Loew hat in seiner vorzüglichen Auseinandersetzung •der Ortaliden (Ztschr. f. d. gesammt. Naturwissensch. 1868, Bd, XXXII.) die Gatt. Geroxys Mcq., Schin. in mehrere Gattungen zerlegt. Zu ihnen gehören alle Arten der Ortalinen- Gruppe — ich rede hier nur von europäischen Formen —, deren drittes Fühlerglied an der Oberseite mehr weniger ausgeschnitten· (concav) ist und vorn daher recht deutlich spitz erscheint. Nicht ohne Grund werden die alten zwei Gattungen Melieria R. Desv. und Meckelia R. Desv. verworfen. Die von Loew angenommenen Gattungen lassen sich folgendermassen unterscheiden: 1. Thoraxrücken auch vor der Q,uernant mit Macrochäten (äussere Dorsocentralborsten *) Geroxys Mcq. (Type: crassipennis F.) „ vor der Q,uernaht ohne Macrochäten (2). 2. Vierte Längsader am Ende nicht vorwärts gebogen Hypochra Lw. • » ν » η vorwärts gebogen (3). 3. Hauptast der ersten Längsader nur am Ende beborstet Anacämpta Lw. (Type: hyalinata Panz.) „ „ „ „ in seinem ganzen Verlaufe beborstet Holodasia Lw. (Type : fraudulosa Lw.) Rondani hat in „Ortalidinae italicae" (Bullet. Soc. Entom. Ital. Firenze 1869,1.) für die Arten mit ausgeschnittenem 3. Fühlergliede die Gatt. Melieria R. Desv. und Geroxys Mcq. an- genommen. In erstere Gattung stellt er die Arten mit behaarter Fühlerborste und mit gegen die Mündung zu fast paralleler 3. und 4. Längsader, in die letztere die Arten mit kahler Borste und mit deutlich convergirender 3. und 4. Längsader. Melieria R. Myennidini, a New Tribe of Otitinae (Diptera: Ulidiidae)

The Myennidini, new tribe (subfamily Otitinae), is defined to include 14 genera: Myennis Robineau- Desvoidy, Oedopa Loew, Stictomyia Bigot, Paroedopa Coquillett, Pseudotephritis Johnson, Callopistromyia Hendel, Stictoedopa Brèthes, Pseudotephritina Malloch, Dyscrasis Aldrich, Ulidiotites Steyskal, Pseudodyscrasis Hernández, Arborotites Barraclough, Namibotites Barraclough, and Neodyscrasis Kameneva and Korneyev, n. gen. (type species: Pseudodyscrasis steyskali Hernández, 1988). These genera were previously erroneously assigned either to the Ulidiini or to the Pterocallini; the latter tribe is shown here to belong to the subfamily Ulidiinae. A phylogenetic analysis is provided for the tribes of Ulidiidae and the genera of Myennidini. Most genera are redescribed, and the distributions of all the species are discussed, including new records. The following synonymy is established: Myennis tricolor Hendel, 1909 = Myennis nebulosa Krivosheina and Krivosheina, 1997, n. syn. Abstract. The spatio-temporal variability of necrophagous fly assemblages in a linear series of habitats from central London to the rural surroundings in the south-west was studied using bottle traps between June 2001 and September 2002. A total of 3314 individuals in 20 dipteran families were identified from 127 sampling occasions. Calliphoridae accounted for 78.6% of all the dipteran speci- mens, with Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, being the most abundant spe- cies (2603 individuals, 46.9%). Using canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) on 72 fly taxa, six sampled sites and 36 environmental variables, three habitat types corresponding to three groups of flies were identified. These were an urban habitat characterized by C. vicina, Lucilia illustris (Meigen) and L. sericata (Meigen), a rural grassland habitat, characterized by L. caesar (Linnaeus) and a rural woodland habitat characterized by Calliphora vomitoria (Linnaeus), Phaonia subventa (Harris), Neuroctena anilis (Falle´n) and Tephrochlamys flavipes (Zetterstedt). Intermediate species (L. ampullacea Villeneuve and P. pallida (Fabricius), located between the three habitats, were also found. Temporal abun- dance of the 10 most abundant species showed fluctuations between seasons, having low numbers of captured individuals during winter. Correspondence analysis showed clearly seasonal patterns at Box Hill site. The species–habitat associations suggest habitat differentiation between necrophagous guilds in this area and may be of ecological value. -

Diptères téphritoïdes de la Manche (suite) : Pallopteridae, Platystomatidae, Ulidiidae (Diptera Tephritoidea) Ces dernières années, nous avions invité nos lecteurs à découvrir une famille fascinante de petites mouches aux ailes plus ou moins maculées, les téphritidés (LIVORY, LAIR & COULOMB 2017, complété en 2018 et 2020). Mais d’autres familles de moindre importance composent la super-famille des téphritoïdes et nous souhaiterions présenter trois d’entre elles dans ce nouvel article. Je donne ici quelques éléments de description et de biologie empruntés pour l’essentiel à OOSTERBROEK (2006). Présentation des familles Les Pallopteridae sont des mouches de petite taille assez difficiles à identifier même au niveau de la famille. Dans presque tous les cas, elles ne possèdent ni vibrisses ni soies pré-apicales aux tibias et la nervure sous-costale est complète. D’autres caractères propres à la nervation permettent de les distinguer des autres familles de téphritoïdes. Les ailes sont souvent marquées de taches diverses. Les mœurs de ces mouches sont encore mal connues : les larves se développent dans les plantes mais on ne sait pas toujours avec certitude si elles sont mycophages, phytophages ou carnivores aux dépens de coléoptères. Les imagos s’observent sur les fleurs, notamment celles des apiacées, les feuilles ou les troncs, et ils fréquentent des habitats souvent ombragés, à proximité de l’eau. La famille ne compte que 23 espèces en Europe parmi lesquelles 11 vivent en France et cinq dans la Manche dont quatre inédites. Cinq autres espèces pourraient se trouver dans notre département eu égard à leur distribution en Europe de l’Ouest. Les mouches de cette famille me paraissent peu abondantes sur le terrain. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Herina dimorphica n. sp. (type locality Israel) and H. sicula n. sp. (type locality Sicily, Italy) are described and illustrated, and a new species group (the Herina dimorphica species group) is established for both species. H. dimorphica is charac- terized by a sexually-dimorphic wing pattern and venation. H. sicula is similar albeit not sexually-dimorphic. Almost all known Herina species are assigned to one of nine species groups, which are keyed. Key words: Tephritoidea, Ulidiidae, Herina, species group Introduction With about 700 described species, the Ulidiidae are the third largest family in the Tephritoidea (Kameneva and Korneyev, 2010). The Palearctic ulidiid fauna comprises about 200 species (Soós, 1984; Zaitzev, 1984), with about half of them occurring in the Mediterranean basin. Morgulis (2012) treated 39 species from Israel and considered about one third of them to be undescribed. -

FOSSIL PERSPECTIVES ON THE EVOLUTION OF INSECT DIVERSITY Thesis submitted by David B Nicholson For examination for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Biology November 2012 1 Abstract A key contribution of palaeontology has been the elucidation of macroevolutionary patterns and processes through deep time, with fossils providing the only direct temporal evidence of how life has responded to a variety of forces. Thus, palaeontology may provide important information on the extinction crisis facing the biosphere today, and its likely consequences. Hexapods (insects and close relatives) comprise over 50% of described species. Explaining why this group dominates terrestrial biodiversity is a major challenge. In this thesis, I present a new dataset of hexapod fossil family ranges compiled from published literature up to the end of 2009. Between four and five hundred families have been added to the hexapod fossil record since previous compilations were published in the early 1990s. Despite this, the broad pattern of described richness through time depicted remains similar, with described richness increasing steadily through geological history and a shift in dominant taxa after the Palaeozoic. However, after detrending, described richness is not well correlated with the earlier datasets, indicating significant changes in shorter term patterns. Corrections for rock record and sampling effort change some of the patterns seen. The time series produced identify several features of the fossil record of insects as likely artefacts, such as high Carboniferous richness, a Cretaceous plateau, and a late Eocene jump in richness. Other features seem more robust, such as a Permian rise and peak, high turnover at the end of the Permian, and a late-Jurassic rise. -

ABSTRACT WALLACE, CHARLES REID. A Molecular and Morphological Analysis of Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea). (Under the direction of Brian M. Wiegmann). Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) is a relatively small family of true flies, called the “picture-winged flies” for their patterned wings. Its relationship to the other members of Tephritoidea, and its monophyly, has been well established, through both morphological and molecular analysis. Its subfamilial relationships, however, have received limited molecular analysis, having had a significant cross-section of the family’s taxa represented in only two molecular studies (Galinskaya et al. 2014, Han and Ro 2016). The most contemporary treatment of the classification of the family is by Kamenev and Korneyev (2006), according to which the Ulidiidae is divided into two subfamilies (Otitinae, Ulidiinae), each of which is further delineated into tribes (Cephaliini, Myennidini, Otitini; Lipsanini, Pterocallini, Seiopterini, Ulidiini, respectively), with an additional incertae sedis group of genera within the Otitinae. These classifications are based solely on morphological analysis, and there remain multiple outstanding questions of the placement and monophyly regarding the tribes or several large, diverse, or enigmatic genera. Here, using the next-generation sequencing method of anchored hybrid enrichment, I investigate the phylogeny of Ulidiidae with particular attention paid to the constituency and monophyly of hypothesized tribes, monophyly of the two sub-families, and placement of genera. Through maximum likelihood analysis, my results establish strong support for the separation of Ulidiidae into two monophyletic subfamilies, but challenges the assignment of Myennidini to the Ulidiidae, and potentially of Seiopterini to the Ulidiinae. It additionally suggests the paraphyly of the tribe Pterocallini with respect to both Myennidini and Lipsanini, but supports the monophyly of all other tribes.
