Amongst mixed reviews, the film provoked criti- cism regarding historical inaccuracy, cultural disrespect, and the sexualization of the titular Pocahontas as a Native American woman. Over the following years the studio has released a handful of films centered around Indigenous cultures, rooted in varying degrees of reality and fantasy. -

For anyone who lives on an island, surrounded by the deep, beautiful yet dangerous sea, it is a cruel thought that one day the island will be swallowed by the ocean, that ancient nurturing realm called Moana Nui in Oceania. How does it feel when the ocean forces you to abandon all that you hold dear? With Moana: the Rising of the Sea, islanders themselves set the scene for thought-provoking questions, answered in part by them through the accumulated wisdom of generations, while also calling Islanders are drowning as the sea invades the shore, and their families try to rescue them on the world to act on climate change. Hundreds of toddler-oriented channels on YouTube feature inoffensive, well produced, and educational videos. Unfortunately, inappropriate content that targets this demographic is also common. Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience. -

Choi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Natalie Jolly, Ph.D. School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences The intent of this thesis is to explore existing gender norms in mixed martial arts cultures. Masculinity is particularly valorized in sport, creating tension for female athletes who are forced to balance masculine norms with feminine beauty ideals. While there is a robust literature on the intersections of mixed martial arts (MMA) and masculinity, female voices are rarely heard in that literature. My research goes beyond the work of others by incorporating female voices and perspectives. Grounded in gender constructionism, my thesis addresses how both male and female MMA fighters conceive of their and others’ participation in gendered terms, and how this informs their gender identities. My thesis further examines the intersections of masculinity and gender that are readily observable within MMA, and those that are less conspicuous or go largely unnoticed. Finally, my thesis explores how norms perpetuate gender stereotypes and highlight differences, as masculine norms persist in the fighting culture. The examination of gender norms in MMA contributes to a larger body of research concerning gender roles and norms in other social contexts. -

Lakshmi P.Gopal 1(Assistant Professor on contract) 2(Department of English, St. Aloysius College, Edathua) ABSTRACT: Animation films are cultural products that exist in the cultural domain for a significant period in the form of prequels, sequels, series and adaptations into different languages. The tremendous impact it has on coming generation calls for a critical reading of the gendered notions presented in this novel media form. A critical reading of the gender roles presented by Disney Studios and Illumination Entertainment Studios shows howthe objective of positive representation is a distant dream. Film studies with respect to gender studies have already gained momentum with the publication of seminal texts such as Popcorn Venusby Marjorie Rosen, From Reverence to Rape by Molly Haskell, “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” by Laura Mulvey and through insightful studies by Mary Ann Doane. Gender Studies as it is now is a field of interdisciplinary study devoted to the studyof gender identity and gendered representation as categories of analysis. It also engages in studying the intersection of gender with other categories of analysis of identity including race, sexuality, class, disability and nationality.Though theories regarding post-feminist approaches are in vogue, the very need of a feminist reading of films with a focus on gender still has atremendous scope,as the critical research in thearea associated still hasn‟t achieved its objectives in representing awoman in a non-stereotypical, non-objectified role. -

Into the Unknown & Let it Go! Frozen Medley Into the Unknown The first section of the medley is focussed on ‘Into the Unknown’ from Frozen 2. The song was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who also wrote the music for the original Frozen film. The song is performed by Idina Menzel who is the voice of Elsa, and Aurora who is singer from Norway. Into the Unknown Into the Unknown is Elsa’s main song in the whole film. Throughout the song there is a mysterious voice that Elsa doesn’t understand at this point. She later finds that it is a siren call, calling out to her. The siren call is the ’Aahhh Aahhh’ part! The siren call is in the style of a Scandinavian form of music called kulning. Kulning Challenge! Kulning is used in both Sweden and Norway and is often used to call livestock (cows, goats, etc.) down from high mountain pastures where they have been grazing during the day. It is possible that the sound also serves to scare away predators but this is not the main purpose of the call. The call is high pitched and always starts by using your head voice and then moves up and down in small steps. Sometimes it can sound quite sad or haunting but the main aim is for the call to communicate over a long distance! Your challenge is to create your own kulning call and have a go at singing it outdoors! Into the Unknown & Let it Go Into the Unknown is based on Elsa's inner conflict over deciding whether or not to leave Arendelle and track down the source of a mysterious voice she keeps hearing.
