Brannen, special to icenetwork Jef Billings, seen here posing with one of his Emmy Award-winning designs, left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating. -Getty Images Designer Jef Billings, who created costumes for skating stars for decades, died Tuesday at the age of 70. Billings was widely regarded as one of the most important designers in figure skating, creating opulent pieces drawn from his experience creating fashion in Hollywood. "His knack was to dive into the character that you were portraying on the ice and really bring out the flavor of that in the costume," said Kristi Yamaguchi, a frequent client of Billings. "Whether it was something comedic and fun, or elegant and glamorous, you put a Jef Billings on and it made you feel special on the ice." Scott Hamilton met Billings in 1984, when Billings showed him some sketches backstage at a tour stop. Hamilton liked his energy and enthusiasm, and the two started working together, forming a partnership that lasted decades. "There was no one like him," Hamilton said. "There are a lot of really talented people out there, but when you look at his technical ability of understanding fabric -- how to cut, how to sew, how to build and create something to make a perfect picture -- he just got it. He wanted women to look gorgeous; he wanted men to look like men. He wanted the skaters to represent whatever the character of the piece was, and he was just brilliant." Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte (ITA) win Short Dance Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte of Italy won the Short Dance. Defending champions Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron of France came second and Russia’s Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev follow in third place. Dancing to Waltz and Polka from “The Merry Widow”, Cappellini/Lanotte picked up a level four for the twizzles, the first part of the Ravensburg Waltz pattern, the step sequence and the rotational lift. The 2014 European Champions posted a new season’s best with 72.31 points. “We tried to improve the short dance a lot. We have made a lot of changes especially in the second half of the dance. We think that it has already paid off but since essentially the whole second part is completely different, it’s not as well trained as the rest of it. Sometimes it has been better than today but we are positive and optimistic for the World Championships”, Cappellini told the post-event press conference. MŰKORCSOLYA VILÁGVERSENYEK MAGYARORSZÁGON Ez idáig tizenötször rendeztek Magyarországon műkorcsolya világversenyt. - 5 alkalommal világbajnokságot, - 7 alkalommal Európa-bajnokságot és - 3 alkalommal Junior világbajnokságot Nézzük, hogyan is kezdődött. 1895. január 27. FÉRFI EB Az első kontinensbajnokságot a Budapesti Korcsolyázó Egylet megalakulásának 25. évfordulója alkalmából nagyszabású jubileumi ünnepségek keretében rendezték meg 1895. január 27-én a Városligetben, akkor még csak a férfiak részére. Mind a délelőtti iskolagyakorlatokban, mind a délutáni, öt percig tartó, szabad választás szerinti korcsolyázásban Földváry Tibor lett valamennyi bírónál a győztes, ezzel megszerezte a magyar sport első Európa-bajnoki címét. Második a későbbi háromszoros világbajnok osztrák Gustav Hügel lett. A harmadik helyen pedig az a német Gilbert Fuchs végzett, aki 12 évvel később ugyanitt, a 13. Európa-bajnokságon másodikként zárt. Hajós Alfréd, az első magyar olimpiai bajnok visszaemlékezésében így írt erről a napról: „Csikorgó hideg volt, de anyám tilalma ellenére elszöktem otthonról. Jóval a verseny kezdete előtt az épülő híd pillérein a legjobb helyet biztosítottam magamnak. Dideregve vártam a versenyt, de azután földöntúli boldogságot éreztem akkor, amikor Földváry diadalmaskodott. S amikor győzelme tiszteletére felcsendült a Himnusz, szemeim könnyeztek, s szívemben egy ellenálhatatlan vágy vert gyökeret: elérni azt a csúcsot, amelyre Földváry feljutott. Ideálom lett ő! Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA) danced to the silver medal, their first World medal while Canada’s Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje returned to the World podium for the first time after 2015 and earned their third medal. Papadakis/Cizeron delivered a beautiful dance to Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’, effortlessly completing intricate footwork and innovative lifts. The four-time European Champions, collected a level four for all elements and 30 perfect 10.00, including 10.00 from all nine judges for performance. The French Champions set a new highest score in the Free Dance with 123.47 points and overall with 207.20 points. “We’re really happy about what we did today, of course because of the scores but before that because of the feeling we had on the ice. We had so much fun and felt like we had so much control of what we were doing. It was one of the first times we achieved such a level of quality in our program and the connection was incredible between the two of us and with the public.
