Achievements and Performance As we live through these strange and uncertain times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we've had to adapt many of our services to be deliverable in a virtual format over the web. In spite of widespread predictions of lockdown having a drastic impact on everyone's emotional wellbeing, calls to our Helpline and use of our new EwenMe telephone friend service have not yet reflected that impact to any great extent, however that is likely to change, as coming out of lockdown, with the realisation of its financial and societal impacts, may well have a far greater impact than its imposition.

Helpline - efforts have continued to raise the profile of the Helpline Service and recruit and train the volunteers who selflessly give their time to take the calls and texts. The last Festive Season saw a significant increase in call volume but this has tailed off to unusually low levels since the start of lockdown in March. The Agnes Hunter Trust funding to support the service ran out at the end of December 2019 but we have been successful in securing £7,950 from the Corra Foundation to help cover ongoing operating costs until June 2021.

Community Workshops - Over February & March, a REWARD course was presented in . The first 3 sessions went well, but the 4th had to be cancelled due to lockdown. Further weekly sessions, planned for Fort William in April, were delivered successfully by Zoom VC, the first of an ongoing series of free virtual workshops on topics relating to mental health and wellbeing, targeted at local communities, but effectively open to all via the web.

Education - In May 2019, mental health and awareness and transition sessions were delivered to staff at High School to equip them to deliver lessons themselves as part of their PSE curriculum. The Autum mental health awareness PSE session were also provided, followed by stress busting techniques for senior AHS pupils in early 2020. The spring term PSE input had to be shelved, as Coronavirus restrictions were introduced. These will now be delivered, along with staff training at Mallaig, after the schools go back in August.

Ewen's Room International - As part of her annual trip to Grenada (Caribbean) in January, Justine again delivered mental health awareness sessions and other projects under the aegis of ER. She hosted mental health workshops for Police, Primary school teachers and 7th Day Adventist ministers; recruited a Mental Health Ambassador to take the project forward and began planning a Mental Health Awareness Programme for the island. Her charges to the Authorities for this work fully covered the cost of the trip.

Page 3 of 10 Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) - This year, Ewen's Room was selected as their charity to champion by teams from three high schools in Lochaber: Ardnamurchan, Mallaig and . Unfortunately, our local AHS team was unsuccessful in their bid for us, and the finals for both of the others had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. However, as part of their effort for the competition, the Mallaig team kindly hosted a coffee morning which raised £162 for our funds.

Young Persons (YP) Counsellor Project - Our (YP) Counselling Service, which started in Ardnamurchan High School in March 2019, was extended to cover Mallaig High School also from August. Both schools had been visited and benefit from a weekly brief intervention service to clients who have self-referred, or been referred by staff or parents. Over the last year some 20 YPs have benefitted from counselling over about 90 appointments, with 7 referred on to CAMHS.

Since the start of the COVID-19 lockdown in March, we have been offering a version of the counselling service designed for online delivery to these schools, and thanks to COVID-19 emergency funding, we have also been able to offer support to pupils of the other High Schools in the area: Lochaber HS, Kinlochleven HS and Kilchuimen Academy ().

Open Doors - Both Acharacle and Strontian sessions have continued to run well over the year and we are grateful to our volunteers for all their efforts in keeping the wheels turning. ON 7th November, the Strontian group organised a 'Think Pink' event, with all the donations going to Breast Cancer Now.

Also in November, we decided to take the plunge and set up a new weekly meeting in Fort William Library on a Thursday afternoon. Attendance has been variable, but the sessions there had undoubtedly provided support to a small core of people who were seeking help, continued by phone contact since lockdown.

In early 2020, we were approached by members of the community who were keen to start up an ER Open Doors in the village. Following an exploratory meeting this got going on 1st March, only to be stopped by lockdown along with all the other sessions, which we cancelled formally on 16th March. Since then, the Acharacle and Strontian groups have continued meeting successfully by Zoom VC.

Tackling Suicide - One Day Conference, 12th November 2019 - Following an exploratory meeting with Dr Amy Chandler of Edinburgh University in May, we agreed to collaborate in the hosting of a one-day meeting to showcase her Suicide Cultures research project and to encourage collaboration between the public services and third sector organisations to act on tackling the high rate of suicide in Lochaber. Presentations on the day included contributions from the national Suicide Prevention Leadership Group, , Local GP Lead and the Lochaber Community Mental Health Team with 55 delegates in attendance. Following on from the meeting, we have been in discussion with NHS Adult Services area manager about possible joint actions on suicide prevention, but progress has been stalled by COVID-19. Efforts will resume as restrictions are lifted.

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees on the unaudited accounts of Ewen's Room.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year to 31st March 2020 which are set out on pages 7 to 10.

Respective responsibilities of trustee and independent examiner

The charity's Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1 which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

* to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and * to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met, or

2 to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
