History of Red Bluff Although never a mining camp, Red Bluff ranks with the celebrated towns of the gold rush days in age, exciting history, colorful personalities and in present day importance. The story of Red Bluff began eight years before the community formed. Red Bluff was influenced by the famous Peter Lassen, whose name today is known as a county, national park, volcano and highway. Red Bluff became the marketing and distribution center for a large area and its scope in that role widened steadily. By 1853 it was the chief commercial city in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley, and its streets continually thronged with pack trains operating to and from points as far away as Oregon, and Idaho. In 1843, Lassen and two fellow pioneers were in Red Bluff tracking down horse thieves. He was so impressed by the land that he sought and received from the Mexican government a grant of 25,000 acres, a few miles south of where the city now stands. On that tract in early 1847, he laid out a town site and named it Benton City in honor of Senator Thomas H. Benton of Missouri. Then he journeyed to Missouri to induce settlers to come out and also to obtain a charter for a Masonic Lodge which he wished to establish in his settlement. Lassen returned to his town site in the summer of 1849 with a party of settlers and with the Masonic Charter. On reaching California, the members of the party learned about the discovery of gold, gave up their original idea, and headed to the mining area. So the town site died suddenly and as a result, the lodge charter was transferred to Shasta. However, the publicity given to Lassen’s colonization plan attracted many others to the territory, including several who helped found and build Red Bluff. Red Bluff achieved and retained commercial importance because, for more than a century, it was the head of navigation on the Sacramento River. The initial attempt at river shipping in the area was made by Lassen in 1849, but the last trip was a losing venture and he abandoned the plan. The following year steamers commenced regular and frequent trips between and Red Bluff and soon arrivals and departures were almost a daily occurrence. The service continued until after the turn Photo by Tony Maxey of the century.

2018 MEMBER DIRECTORY and VISITOR GUIDE 29 VISIT Historic Downtown Red Bluff By Linda Friedel

ed Bluff ArtWalk, the Downtown Christmas parade, farmers market and Beef ‘N Brew are some of the many reasons to visit Historic Downtown Red Bluff, as well as its eclectic shops R and restaurant establishments. “The downtown should be the heart of the community where people want to go and spend their time, said Thomas Bobadilla, president of the Downtown Red Bluff Business Association (DRBBA). Bobadilla has always appreciated downtown’s charm with its unique buildings and Victorian homes surrounding the district, earning it the nickname “Victorian City on the River. It’s where Bobadilla and his brother, Francisco, co-own Firehouse Pizza and Downtown Ale House, a pub with craft beers and wine, and live music. As a business owner and leader in the DRBBA, Bobadilla says he is fully invested in downtown. “Downtown is awesome, he said. “We are ingrained in the community. Let’s make where we are better. Bobadilla is excited about the growth he sees among the downtown restaurants, in addition to other shops and services. Meme’s, a new confection shop, opened its sweet-smelling establishment on Main Street this spring. Another new eatery, Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, located at 860 Main St., is slated to open for business. And look for new touches in the Palomino Room restaurant, which is currently undergoing revitalization and rebranding. The historic State Theatre for the Arts is also busy with renovations. “Downtown is looking good, Bobadilla said. “It’s slowly revitalizing. The DRBBA, with more than 120 members, has helped to preserve and revitalize the downtown district through the years with projects that have beautified and enhanced downtown’s shopping and dining experience. New street signage and banners stand out among recent improvements.

Historic Downtown Red Bluff Caltrans plans to resurface Main Street in 2020 and at that time DRBBA hopes to address the planters along Main Street, as well as waterlines, if possible, Bobadilla said. “They are going to grind off a layer and resurface it, he said. DRBBA’s activities over the past two decades include installation of antique lighting on Rio and Walnut Streets, replanting Red Bluff’s living Christmas tree, co-sponsorship of the city’s Beef ‘N Brew and ArtWalk, hosting various downtown Christmas events to promote shopping local, supporters of the Wednesday Night Farmer’s Market and a partnership with the Tehama County Branding Project. Special events are a great way to draw the community downtown, said Lisa Hansen, chair of the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce. “I love the downtown businesses, Hansen said. “We have some great shopping opportunities. There are nice neighborhood gems downtown. It’s family friendly. It’s a great way to support your local economy without going out of town. PhotoPhoto by by R obertTony M Birdaxey
