This paper describes fin whale photo-identification catalogues in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea that may house data useful for testing these hypotheses. There are three independent fin whale catalogues in the western North Atlantic. The North Atlantic Fin Whale Catalogue presently contains 841 unique individuals sampled along the coast of North America, from the New York Bight north to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Two catalogues in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, held by the Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS, n=430) and the Groupe de Recherche et d'Éducation sur les Mammifères Marins (GREMM, n=100), expect to begin reconcile their catalogues in the near future. A few small photo-ID holdings were identified in the eastern North Atlantic and the Europhlukes project provides an alternate option for photo-identification data across a wide range of species and institutions in the eastern North Atlantic. -

In October and December, the Commission discussed the FKNMS Restoration Blueprint. In January, FWC staff met with a variety of stakeholders to better understand their comments on particular issues addressed within the DEIS. Today, the presentation will cover all relevant aspects of the plan and staff recommendations based on a review of the science and stakeholder comments, which will be outlined in the next two slides. FWC requested and has been granted an extension for submitting agency comments to the FKNMS until April. Following the Commission’s response to the FKNMS, FWC will consider rulemaking for fisheries management items state waters. -

The many casualties and the high economic costs due to these events demand a continuous improvement in forecasting models in support of early warning systems. The main weather conditions that determine episodes of heavy rain over these regions are known, but the high number of processes and interactions taking place at different time and space scales makes it extremely difficult to increase the skill pertaining to their predictability. To deepen the knowledge of the phenomena, both numerical simulations and analysis of historical data sets are required. This paper presents the analysis of a five-year-long time series of rain data collected in the open Ligurian Sea from the fixed platform W1M3A and coastal stations. The analysis aims to characterize the main features of the precipitation over this area and its seasonal and annual variability. -

SAMMARCO Skeletal morphology of many scleractinian corals may be influenced by envi ronmental factors and may thus result in substantial intraspecific phenotypic plas ticity and, possibly, in overlapping morphologies between species. Environmen tally induced variation can also mask phenotypic variation that is genetically based. Morphological analyses and DNA sequence analyses were performed on Montas traea cavemosa from the Flower Garden Banks, Texas, and from the Florida Keys in order to assess variation within and between geographic regions. -

This instrument allows to understand the physical conditions and physical processes of the ocean water and their impact on the world climate. To construct a climatolog- ical field, it is necessary to perform a climatological analysis on an historical dataset. In this dissertation, we have constructed the temperature and salinity fields on the Mediterranean Sea using the SeaDataNet 2 dataset. The dataset contains about 140000 CTD, bottles, XBT and MBT profiles, covering the period from 1900 to 2013. The temperature and salinity climatological fields are produced by the DIVA software using a Variational Inverse Method and a Finite Element numerical technique to interpolate data on a regular grid. -
