Although the act of riding a wave started as a religious/cultural tradition, surfing rapidly transformed into a global water sport. The popularity of surfing is the result of events, innovations, influential people (http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/9754themostinfluentialpeopleto thebirthofsurfing), and technological developments. Early surfers had to challenge the power of the oceans with heavy, finless surfboards. Today, surfing has evolved into a hightech extreme sport, in which hydrodynamics and materials play vital roles. Surfboard craftsmen have improved their techniques; wave riders have bettered their skills. The present and future of surfing can only be understood if we look back at its glorious past. From the rudimentary "caballitos de totora" to computerized shaping machines, there's an incredible trunk full of memories, culture, achievements and inventions to be rifled through. Biomechanics of extreme sports – a kite surfing scenario Lina Lundgren 1, Sofia Olandersson 1, Marita Hilliges 1, Anna-Lisa Osvalder 2 1Product Development in Healthcare, PRODEA research group, Halmstad University, Halmstad, Sweden Email: [email protected] 2 Department of Product- and Production Development, Division of Design Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden Do extreme sports contribute to higher biomechanical stress compared to other sports? Kite surfing is one of the upcoming popular extreme sports, where very few have studied the mechanical forces that act on the body. There are several factors that contribute to mechanical stress, and for preventing injuries it is of interest to investigate how these forces affect the body and how we can develop the equipment and prepare the athletes for making it as safe as possible. This project will study injury prevalence, motion analysis and mapping of forces and pressure during kite surfing. The outcome will be a better understanding of biomechanics of kite surfing and a construction for testing and training. biomechanics, kite surfing, injuries, muscle strength, motion analysis 1 Introduction Extreme sports are becoming more and more popular, and since these sports often are associated with higher risks than other sports (Slanger, Rudestam, 1997), it is also possible that the biomechanical stress is higher and contributes to more injuries. Kite surfing is a water sport where the practitioner goes on water with a board through the power of a kite 25 meters up in the air. The kite is attached to the body via a Force from harness around the waist or hip (see Fig.

The Venezuelan Sailing Federation has expressed its disagreement with the vote and decision made by Teresa Lara, their representative in the ISAF, so that kiteboarding makes it to the 2016 Olympic Games, instead of windsurfing. The official statement criticizes Lara for changing the overall position made by the Venezuelan Sailing Federation. "The Venezuelan government has invested time and money in preparing the class and as a result, our athlete Daniel Flores has classified for London 2012". After Spain and Israel, Venezuela promises to add another fire to controversial decision to drop RS:X windsurfing class from Rio de Janeiro. The official equipment supplier Neil Pryde has also stepped in to criticize the entire film. "ISAF is represented by all member countries and most come from the yacht brigade. What they have done is to safeguard their narrow interests and sacrificed windsurfing. What they don't realize is the whole sport of sailing is in danger of being kicked out of the Olympics", said the founder of the wind sports brand. "From a business perspective it doesn't impact me as I will continue to provide the sailing equipment. But from a personal point of view, I think it is a terrible decision for the sport of sailing as a whole.

Robbie Naish became the youngest world champion ever at the age of 13. He remained world champion for 25 years leading innovations in windsurfing and improving them continuously. And exactly this is what Robby Naish still does to this day, with an exemplary nonchalance. For decades he’s been delivering top performance and the best material for having fun on water and the most extreme maneuvers. Robert Staunton Naish was born on April 23rd, 1963 in California’s La Jolla. A few years later, the whole family moved to Hawaii. In 1971, the first windsurfing set came to the island. Friends of Robby bought such a surf-set. Robby practiced and practiced. He was obsessed. At the age of 13, 1976, Robby competed at the world championships on the Bahamas and won! This victory made him the youngest world champion of all times to this day. The material back then was anything close to perfect. Robby and his father Rick work on creating their own windsurfing boards; they test them, improve and build new boards.
