story In 1973, I was captivated by a picture of someone flying a hang glider in Utah. Seeing this hang glider reignited in me a passion for flight initially sparked by the joy of building and flying kites as a child on the farm where I grew up in Missouri. By the time I saw that photograph in the Winston-Salem Journal, I had moved to North Carolina after graduating from Missouri University of Science & Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering and was working for AT&T as an ocean engineer. I had spent all my spare time exploring North Carolina, from the coast to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Inspired by the story of the Wright Brothers, who had traveled to Kitty Hawk for its wind and sand, I just knew Jockey’s Ridge would be the ideal place to learn to fly. I couldn’t imagine a better mountain site than the majestic Grandfather Mountain on the opposite end of the state to fly this portable, inexpensive flying machine, the hang glider, the Rogallo Wing; and all I could think about was how I was truly going to fly! Feeling inspired, I bought a mail order hang glider for about $600 and set off for Jockey’s Ridge to learn to fly with friends. We ran up and down the dunes until we figured it out. Just like the Wright Brothers, we were lifted from the soft and forgiving sand dunes with nice steady winds, and experienced the thrill of personal flight. The experience was even better than I expected so I couldn’t wait to share my passion for flying with everyone. As soon as I flew, I knew I wanted to spend my life Teaching the World to Fly. In the Spring of 1974, we founded Kitty Hawk Kites, with a business plan that included teaching people to fly and selling hang gliders. We began operating in an old garage with an outhouse across from Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head. We offered hang gliding lessons, sold and repaired hang gliders and sold T-Shirts and kites. Business was tough going and very seasonal, but it was fun and so personally rewarding to see others experience flight for the first time! After operating out of the garage for 5 years, we were able to get a loan to build a building for a store location. This is the current flagship location of Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head, featuring the Rogallo Tower. We had lots of help and support from the local community, the hang gliding community, and Francis and Gertrude Rogallo, inventors of the flexible wing, who then lived in Southern Shores, NC. OUR VISION: Since 1974, Kitty Hawk Kites has been “Teaching the World to Fly” by building communities of passionate employees and customers with our uplifting, exceptional service; unique, fun products; and adventure experiences in travel destinations. We create friendly, world-class products and environments that make people smile, lift their spirits, challenge them, and give them joyful, lifetime memories. 3 Following my dream of a mountain flight from Grandfather Mountain, I asked Hugh Morton, who owned most of the mountain near Boone, for permission to fly off the peak. Thankfully, Mr. Morton granted me permission, and on July 13, 1974, I was the first to fly a hang glider off the beautiful mountain. Mr. Morton fell in love with hang gliding after witnessing my flight and tirelessly promoted it through competitions, his photography and films. Fortunately for me, he became a lifelong friend and mentor. Kitty Hawk Kites, Inc. has grown to add many more selections to its retail offerings in over 20 stores along the coast of North Carolina, stores in Destin and Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Virginia Beach, Virginia and the Morningside Flight Park in New Hampshire. Throughout the years, Kitty Hawk Kites has grown to be the largest brick and mortar kite retailer in the United States, the leading out- door adventures company on the Outer Banks, the largest Hang Gliding School in the world, and one of the few Kiteboarding Resorts in America. We now offer over 25 Adventures, in addition to hang gliding. We still want to Teach to World to Fly; we want to lift people – whether literally in the air on a hang glider – or figuratively by the coolest toy or T-shirt they’ve ever seen! OUR MISSION: To be the leading company in adventure recreation and retail, by building a reputation for fun and excellence through dedication to customer service, quality, safety, and value. OUR PURPOSE: TO TEACH THE WORLD TO FLY! Thank you for being our guests! Whether it’s on Jockey’s Ridge, in one of our stores or on one of our many adventures, we want to teach you to fly! • Oregon Inlet Opened in 1846 As Water Rushed from the Sound to the Ocean
Oregon Inlet opened in 1846, when a big hurricane along the Outer Banks caused water to rush from the sound to the ocean. Since that time, the inlet has migrated steadily south at a rate of around 100 feet per year. A good measure of the inlet’s journey is the Bodie Island Lighthouse, which once stood at the margin of the inlet but is now 3 miles away. In 1962, the Bonner Bridge replaced the ferry that shuttled people and cars across Oregon Inlet. Construction of the bridge, with its high fixed-span, instantly stopped the long history if inlet migration. But sand continued to pour into the inlet from the north, the driving force behind the inlet’s southerly migration, creating ever-expanding navigation and dredging problems. After 40 years, the Bonner Bridge is rapidly deteriorating and two possible replacement alternatives are being evaluated: A bridge immediately parallel to the current bridge and a 17 mile-long bridge that would extend into Pamlico Sound, run along the backside of Pea Island and connect to Hatters Island at Rodanthe. The initial cost of constructing the Pamlico Sound Bridge is much higher than that of the Parallel Bridge. But the overall long-term costs of a Parallel Bridge greatly exceed those of the Pamlico Sound Bridge. This is because the Parallel Bridge requires the continued protection and maintenance of State Highway 12 on Pea Island. Over time, as the shoreline erodes back in response to a rising sea level, the cost of stabilizing Pea Island will become higher. Construction impacts to wetlands and sea grass beds are essentially the same for each bridge.

Although the act of riding a wave started as a religious/cultural tradition, surfing rapidly transformed into a global water sport. The popularity of surfing is the result of events, innovations, influential people (http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/9754themostinfluentialpeopleto thebirthofsurfing), and technological developments. Early surfers had to challenge the power of the oceans with heavy, finless surfboards. Today, surfing has evolved into a hightech extreme sport, in which hydrodynamics and materials play vital roles. Surfboard craftsmen have improved their techniques; wave riders have bettered their skills. The present and future of surfing can only be understood if we look back at its glorious past. From the rudimentary "caballitos de totora" to computerized shaping machines, there's an incredible trunk full of memories, culture, achievements and inventions to be rifled through. • A Kite Surfing Scenario
Biomechanics of extreme sports – a kite surfing scenario Lina Lundgren 1, Sofia Olandersson 1, Marita Hilliges 1, Anna-Lisa Osvalder 2 1Product Development in Healthcare, PRODEA research group, Halmstad University, Halmstad, Sweden Email: [email protected] 2 Department of Product- and Production Development, Division of Design Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden Do extreme sports contribute to higher biomechanical stress compared to other sports? Kite surfing is one of the upcoming popular extreme sports, where very few have studied the mechanical forces that act on the body. There are several factors that contribute to mechanical stress, and for preventing injuries it is of interest to investigate how these forces affect the body and how we can develop the equipment and prepare the athletes for making it as safe as possible. This project will study injury prevalence, motion analysis and mapping of forces and pressure during kite surfing. The outcome will be a better understanding of biomechanics of kite surfing and a construction for testing and training. biomechanics, kite surfing, injuries, muscle strength, motion analysis 1 Introduction Extreme sports are becoming more and more popular, and since these sports often are associated with higher risks than other sports (Slanger, Rudestam, 1997), it is also possible that the biomechanical stress is higher and contributes to more injuries. Kite surfing is a water sport where the practitioner goes on water with a board through the power of a kite 25 meters up in the air. The kite is attached to the body via a Force from harness around the waist or hip (see Fig.

  • Historic and Architectural Resources of Currituck County 1790-1958
NPS Form 10-900-a OMB No. 1024-0018 (8-86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Historic and Architectural Resources of Currituck County, 1790-1958 Section __E___ Page __1 =================================================================================== Introduction “When Nature came to design the topography of eastern North Carolina,” wrote North Carolina historian Charles Christopher Crittenden in 1936, “she almost persuaded herself to create a great maritime center.”1 The interplay between water and land in Currituck is key to understanding the history and evolution of the county. Although one of the oldest in the state of North Carolina, the county has also been one of the most overlooked. Piecing together the history of the county is difficult. Many of the records pertaining to the early history of Currituck have been lost or destroyed. A courthouse fire in 1842, for example, destroyed a substantial body of records, including marriage records. As a consequence, much of the county’s past lives on as oral history; written accounts tend to be either personal reminiscences or a recounting of events that have been passed orally through the different generations of a family. The history of the county remains to be written. A Geographical Overview of the County The most northeasterly of the one hundred North Carolina counties, Currituck is a peninsula: the land is long and narrow, low and even. The county consists of a mainland 1 Charles Christoper Crittenden, The Commerce of North Carolina 1763-1789. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1936, p. 8. NPS Form 10-900-a OMB No.

POWERED PARAGLIDER LONGITUDINAL DYNAMIC MODELING AND EXPERIMENTATION By COLIN P. GIBSON Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Oklahoma State University Stillwater, OK 2014 Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE December, 2016 POWERED PARAGLIDER LONGITUDINAL DYNAMIC MODELING AND EXPERIMENTATION Thesis Approved: Dr. Andrew S. Arena Thesis Adviser Dr. Joseph P. Conner Dr. Jamey D. Jacob ii Name: COLIN P. GIBSON Date of Degree: DECEMBER, 2016 Title of Study: POWERED PARAGLIDER LONGITUDINAL DYNAMIC MODELING AND EXPERIMENTATION Major Field: MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING Abstract: Paragliders and similar controllable decelerators provide the benefits of a compact packable parachute with the improved glide performance and steering of a conventional wing, making them ideally suited for precise high offset payload recovery and airdrop missions. This advantage over uncontrollable conventional parachutes sparked interest from Oklahoma State University for implementation into its Atmospheric and Space Threshold Research Oklahoma (ASTRO) program, where payloads often descend into wooded areas. However, due to complications while building a powered paraglider to evaluate the concept, more research into its design parameters was deemed necessary. Focus shifted to an investigation of the effects of these parameters on the flight behavior of a powered system. A longitudinal dynamic model, based on Lagrange’s equation for adaptability when adding free-hanging masses, was developed to evaluate trim conditions and analyze system response. With the simulation, the effects of rigging angle, fuselage weight, center of gravity (cg), and apparent mass were calculated through step thrust input cases.

The results of this study indicate that this concept may provide a lightweight controllable paraglider for manned space vehicles.
