BOX; 1408, Lattakia, Syria [email protected] (corresponding author); [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Syria’s total marine fisheries catches were estimated for the 1950-2010 time period using a reconstruction approach which accounted for all fisheries removals, including unreported commercial landings, discards, and recreational and subsistence catches. All unreported estimates were added to the official data, as reported by the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Total reconstructed catch for 1950-2010 was around 170,000 t, which is 78% more than the amount reported by Syria to the FAO as their national catch. The unreported components added over 74,000 t of unreported catches, of which 38,600 t were artisanal landings, 16,000 t industrial landings, over 4,000 t recreational catches, 3,000 t subsistence catches and around 12,000 t were discards. -

These specimens were sampled monthly during landings of coastal fi sheries. Among the whole samples, 85 individuals were not sexually identifi ed. The sexed specimens were composed of 260 males (46.84 %) and 295 (53.15 %). The monthly sex ratio showed signifi cant differences between males and females. Females outnumbered males for sizes between 130 and 199 mm, while males outnumbered females from the 200 mm size up. Sexes combined, the length-weight relationship had a negative allometry. The reproduction period of the common pandora starts in April and ends in August. The gonado- somatic index (GSI) reaches the highest values in June for males and in July for females. -

This paper describes fin whale photo-identification catalogues in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea that may house data useful for testing these hypotheses. There are three independent fin whale catalogues in the western North Atlantic. The North Atlantic Fin Whale Catalogue presently contains 841 unique individuals sampled along the coast of North America, from the New York Bight north to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Two catalogues in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, held by the Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS, n=430) and the Groupe de Recherche et d'Éducation sur les Mammifères Marins (GREMM, n=100), expect to begin reconcile their catalogues in the near future. A few small photo-ID holdings were identified in the eastern North Atlantic and the Europhlukes project provides an alternate option for photo-identification data across a wide range of species and institutions in the eastern North Atlantic. -

Introduction Zoology, like other branches of the natural sciences, has expanded greatly from the time of Aristotle, who may be regarded as its founder, to the present day. Zoology started from simple descriptions of animals, based in part on facts and in part on fantasy. Century after century, accounts became increasingly detailed, extending from representations of external features to anatomical descriptions of internal organs, while zoological collections were established to buttress such descriptions with reference material. Increasingly detailed knowledge of the different animal species afforded in the XVIII cent. the adoption of the Linnaean cataloguing system, still valid to this date. Two thousand years of zoological work also set the stage for Darwin’s unifying theory of evolution, which provided an explanation for the mechanisms responsible for the diversity of all existing animal species, of the relationships among species, and between species and their environment. Cetology (cetacean zoology) followed a similar development, although at a slower pace with respect to most branches of zoology. This was because cetaceans have never been easy to study. Compared to most species, and even to most mammals, cetaceans are relatively rare, and the body size of even the smallest species (let alone the largest) made it often problematic to bring specimens to a laboratory or to a collection for detailed investigation. -

D. Cornell University 2008 Coral reefs are increasingly suffering outbreaks of disease, causing dramatic declines in population abundance and diversity. One of the best-characterized coral diseases is aspergillosis, caused by the fungus Aspergillus sydowii. My dissertation investigates the origins and spread of aspergillosis in Caribbean gorgonian coral communities. The role of host resistance in aspergillosis is well established, however we know little about variation in resistance through time or the role of pathogen virulence. Using geographically distinct pathogen isolates in a clonally replicated design, I found equivocal evidence for variation in host response to pathogen isolates, with most fungal treatments showing no difference from the control. Interestingly, the two isolates that did induce a host response represent a pathogenic and an environmental isolate, suggesting that Aspergillus sydowii is a true opportunist. Aspergillus sydowii is a globally distributed saprophyte commonly found in soil, so its presence in marine systems raises questions about its origin. Using microsatellite markers, I analyzed the population structure of A. sydowii from diseased sea fans, diseased humans, and environmental sources worldwide. The results indicate a single global population. Moderate differentiation between isolates from sea fans and those from environmental sources, along with higher growth rates at 37°C by sea fan isolates, suggests that selection within the marine environment could be driving population subdivision.
