Surveys of Special Collections by Format A. Background to the Collections A1. Introduction. The Library was founded in 1973 (British Library Act 1972). A number of existing collections were transferred into its care at that time, the most extensive of which were those of the British Museum’s Department of Printed Books (including the National Reference Library of Science and Invention), Department of Mss, and Department Oriental Mss and Printed Books. Other collections of rare and special materials have been added subsequently, most notably the India Office Library & Records in 1982. The Library today holds over 150 million collection items, including books, pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, printed music, maps, mss, archival records, sound recordings, postage stamps, electronic titles, and archived websites; this figure includes an estimated 4.1 million books, pamphlets and periodical titles printed in the West from the 15th cent to the 19th cent. The breadth of collecting in terms of subjects, dates, languages, and geographical provenance has always been a feature of collection building policies. A wide range of heritage materials continues to be acquired from Britain and overseas through purchase and donation. The Library’s early printed materials feature prominently in a range of digital facsimile products, e.g. Early English Books Online, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Early Music Online, Nineteenth Century Collections Online, and Google Books. Direct links to facsimiles are increasingly provided from the Library’s website, particularly from the main catalogues. -

PRESS RELEASE Pre-Raphaelites on Paper: Victorian Drawings from the Lanigan Collection An exhibition at Leighton House Museum organised by the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa 12 Feb 2016 – 29 May 2016 Press Preview 11 Feb 2016 Pre-Raphaelites on Paper: Victorian Drawings from the Lanigan Collection will be the first exhibition opening at Leighton House Museum in 2016, presenting an exceptional, privately- assembled collection to the UK public for the first time. Featuring over 100 drawings and sketches by the Pre- Raphaelites and their contemporaries, the exhibition is organised by the National Gallery of Canada (NGC). It expresses the richness and flair of British draftsmanship during the Victorian era displayed in the unique setting of the opulent home and studio of artist and President of the Royal Academy (PRA) Frederic, Lord Leighton. From preparatory sketches to highly finished drawings intended as works of art in themselves, visitors will discover the diverse ways that Victorian artists used drawing to further their artistic practice, creating, as they did so, images of great beauty and accomplishment. Portraits, landscapes, allegories and scenes from religious and literary works are all represented in the exhibition including studies for some of the most well-known paintings of the era such as Edward Burne- Jones’ The Wheel of Fortune (1883), Holman Hunt’s Eve of St Agnes (1848) and Leighton’s Cymon and Iphigenia (1884). With the exception of Leighton’s painting studio, the permanent collection will be cleared from Leighton House and the drawings hung throughout the historic interiors. 4 Verleger als Vermittler von Lesekultur Ausgangspunkt für den zweiten Teil der vorliegenden Studie sind die rekonstru- ierten Lesebiographien der Verleger. Wie Frank Swinnerton betonte, erforderte die Verlegertätigkeit ein gewisses Maß an literacy. Die Verleger der Fallstudien haben sich in ihren Autobiographien als kompetente Leser dargestellt, die über unterschiedliche Leseerfahrungen verfügten. Sie haben prägende Leseerlebnisse und Ansprüche präsentiert, die im Zusammenhang mit ihrer beruflichen Ent- wicklung standen. Im Folgenden wird der Entwicklung der Verleger Rechnung getragen und ihr Einfluss auf die Herausbildung eines distinkten Verlagspro- grammes resultierend aus der persönlichen Einstellung zu Buch und Lesen, auch unter Berücksichtigung der eigenen Autorentätigkeit, herausgearbeitet. 4.1 Die Chambers-Brüder: „Publishers for the People“ Zentrale Aspekte der Lesesozialisation von William und Robert Chambers lassen sich auch in ihrem beruflichen Werdegang nachvollziehen.Self-reliance und self- improvement sowie der gesellschaftlich begründete Anspruch, über Kultur und Bildung den Anschluss an die Mittelschicht halten zu können, fanden ebenso Ausdruck in ihrem Selbstverständnis wie ihr pragmatisches Nützlichkeitsprinzip und spiegelten sich in der eigenen Autorentätigkeit und im Verlagsprofil wider. Auch wenn die Brüder in einer gemeinsamen Fallstudie betrachtet werden, so ist es dennoch sinnvoll, die Berufswahl von William und Robert Chambers zunächst getrennt darzustellen. 4.1.1 Die Berufsfindung der Chambers-Brüder 4.1.1.1 William Chambers: „What would I be?“ Die berufliche Entwicklung der Brüder war eng mit der wirtschaftlichen Situa- tion der Familie verknüpft. Mit dem Verlust der Weberei 1812, den wechselnden Anstellungen des Vaters und schließlich dessen Arbeitsunfähigkeit 1816 wurde es notwendig den ältesten Sohn William in eine Ausbildung zu schicken, die ihm ein finanzielles Auskommen bot und auch zum Familieneinkommen beitrug. -

THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM MASTERWORKS FROM THE MORGAN: DRAWINGS In quality and scope, the Morgan’s collection of drawings and watercolors ranks among the very finest in America. It encompasses great works by major artists of Western Europe and the United States, such as Leonardo, Dürer, Rembrandt, Watteau, Blake, Goya, Cézanne, Picasso, and Pollock, and ranges in date from the late-fourteenth to the late-twentieth century. There are representative examples of nearly all categories of drawing—model books, devotional images, studies for engravings, portraits, genre scenes, and quick and free sketches—in a wide variety of techniques that include metalpoint and pen and ink, often used in conjunction with wash, colored chalk, and watercolor. The current selection has been made on the basis of outstanding quality and art historical significance. It also highlights individual artists who are particularly well represented in the collection. This exhibition simultaneously chronicles the history and growth of the Morgan’s holdings, containing works from the initial group of drawings purchased by Pierpont Morgan from Charles Fairfax Murray in 1909, and representing notable acquisitions and gifts since the institution’s founding in 1924. School of Raphael (1483–1520) Italian Holy Family, ca. 1520 Oil on canvas This is a contemporary copy of Raphael’s popular painting of the subject, which, according to Vasari, hung in Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome. The newly awakened Christ Child gazes at the Virgin and plays with her transparent veil, which is also symbolic of the shroud and alludes to his eventual death. Raphael’s canvas has long been considered lost, although many scholars now accept the version in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, as original. -
