36 SALTFORD BUSINESS NETWORK - share-support-enjoy The Saltford Business Network promotes and supports businesses in and around Saltford. We offer access to local and regional information and organisations and the chance to share ideas and issues with local col- leagues. We seek to ensure that the views of Saltford businesses are represented when plans are made and decisions taken. In April we were delighted to see that our Chair, Kevin Reeves, received a Saltford Achievement Award from the Parish Council. Kevin has given service to Saltford in a number of roles: He shared in the management of the then newly formed Saltford Stars Junior Football Club and continued to actively help the club for a number of years. He was a Saltford Parish Councillor from 2011 to 2015, helping to modernise and refresh the Parish Council’s ways of working. Kevin played a large part in establishing this independent Saltford Business Network and continues to serve as Chair of the Network and it’s Executive. Our membership is really diverse and newcomers find a friendly welcome. All you need is to be a business person residing, or actively engaged in business in or around Saltford. We’ll include your business in our on-line directory. You are bound to have something to offer. Saltford Business Network continues to maintain links with business organisations and academic institutions in the region, so keeping our members informed of local and regional news and issues. We enjoyed a business focussed guided walk in Bath in May and plan a workshop on setting up a “not-for-profit” business in difficult times led by our own Post Office and Library Hub. As the year goes on our programme will continue to bring our usual blend of informal social networking gather- ings and informative seminars and events. Check our web-site for details of members and future events. You will also find our Business Direc- tory. All the Councillors have declared their acceptance of office, and their contact details can now be found on the SPC website and noticeboard. The newly elected Saltford Parish Council officially came into office on 7th May, and the first meeting of the new council is on Friday 17th May at Saltford Hall, starting at 7:15pm. Members of the public are welcome to our meetings.

The new B&NES Council Saltford Ward Councillors are Cllr Duncan Hounsell (also a Saltford Parish Councillor) and Cllr Alistair Singleton. Contact details for your new B&NES Saltford Ward Councillors are available on both the B&NES Council and SPC websites.

SPC’s Annual ‘Parish Walk’ – 7pm Tuesday 11th June

SPC’s FREE event at the festival, ‘The Parish Walk’ will take place on the evening of Tuesday 11th June – everyone is welcome (including well behaved dogs!) Once again this walk will be led by two knowledgeable walking guides - Robin Dixon and Cheryl Hannan.

We will depart and return to The Shallows via Kelston Village and Kelston Mills. During the walk the group will split into two, with the shorter walk remaining on reasonably level ground. The second group, for those would like a more challenging walk, will continue up to Kelston Round Hill.

The Parish Walk will set off from The Shallows Car Park at 7pm, and we hope that many residents will be able to join us. Photograph taken by Cllr Phil Harding in May 2019.

Saltford Festival 2019 awarded £1000 by SPC

Saltford Parish Council agreed to grant Saltford Community Association £1000 to support the costs of the Saltford Festival 2019. This funding application was agreed at SPC’s March meeting. The primary purpose of the festival is to bring the village together through a wide range of events.

Saltford, Corston and Newton St Loe Living the story. Telling the story. Contact us: [email protected] Tel:01225-872275

One of Louis Armstrong’s classic hits tells the story of creation, the creation of a wonderful world, from green trees to red roses, blue skies to the dark sacred night and white clouds to all the colours of the rainbow. Its refrain is probably the most rememberable: Yes, I say to myself, what a wonderful world! I don’t know much about Louis Armstrong , I don’t know if he was a man of faith, a man who believed in God, or even a man who believed that God created the world in which we live. This song, however, does echo the words of one of David’s songs found in the Bible, which says; Lord, our Lord how majestic is your name in all the earth. The heavens (or all of creation) declare the greatness of the Lord.

Over the next couple of months there are three special services being held in our three parishes which in different ways are a celebration of God’s wonderful world. We would like to invite you to come along to any or all them.

Songs of Praise – a Celebration of God’s Gifts to us in our Gardens The first is Songs of Praise on Sunday 9th June 2019 at 9.30am in St Mary’s Church Saltford. It follows on from the Saltford Festival Open Gardens which takes place on the Saturday afternoon and is a celebration of one of our favourite past times, gardening.

All Creatures Great and Small – Pet Service On Sunday July 7th 2019 at 4pm in St Mary’s Church Saltford there will be an opportunity for you to bring all your pets great and small to a service that celebrates the creation of animals. At pet services we often have lots of dogs, but how about seeing if we can have a horse, a snake, a guinea pig or stick insect!

Friends shaking hands across the three parishes … As well as the wonderful created world, Louis also refers to the wonders of humanity, through hearing babies cry, watching children grow and people demonstrating their love for one another through the shaking of hands. On Sunday 30th June 2019 at 6pm in All Saints Corston there will be an evening service celebrating friendship, community and working together across the three parishes. The service will be led my our newly formed Three Parishes Choir and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

… and the Deanery! Working together is not limited to parishes. Our three churches are part of the Chew Magna Deanery of churches and on Sunday July 14th between 1pm and 5pm there is a special event for all the churches in the deanery. It takes place at Saltford Hall and there will be food, followed by a family magic show from Rev Andy Gray: which promises laughter, comedy, lots of interaction with the children and adults alike. There will also be opportunities for discussion, a prayer labyrinth, ice cream and time to enjoying meeting new and old friends. At the end of the afternoon, starting at 4pm, there will be an act of worship that will finish at 5pm, to conclude our Deanery Celebration. In each of the churches there is a signup sheet to indicate if you are coming, please sign up and if you can’t make the whole afternoon, you are very welcome to come along for the service at 4pm.

Walking in the footsteps of Jesus At the end of October in 2020, a group of people from across the three churches will be setting off on an 8 day pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The trip is open to anyone, even if you do not attend our three churches. So far, we have 22 people who have paid their deposit, which leaves a maximum of 18 spaces remaining – if you would like to reserve a place or for more information please get in touch.

Contemplative Prayer and Christian Meditation Group The group is for anyone who would like to explore Contemplative prayer and Christian meditation in a deeper way. No experience is necessary and equally anyone who has meditated before would be welcome. This is an ideal way of learning how to relax while at the same time finding a deeper connection to God. This can be for anyone in the church or the wider community who would like to embark on either deepening their relationship with God or people who don’t particularly want to go to church but are looking for ways to deepen their spirituality.

In contemplative prayer we seek to become the person we are called to be, not by thinking of God, but by being with God. Simply to be with God is to be drawn into being the person God calls us to be. (John Main)

We meet every Monday except Bank Holidays, at 7.30pm in St Marys Church Saltford For more information please contact Amanda on 07896494440 or [email protected]
