Kyle Martin’s two-run single in the first inning gave Winnipeg a 2-0 lead. The Canaries tied the game in the top of the second on a Brett Vertigan safety squeeze bunt and an Alay Lago infield single. The Canaries went in front 3-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Kevin Taylor. Following a one-hour and 20-minute rain delay, the Goldeyes re-gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Hill and Wes Darvill hit back-to-back, two-out singles. The Canaries answered against with three runs in the top of the fifth, and extended their lead to 8-6 in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run home run from Andrew Ely. Dominic Ficociello hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, and the Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth before am Bragg recorded the final out to earn the save. Kevin McGovern started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. McGovern walked three and struck out five. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE T-BONES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 80-59 all-time against the Kansas City T-Bones, including a 37-31 record at T-Bones Stadium. The T-Bones joined the American Association along with the Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, and Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2011. Prior to that, the T-Bones were members of the Northern League from 2003-2010. The T-Bones’ lineage dates all the way back to the birth of modern independent baseball. The club operated as the Duluth-Superior Dukes (Duluth, Minnesota) from 1993-2002. The Goldeyes’ inaugural game was played against the Dukes, a 9-1 victory on June 7th, 1994 at Winnipeg Stadium. The T-Bones won the 2018 American Association championship, beating the Sioux City Explorers in five games in the South Division Series, and the St. Paul Saints in four games in the Championship Series. It was Kansas City’s first playoff appearance since their final year in the Northern League in 2010. The T-Bones won the Northern League championship in 2008. Joe Calfapietra returns for a third season as manager. Prior to his arrival in Kansas City, Calfapietra led the Can-Am League’s New Jersey Jackals for 14 years, including 10 trips to the playoffs. Calfapietra also managed the RailCats during their inaugural season in 2002. The RailCats played exclusively on the road that season, and Calfapietra was voted Northern League Manager of the Year. Former Kansas City Royals’ legend Frank White returns as first base coach. White was an integral member of the Royals’ 1985 World Series championship team, and won eight gold gloves at second base during his 18-year career in the Major Leagues. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 31-26, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 6.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead-RedHawks. The Goldeyes just won two of three from the Sioux Falls Canaries at home. The Goldeyes are eighth in the American Association in hitting (.265), ninth in pitching (4.68), and first in fielding (.990). The Kansas City T-Bones are 29-27, in second place in the South Division, and 3.5 games behind the Cleburne Railroaders. The T-Bones just lost two of three to the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field. The T-Bones are sixth in the league in batting (.275), 10th in pitching (4.80), and tied for fifth in defence (.979). This is the last of two head-to-head meetings this season between Winnipeg and Kansas City. The Goldeyes took two of three from the T-Bones at Shaw Park in late-May. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with right- 7/20 at KC: TBA vs. RHP Kenny Koplove (2-2, 4.94) hander Joel Seddon who is 2-3 with a 7.34 ERA in six 7/21 at KC: LHP Mitchell Lambson (6-2, 2.93) vs. RHP Jon Perrin (2-0, 3.77) starts this season. Seddon took the loss at St. Paul on ***American Association All-Star Break*** Sunday, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits in 4.0 innings. Seddon walked one and struck out two. Seddon has walked two batters or less in five of his six starts, and has walked three batters or less in all of them. Earlier this season, Seddon made three starts and seven relief appearances at three levels of the Oakland Athletics’ organization, which included a stint at Triple-A Las Vegas. Seddon was 9-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 17 starts and 11 relief appearances last year for the Double-A Texas League’s Midland RockHounds. Seddon finished eighth in the Texas League in ERA and was voted a Texas League All-Star. Seddon helped the RockHounds win back-to-back Texas League championships in 2016 and 2017. Seddon was a combined 4-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 19.0 postseason innings. Seddon was drafted by the Athletics in the 11th round in 2014 out of the University of South Carolina (Columbia, South Carolina). Seddon saved 14 games for the Gamecocks during his junior season in 2014 where he was voted All-Southeastern Conference (SEC). Seddon is in his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 34-35 lifetime with three saves and a 4.74 ERA in 159 games, 73 of them as a starting pitcher. Tonight will be Seddon’s first career appearance against Kansas City, as well as his first career appearance at T-Bones Stadium. The T-Bones go with right-hander Jose Mesa Jr. who is 0-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three relief appearances since signing on July 4th. Mesa pitched 0.2 scoreless relief innings last Saturday vs. Texas. Earlier this season, Mesa made seven appearances for the Double-A Eastern League’s Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees). Mesa is the son of former longtime Major League closer Jose Mesa who saved 321 games during 19 years in the Majors. Mesa was drafted by the Yankees in the 24th round in 2012 out of Charles Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Mesa has reached the Double-A level three times in his career, and appeared in Major League spring training games for the Yankees in 2018. Mesa is in his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 14-5 lifetime with five saves and a 3.27 ERA in 97 games, 10 of them as a starting pitcher. Mesa has averaged 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional. Tonight will be Mesa’s first career appearance against Winnipeg. Mesa is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two career relief appearances at T-Bones Stadium. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 14th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 23rd overall within the organization. During his first 13 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .545 overall winning percentage (698-583), 10 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .553 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-18) is the third-highest in league history (there have been 51 total American Association managers through the 2018 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. ROSTER MOVE: The Winnipeg Goldeyes released left-handed pitcher Ryan Johnson on Monday. Johnson was 1-4 with a 5.00 ERA in nine starts. THREE GOLDEYES HEADED TO ALL-STAR GAME: Goldeyes’ infielder Wes Darvill, left-handed pitcher Mitchell Lambson, and right-handed pitcher Victor Capellan have all been selected to the American Association All-Star Game on July 23rd at St. Paul’s CHS Field. At the time of the selection, Darvill was hitting .309 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 51 games, while leading all American Association shortstops with a .986 fielding percentage. Lambson was 5-2 while ranking eighth in the American Association in ERA (3.08) and second in strikeouts (67). Capellan ranked first in the league with 18 saves, and set the league’s all-time record for appearances on July 8th vs. St. Paul. SWING-AND-A-PIECE: After 57 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes’ collective swinging strike rate is 8.7 percent. The 2018 Major League average swinging strike rate was 11.6 percent. Second baseman Alex Perez has whiffed just 51 times out of 983 pitches seen (5.2%). From June 22nd-28th, Perez saw 103 consecutive pitches without a swing and miss. CHASING ‘SAL’: Goldeyes’ fourth-year left-handed pitcher Kevin McGovern moved into second place on the Goldeyes’ career strikeouts list on May 26th vs.
