Name Dr Christine Fanthome and Dr Nick Haeffner Course Description This course aims to provide students with an overview of media in Britain within a social context. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between media, citizenship and democracy in the context of post-War British society. Consideration will also be given to the relationship between British and US media culture. Methodology Each teaching session will involve a lecture, illustrative material and a class discussion based on the set reading. Students should absorb as much film and television as they can out of class in order to participate fully in seminar discussions. **Please note: no laptops to be used in class. TV: A CULTURE OF ABUSE? THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL TV FESTIVAL AND 5 NEWS ANNOUNCE INDUSTRY-WIDE SURVEY RESULTS ON BULLYING AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT • 71% of those surveyed have experienced bullying at work • 68% of those who were bullied did not report it • 54% of those surveyed have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace • 84% of those experiencing sexual harassment did not report it EITF and 5 News conducted an anonymous, industry-wide survey to better understand how prevalent bullying and harassment is within television. A total of 315 people completed the survey, including employees and freelancers from broadcasters and independent production companies, in roles ranging from commissioners and executive producers, to development producers, production managers and series producers. The results showed that a shocking 71% have experienced bullying at work with 65% reporting that it took place in the office and 22% on set or location. Of those reporting as victims of bullying, 78% are female and 22% male and 38% are from indie sector, 31% are freelancers, 17% broadcasters, 14% other. 68% of those surveyed didn’t report it, 78% of which were concerned that if they did, they would lose their job, or it would have negative repercussions on their career. The survey also included anonymous comments which reflect the realities of the work place: “The stigma of reporting bad behaviour needs to be removed. If anyone (especially junior team members) complain about bullying behaviour / harassment, it is them who are isolated and struggle to find work again, rather than the perpetrator.” “Freelancing keeps people silent because they fear that today's bully is tomorrow's boss.” Meanwhile 54% of people have experienced sexual harassment at work, 84% of whom didn’t report it. -

Since then we have been encouraged to see chairmen and their businesses take ownership of this agenda. The figures speak for themselves. FTSE 100 companies have increased the number of women on their board from 12.5% in 2011 to 20.7% today, with the FTSE 250 similarly improving from 7.8% to 15.6%. We have also seen considerable efforts and a significant change of mindset from other key players such as investors, executive search firms and business leaders – all working together to bring about real change. We are also pleased to see that within the FTSE 100, 98% of boards now include women. Glencore Xstrata and Antofagasta – are now the outliers. This is a considerable turnaround from where 1 in 5 boards were all male in 2011. The FTSE 250 also continues in the same vein with around 50 all male boards today, down by well over half on 3 years ago. In addition, this report highlights the many strong women candidates capable of filling board positions. Cranfield have identified 100 of their top Women to Watch, which is included here. -
