Bibliothèque Nationale, Series françaises SHF Société de l'H istoire de France INTRODUCTION Each incumbent queen of France functioned within the norms of the institution of queenship. Performance of duty and adherence to high standards of conduct were expected of a queen; and in return for her service, the queen enjoyed certain rights and honors. By definition, a queen was either the wife, mother, or widow of a king. Although the selection of a bride for the king or dauphin involved particular considerations, marriage was always the foundation of queenship. As the king's wife, the queen's chief duty was to bear children who resided for a while in the queen's household. The French kingdom took the responsibility to finance the queen's household needs, her wardrobe, and her retinue. However, the queen's security rested ultimately on her right to be assigned landed property to support her during widowhood. This dower was in effect an appanage granted to a newly widowed queen who assumed a lord's role until the land reverted to the crown on her death. Politically the queen's chief duties were to appear beside the king at royal functions, to greet foreign and local dignitaries, and to obey her 1 2 husband's w ill at all times. In circumstances where the king was incapable of performing his own duties, a queen mi gilt make alliances and treaties on her own or on behalf of her son, the heir. In addition, the queen was considered a natural choice to be regent for her son. Whether a queen were regent or not, she needed to be advised and attended by wise and loyal officers. The queen's court consisted of ladies, damoiselles, household officers, and servants, all of whom received either a pension or wages from the queen's finances. Although the itinerant nature of both the king's and queen's courts made it difficult for any one officer to serve both, there were always significant connections between the two households. At public functions, the queen of France was honored with an appropriate display of wealth, pageantry, and deference which was taken seriously by at least some contemporaries who felt the queen had a responsibility to maintain h i^ standards of personal and public behavior. Christine de Pisan, a fifteenth century writer of political tracts and moral advice, described the ideal queen both in her 1404 work le Livre des Fais et Bonnes Meurs du Sage Roy Charles and her 1405 study of women entitled Le Livre des Trois Vertus or I^ Trésor de la Cité des Dames. In the twentieth chapter of the first part of Christine's didactic book on Charles V, she 3 described "how the king Charles arranged the household of the queen. In speaking of the judicious order established by this wise king, I ought not to forget . what magnificence, order, and perfect unity governed the court of the very noble lady the queen Jeanne of Bourbon, his wife, in the wealth of her household, in its decent ordered way of life, . and in the administration of her revenues and servants. Her attendants, servants, clothes and everything else were properly chosen for everyday activities as well as for the annual celebrations and the visits of high ranking princes whom the king wished to honor. The queen had such majesty when she appeared crowned or dressed in rich jewels, with long flowing royal robes and cloaks made of the most precious gold and silk cloths decorated with cords, buttons stones, and pearls.     Press Contacts Patrick Milliman 212.590.0310, [email protected] Sandra Ho 212.590.0311, [email protected] THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM TO EXHIBIT NEWLY ACQUIRED PRAYER BOOK MADE FOR QUEEN CLAUDE DE FRANCE TINY BOOK—JUST 2 ¾ BY 2 INCHES—IS AN EXTREMELY RARE MASTERWORK OF RENAISSANCE ILLUMINATION Manuscript to Go on View May 20 New York, NY, May 9, 2008—The Morgan Library & Museum will put on special exhibition beginning May 20 an extremely rare Renaissance illuminated manuscript, the Prayer Book of Queen Claude de France (1499–1524), created around the time of her coronation in 1517. It is the most important single illuminated manuscript acquired by the Morgan in the last twenty-five years and will go on view in the East Room of the historic McKim building. The tiny, jewel-like book, measuring just 2 ¾ by 2 inches, is richly illustrated with 132 scenes from the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and numerous saints. The work was created by an artist known as the Master of Claude de France and can be characterized as the pinnacle of delicacy in Renaissance illumination. The artist, named after this prayer book and a companion manuscript, was active in Tours during the first quarter of the sixteenth century. Barely a dozen of his works survive. The prayer book was given to the Morgan by Mrs. Alexandre P. Rosenberg, a long time generous supporter of the Museum. The gift is in memory of her husband Alexandre Paul Rosenberg, who died in Virgin and Child with St. John the Baptist, with the coat of arms of Queen Claude de France in the lower border, illuminated 1987.

    THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM MASTERWORKS FROM THE MORGAN: MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MANUSCRIPTS Although Pierpont Morgan acquired medieval and Renaissance manuscripts only during the last dozen years of his life, his collection of some six hundred manuscripts was world renowned. His son, J. P. Morgan, Jr., added two hundred more that matched those of his father in terms of quality and importance. The collection currently numbers nearly fourteen hundred books and leaves. Written by hand and often sumptuously painted or illuminated with gold leaf, these manuscripts reflect the religious, intellectual, and artistic life of their time. Often commissioned by leaders of church and state, they were frequently made of rare and precious materials, requiring the combined skills of parchment makers, scribes, editors, illuminators, and binders. Protected by their bindings, the vivid colors of their miniatures have changed little, making them the best preserved of all medieval and Renaissance paintings. The icons of illumination shown here were selected because each, in some way, is the best of its kind and part of the core of masterworks upon which the Morgan’s international reputation is based. Nativity, in an initial P, leaf from a Gradual (I), in Latin. Italy, Florence, 1392–99, illuminated at Santa Maria degli Angeli by Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci for Paolo Venier, abbot of San Michele à Murano. This large historiated initial and four others in the Morgan come from the same two-volume Gradual, a choir book containing the sung portions of the Mass. The initial P begins the Introit for the Christmas Mass, taken from Isaiah (9:6): Puer natus est nobis (A child is born to us).

For many years this treatise was famous for both the quality of its hunting lessons and its extraordinary illuminations: a masterpiece of early-fi fteenth- century manuscript production in Paris, and one of the very few educational books to be illustrated as lavishly as a Bible. Besides the lessons it contains, this treatise also presents hunting as a redeeming exercise enabling hunters to go straight to Heaven by endowing them with an upright body and mind. The composition itself of this deeply pondered book links the hunter to the spiritual world. The different artists who worked on this manuscript – skilful mas- ters of medieval canons of illustration such as line dynamics, repeated fi gures, effects of colours, etc – placed their art at the service of Gaston Phoebus’s desire to teach, thereby setting out not merely a lesson of hunting but a lesson of life.     Spotlight on Tours Medieval Books of Hours from Tours at Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books Basel – Stalden, Switzerland Spotlight on Tours Whereas Paris has so long been France’s ‘capital of the arts’ – around 1500 it had to share this title with Tours on the Loire, favoured by royalty and their entourage. Many of them were avid patrons of the arts and books. Since the second half of the 15th century to the early 16th century, the city of Tours was a renowned centre of manuscript illumination. Four French kings – Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francis I – were served here by the best illuminators. Jean Bourdichon (c. 1457-1521) had been the pupil of Jean Fouquet (c. 1420-1481) in Tours, where both men painted several masterpieces. They inspired the Master of Petrarch’s Triumphs (c. 1490-1510), Jean Poyer (c. 1465–1503), the Master of Claude de France (1498-c.1520) and their circles. But it began even earlier…. THE ‘DE NULLY DE GROSSEVRE’ HOURS ILLUMINATED IN THE CIRCLE OF THE JOUVENEL MASTER AND THE MASTER OF BOETHIUS FRANÇAIS 809. France, Tours (?), c. 1450-1460. Manuscript on vellum, 213 x 148 mm, 183 leaves with 17 large miniatures with full borders, three-sided vine- leaf borders on each page. The provenance is uncertain but some saints (Gatian, Lidorius) in the Litany point to Tours as city of origin. The fine Annunciation is attributed to the Boethius Master. He was also influenced by Jean Fouquet. The ‘De Nully de Grossevre’ Hours illuminated in the circle of the Jouvenel Master and the Master of Boethius Français 809.

V Praze, dne 8. 3. 2016 PhDr. Kateřina Průšová 3 Abstrakt Účelem této disertace je představit první souborný uměleckohistorický katalog frankoflámských knih hodinek ze sbírek Národní knihovny v Praze (NK). Některé rukopisy byly již časopisecky publikovány, jiné dosud publikovány nebyly. Jádrem katalogu je formální a stylová analýza knih hodinek, atribuce jednotlivým mistrům a dílnám, lokalizace a datace založená na srovnání se stylově příbuznými rukopisy. Katalog je pokračováním mé předešlé badatelské práce zaměřené na pařížské knihy hodinek (NK Břevnov 297, NK Osek 70 and NK XXIII G 89, magisterská a rigorózní práce). Šest knih hodinek je uloženo ve sbírkách Národní knihovny (NK XXIII H 22, NK Břevnov 296, NK XXIII F 198, NK XXIII G88, NK Osek 65, NK VI D 25) a jeden rukopis ve sbírce Lobkowiczů na Nelahozevsi, dříve deponován v pražské Národní knihovně (pod sign. VI Fg 67). Katalog pokrývá období největšího rozkvětu flámské iluminace od první poloviny 15. století do počátku 16. století. Knihy hodinek z pražského Klementina pochází převážně ze šlechtických sbírek (Lobkowiczové, Rohanové) pokud je možné sledovat jejich původ. Majitelé knih hodinek v 15. století byli zástupci širokých společenských kruhů, od bohatých obchodníků a měšťanů po členy vysoce postavených šlechtických a královských rodin.

Baker 2013 Abstract Traditionally read as a deeply nostalgic text – one that looks back to Arthur’s Camelot as a Golden Age of English history and chivalry – Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur is, instead, a very contemporarily relevant text. Completed in 1469/70, at the mathematical center of the divisive Wars of the Roses (c. 1455-1485), Malory’s Morte considers problematic contemporary political issues that threaten the peace and stability of the realm. Chief among these are issues involving over-mighty subjects, identified by Sir John Fortescue in The Governance of England (c. 1471/75) as the greatest threat to fifteenth-century kings. Since K. B. McFarlane’s 1964 declaration that “only an undermighty ruler had anything to fear from overmighty subjects,” however, the over- mighty have been under-studied. It is important, though, when examining a text to consider the prevalent beliefs of its time; even if McFarlane’s statement is true, neither Fortescue nor Malory would have agreed with it. Malory’s Morte does not create perfect analogues to fifteenth-century persons or events (i.e., Lancelot is not the Kingmaker, the final battle near Salisbury is not Towton), but it does create many parallels to fifteenth-century political issues.
