Atkins Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music ii ©Copyright 2017 Michiko Urita iii University of Washington Abstract In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine in Modern and Pre-modern Japan Michiko Urita Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Patricia Shehan Campbell Music This dissertation explores the essence and resilience of the most sacred and secret ritual music of the Japanese imperial court—kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku—by examining ways in which these two songs have survived since their formation in the twelfth century. Kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku together are the jewel of Shinto ceremonial vocal music of gagaku, the imperial court music and dances. Kagura secret songs are the emperor’s foremost prayer offering to the imperial ancestral deity, Amaterasu, and other Shinto deities for the well-being of the people and Japan. I aim to provide an understanding of reasons for the continued and uninterrupted performance of kagura secret songs, despite two major crises within Japan’s history. While foreign origin style of gagaku was interrupted during the Warring States period (1467-1615), the performance and transmission of kagura secret songs were protected and sustained. In the face of the second crisis during the Meiji period (1868-1912), which was marked by a threat of foreign invasion and the re-organization of governance, most secret repertoire of gagaku lost their secrecy or were threatened by changes to their traditional system of transmissions, but kagura secret songs survived and were sustained without losing their iv secrecy, sacredness, and silent performance. -

Ruppert Histories of Premodern Japanese Religion We can start with Yoshida Kazuhiko’s 吉田一彦 Kodai Bukkyō o yominaosu 古代仏 教 をよみ なお す (Tokyo: Yoshikawa Kōbunkan, 2006), since it seems in many ways like a founder and precursor of the range of works written recently concerning early and, to some extent, medieval Japanese religion. Yoshida, who has long attempted to overcome common misconceptions concerning early Buddhism, succinctly tries to correct the public’s “common sense” (jōshiki 常識). Highlights include clarifications, including reference to primary and secondary sources that “Shōtoku Taishi” is a historical construction rather than a person, and even the story of the destruction of Buddhist images is based primarily on continental Buddhist sources; “popular Buddhism” does not begin in the Kamakura period, since even the new Kamakura Buddhisms as a group did not become promi- nent until the late fifteenth century; discourses on kami-Buddha relations in Japan were originally based on Chinese sources; for early Japanese Buddhists (including Saichō, Kūkai, and so on), Japan was a Buddhist country modeling Brian O. SPATIAL DIVERSITY AND TEMPORAL CHANGE OF PLANT USE IN SAGAMI PROVINCE, CLASSICAL JAPAN: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL APPROACH KATSUNORI TAKASE INTRODUCTION Agriculture was one of the most important economic bases of classical Japan and there were two main types of plant farming: paddy rice cultivation and dry field cultivation. There is no doubt that paddy rice cultivation was dominant in almost all of regions in classical Japan. At the same time, a lot of Japanese historians and historical geographers have disserted that farming in classical Japan was managed combining paddy rice cultivation and dry field cultivation. Classical Japanese state often recommended cultivating millets and beans beside paddy rice against a poor crop. Furthermore, in the 8th century, the state established the public relief stocking system (義倉制) for taking precautions of food shortage caused by bad weather, flood and earth quake and so on. In this system, foxtail millet was regulated to be stocked in warehouses. Therefore, agricultural policies of the state had obviously a close relationship not only with paddy rice cultivation, but also dry field farming. It is likely that combination balance ought to differ from region to region and it should reflect land use strategy of each settlement. However, there are just few written records on dry field farming in classical Japan especially before the 11th century. Even if there are fragmentary descriptions on farming, they show only kinds of grain and their crop totaled in each province or county. Therefore, it is very difficult to approach to micro-scale land use and plant use in classical Japan. Nevertheless, pictorial diagrams and wooden strips have begun to play an important role to reveal these problems. -

This article throws light on how each community in the peripheral regions of Japan views this dance form. By doing so, we also focus on how regional cultural resources contribute to regional sustainability in these areas. Regional cultural resources are often viewed as tourism resources—that is, they are used to boost tourism. However, some of the cases considered in this paper show that regional cultural resources can be used in other manners. In other words, these cases show that tourism is not the only way to sustain regional cultures. The findings presented in this article pertain to the broader question of how to properly implement a culture- based sustainable regional development plan. The findings and suggestions presented in this article can be applied to other contexts also. Introduction This article throws light on the ways in which Japan’s declining birth rate and growing elderly population impact the cultural resources of its peripheral regions. This article also focuses on the broader question of how to properly implement a culture-based sustainable regional development plan to develop regional resources and revitalize and preserve traditional communities. Following the Second World War, Japan experienced a steady wave of urbanization. -

The civil government at the imperial court continued, but the real rulers of the country were the military daimy class. You will be using art as a primary source to learn about samurai and daimy life in medieval Japan (1185-1603). Kamakura Period (1185-1333) The Kamakura period was the beginning of warrior class rule. The imperial court still handled civil affairs, but with the defeat of the Taira family, the Minamoto under Yoritomo established its capital in the small eastern city of Kamakura. Yoritomo received the title shogun or “barbarian-quelling generalissimo.” Different clans competed with one another as in the Hgen Disturbance of 1156 and the Heiji Disturbance of 1159. The Heiji Monogatari Emaki is a hand scroll showing the armor and battle strategies of the early medieval period. The conflict at the Sanj Palace was between Fujiwara Nobuyori and Minamoto Yoshitomo. As you look at the scroll, notice what people are wearing, the different roles of samurai and foot soldiers, and the different weapons. What can you learn about what is involved in this disturbance? What can you learn about the samurai and the early medieval period from viewing this scroll? What information is helpful in developing an accurate view of samurai? What preparations would be necessary to fight these kinds of battles? (Think about the organization of people, equipment, and weapons; the use of bows, arrows, and horses; use of protective armor for some but not all; and the different ways of fighting.) During the Genpei Civil War of 1180-1185, Yoritomo fought against and defeated the Taira, beginning the Kamakura Period. -

These principles are reflected in a number of key features of the new hall, as follows: z The hall’s structure is seismically isolated to withstand great earthquakes and has been designed to be strong and durable with built-in flexibility to facilitate future restructuring. z Energy will be saved through natural ventilation and lighting, using LED (light-emitting diode) and solar panels. z For the purposes of disaster management, the new hall is equipped with an emergency power generator, a hovering space for a helicopter, open space and a well. z Inside, a universal design has been adopted for the disabled, elderly, and mothers with young children. -

odern horse racing in Japan had its beginnings in racing events that were organized by foreign residents of Yokohama in 1862. In 1861, when Japan was about to move from the feudal system into the Meiji Restoration, foreign residents living in Yokohama, predominantly British, introduced the first Western-style horse racing by establishing the Yokohama Race Club to Japan. Western style horse racing was held in foreign enclaves, and hence, unfortunately, very little is known or recorded about initial era in Japan’s modern horse racing history. At about the same time that the name of the Japanese central city was changed from Edo to Tokyo, Western-style horse racing began to be found in the major metropolitan cities across the country. In 1906, the government embarked on a policy which tacitly allowed to bet. This led to the introduction of modern horse racing featuring sales of betting tickets in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other metropolitan cities, from which most racing operations benefited. However, this profitable system was short lived; two years later, the government prohibited betting and instituted a system of paying direct subsidies for prize money and other horse racing expenses. During this subsequent period of government-subsidized horse racing, prominent legislators, businessmen, as well as breeders, began active efforts to introduce a horse racing law. Eventually the government began to take proactive position to promote horse racing in order to expand breeding in Japan and to improve quality of the Japanese horses. In 1923, horse racing legislation, so greatly desired by the horse racing industry, was enacted and led to the formation of 11 racing clubs. -
