CAREER EXPLORATION EVENTS SCHEDULED ACROSS

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF CENTRAL TEXAS IS BRINGING TOGETHER 21 LOCAL BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS FOR GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOW DAY

Austin, TX --- On Friday, January 31, Communities In Schools of Central Texas will celebrate Groundhog Day with job shadowing events at 21 locations around Austin. More than 300 Communities In Schools students will participate.

About Communities In Schools Groundhog Job Shadow Day: • The program started in collaboration with Junior Achievement seven years ago • Students learn about career opportunities through observation and hands-on activities • At each site, adults engage with students as they share how they achieved their career goals • More than 300 students and 21 local businesses and organizations will be participating this year

“We want students to learn about careers that are out there in the larger community so that they will dream big, work hard and be successful,” said Suki Steinhauser, CEO of Communities In Schools of Central Texas. “Job shadowing exposes students to new occupations and motivates them to gain the education necessary to accomplish their career goals.”

Events are happening on Friday, January 31, 2014 between 9 a.m. and noon at the following locations:

Austin Fire Department Legal McGarrah Jessee Univision Alamo Drafthouse Dub Academy Samsung Whole Foods Blanton Museum of Art Fox 7 News Texas Capitol Wyatt Brand Blue Baker Hyatt Regency Travis County District Court Dell Children’s Hospital KXAN Seton Medical Centers (multiple sites)

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. In the 2012-2013 school year, we served 45,155 individuals in 56 schools across 6 districts with services ranging from mental health counseling to crisis intervention, basic needs assistance, mentoring, and academic intervention. 5,877 students received intensive case management. Of the children we serve, 99% stay in school and 87% improve their grades, attendance, or behavior.
