ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. • Downtrodden Yet Determined: Exploring the History Of
DOWNTRODDEN YET DETERMINED: EXPLORING THE HISTORY OF BLACK MALES IN PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL AND HOW THE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION ADDRESSES THEIR WELFARE A Dissertation by JUSTIN RYAN GARNER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, John N. Singer Committee Members, Natasha Brison Paul J. Batista Tommy J. Curry Head of Department, Melinda Sheffield-Moore May 2019 Major Subject: Kinesiology Copyright 2019 Justin R. Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association.

  • Műkorcsolya Világversenyek Magyarországon
MŰKORCSOLYA VILÁGVERSENYEK MAGYARORSZÁGON Ez idáig tizenötször rendeztek Magyarországon műkorcsolya világversenyt. - 5 alkalommal világbajnokságot, - 7 alkalommal Európa-bajnokságot és - 3 alkalommal Junior világbajnokságot Nézzük, hogyan is kezdődött. 1895. január 27. FÉRFI EB Az első kontinensbajnokságot a Budapesti Korcsolyázó Egylet megalakulásának 25. évfordulója alkalmából nagyszabású jubileumi ünnepségek keretében rendezték meg 1895. január 27-én a Városligetben, akkor még csak a férfiak részére. Mind a délelőtti iskolagyakorlatokban, mind a délutáni, öt percig tartó, szabad választás szerinti korcsolyázásban Földváry Tibor lett valamennyi bírónál a győztes, ezzel megszerezte a magyar sport első Európa-bajnoki címét. Második a későbbi háromszoros világbajnok osztrák Gustav Hügel lett.

PRESS RELEASE Applauses, encores and a standing ovation for Opera on Ice Lots of celebrities and authorities at the show Verona, 26th September 2012. Opera on Ice worked its magic again this year, and on Saturday night the Verona Arena was a full house. The 12,000 spectators enjoyed the skating show of the great champions that enthralled the public with as many as 3 encores. The many people who had been queuing up at the entrances since early in the afternoon, something that had not happened since the good old times of the opera at the Arena, show that Opera on Ice has fully achieved its goal of bringing young people closer to opera through skating. The night’s show, which will be aired on Canale 5 at Christmas with Alfonso Signorini and Costanza Calabrese as Masters of Ceremonies, showcased the world’s best skaters along with new opera talents accompanied by the over 200 singers and musicians of the Verona Arena’s Choir and Orchestra, with Fabio Mastrangelo as conductor. The 2012 show included the most famous arias, some of which are part of the Arena’s 2013 programme, such as Aida, Nabucco, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Rigoletto and Roméo et Juliette. There were lots of celebrities and authorities at the show, such as: Alessandro Benetton and Deborah Com- pagnoni with their 3 children, Alexandra of Hannover, who’s been a fan of Kostner since she met her with her mother Caroline, Princess of Monaco, at Nice world championship, Marina Berlusconi with her husband and children, Sandra Galan, wife of former Governor of the Region Veneto, Giancarlo Galan, with her little daughter, the President of ISU and member of IOC Ottavio Cinquanta, the Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to Italy Ding Wei, who would like to bring the Opera on Ice show to Bejing and Shanghai as well, and Cesare Baldrighi, President of Consorzio Grana Padano.
