Surprisingly, this "new norms" literature has almost completelyignoreddecadesofsystematictheory,experimentation,andfieldresearchon normative processes by social psychologists. We demonstrate that there are multiple mechanisms by which normative influence operates, each with its own principles and consequences. We also identify a host of situational and dispositional (individual - difference)moderatorsthateitherattenuateoramplifytheeffectsofnormativeinfluence sources. Finally,weshowthattheinternalizationprocessismuchlessmysteriousthan some have suggested; it can occur through any of several well -studied processes. By taking these theoretical distinctions and moderators into account, the new norms literature wil l necessarily become more complex, but not necessarily chaotic or incoherent. Feldman&MacCoun - 1/16 /03 - 2 I. Introduction FollowingElickson’sbook,OrderWithoutLaw,1lawandeconomicscholarshave taken the leading role in the legal scholarship of social norms. Dozens of papers have beenwrittenonvarietyoftopics,showingtheimportanceoftakingnormsintoaccount when studying the effect of legislation on people’s behavior. 2 Given the amount of review papers and symposiums, which have analyzed the current and potential contribution of the new norm -scholarship on legal scholarship, we will not attem pt to conduct a full review of the various ideas developed by scholars working in this scholarship. Scholarsofthelawandeconomicsofnorms(henceforth,“LENscholars”)have proposed various theoretical mechanisms. Ellickson has relied on the concept of reciprocity and reputation,3 citing it as the main reason that people engage in norms, hence arguing that norms could govern efficiently in close -knit groups or when reputations could be monitored. Following the reputation rationale, Posner 4 has argued thatnormsserveasameansofsignalingtoothersone’slowdiscountrateandthatthey could, therefore, serve as good business parties. Moving to a less instrumental and materialistic account of norms, McAdams argues that people’s primary motivation for following norms stems from their need for others’ approval to maintain their self - esteem. 5 Cooter goes even further, arguing that, ultimately, self -enforcing mechanisms areonlyensuredwhenpeopleinternalizethenorm. 6 1 SeeRobertC.Ellickson, OrderWithoutLaw:HowNeighbo rsSettleDisputes 9(Harv .Univ . Feldman&MacCoun - 1/16 /03 - 4 Of course, historical precedence does not give one discipline sufficient justification to criticizeorpatronizemodelsdevelopedbyotherdisciplines.Wedonot contendthateconomicpsychologicalmodelsshouldreplaceeconomicmodels –indeed, existing psychological accounts have important limitations -- but that recent law and economics accounts of social norms would benefit from taking into account relevant princi ples and findings from social psychology. We will show that psychologists have alreadydevelopedelaborateandempiricallybasedanswersformanyofthequestionsthat lawandeconomicscholarsaredealingwithtoday. Our discussion of relevant findings wi ll be organized around three questions. First, how do norms operate? Some LEN scholars have recognized that a few basic normative influence processes, but we will show that social psychology has detailed numerousnormativemechanismsindetail.Second,when donormsoperate?Wewill identifyanumberofrobustgeneralizationsaboutclassesofsituationalanddispositional (individual -difference) factors that moderate 11 the norm -behavior relationship. Third, howdoesinternalizationoccur?LENscholars havetreatedthisquestionasacomplete enigma, but we will identify several well -understood processes by which actors internalizenormativemessages. CLARK POWER LAWRENCE KOHLBERG The Vocation of a Moral Educator INTRODUCTION Shortly after Lawrence Kohlberg’s death, I (Power, 1991) noted that perhaps the most revealing statement about Kohlberg’s life was the epilogue to his first book, “Education for Justice: The Vocation of Janusz Korczak” (Kohlberg, 1984). In that Epilogue, which I helped him to compose, he re-told the story of Janusz Korczak, who gave up a lucrative medical practice to work as a moral educator in orphanages for Jewish and Christian children in Warsaw. That work led him to the Warsaw ghetto and finally to Treblinka, where he died with the orphans whom he refused to abandon. Throughout his life, Korczak had a remarkable sense of being called to care for poor and neglected children. In his early career as an author and a medical doctor, he dedicated himself to serving the poor. A champion of children’s rights, he left medicine for education in orphanages because he wanted to treat children’s souls. In establishing “Little Republics” in which children engaged in democratic governance, his orphanage schools resembled the just community programs that Kohlberg himself established. To claim that Kohlberg had a vocation to be a moral educator may strike many as puzzling or even preposterous. Kohlberg is best known for his pioneering contributions to developmental psychology, especially for his stages of moral development. Yet, as one who worked closely with Kohlberg during the latter part of his career, I believe that we cannot understand his life as a whole without considering his vision of moral education and the significance his work in the just community programs had for him.

Lawrence Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development from Wikipedia Lawrence Kohlberg's stages of moral development constitute an adaptation of a psychological theory originally conceived by the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget. Kohlberg began work on this topic while a psychology graduate student at the University of Chicago[1] in 1958, and expanded upon the theory throughout his life. The theory holds that moral reasoning, the basis for ethical behavior, has six identifiable developmental stages, each more adequate at responding to moral dilemmas than its predecessor.[2] Kohlberg followed the development of moral judgment far beyond the ages studied earlier by Piaget,[3] who also claimed that logic and morality develop through constructive stages.[2] Expanding on Piaget's work, Kohlberg determined that the process of moral development was principally concerned with justice, and that it continued throughout the individual's lifetime,[4] a notion that spawned dialogue on the philosophical implications of such research.[5][6] The six stages of moral development are grouped into three levels: pre-conventional morality, conventional morality, and post-conventional morality.

    Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development Working as a developmental psychologist then turning his interest to the field of moral education, Lawrence Kohlberg became to be well known for his theory of moral development. His theory spurred the interest of the psychological community on moral development (Nucci, 2002). His ideas were influenced by Jean Piaget, John Dewey, and James Mark Baldwin. He argued that experiences shape children’s understandings of moral concepts such as justice, rights, equality, and human welfare. Kohlberg developed his theory from the research that he conducted at Harvard’s Center for Moral Education (Barger, 2000). To evaluate the moral stages, Kohlberg made a series of moral dilemmas that pit one moral value against another (Kalat, 2002). He observed the explanations, not the choices, that the subject made. The explanations were used to match the subject to one of Kohlberg’s stages. Kohlberg’s theory of levels and stages of moral reasoning is supported by findings from longitudinal and cross-cultural research. Kohlberg divided moral development into six distinguished stages which can be identified into three major levels. The first level is the level of pre-conventional morality. The first stage is defined by punishment and obedience. This stage is characterized by the elementary school level (Barger, 2000). People follow the rules of authority because they are afraid of punishment, which is related to Piaget’s identification of the stage of ego-centrism (Nucci, 2002). In this stage, people consider something to be bad if it is related with punishment. In contrast, if something brings rewards, it is considered as good.

    Social Psychology Glossary This glossary defines many of the key terms used in class lectures and assigned readings. A Altruism—A motive to increase another's welfare without conscious regard for one's own self-interest. Availability Heuristic—A cognitive rule, or mental shortcut, in which we judge how likely something is by how easy it is to think of cases. Attractiveness—Having qualities that appeal to an audience. An appealing communicator (often someone similar to the audience) is most persuasive on matters of subjective preference. Attribution Theory—A theory about how people explain the causes of behavior—for example, by attributing it either to "internal" dispositions (e.g., enduring traits, motives, values, and attitudes) or to "external" situations. Automatic Processing—"Implicit" thinking that tends to be effortless, habitual, and done without awareness. B Behavioral Confirmation—A type of self-fulfilling prophecy in which people's social expectations lead them to behave in ways that cause others to confirm their expectations. Belief Perseverance—Persistence of a belief even when the original basis for it has been discredited. Bystander Effect—The tendency for people to be less likely to help someone in need when other people are present than when they are the only person there. Also known as bystander inhibition. C Catharsis—Emotional release. The catharsis theory of aggression is that people's aggressive drive is reduced when they "release" aggressive energy, either by acting aggressively or by fantasizing about aggression. Central Route to Persuasion—Occurs when people are convinced on the basis of facts, statistics, logic, and other types of evidence that support a particular position.

This thesis—which captures the practical nature of morality—is in tension with a Humean constraint on belief: belief cannot motivate action without the assistance of a conceptually independent desire. When defending cognitivist motivational internalism it is tempting to either argue that the Humean constraint only applies to non-moral beliefs or that moral beliefs only motivate ceteris paribus. But succumbing to the first temptation places one under a burden to justify what is motivationally exceptional about moral beliefs and succumbing to the second temptation saddles one with a thesis that fails to do justice to the practicality intuition that cognitivist motivational internalism is sup- pose to capture. In this paper, I offer a way of defending cognitivist motivational internalism, which does not require accepting that there is anything motivationally unusual about moral beliefs. I argue that no belief satisfies the Humean constraint: all beliefs are capable of motivating without the assistance of a conceptually independent desire. NISBETT TANLEY SCHACHTER was one of the very few social psycholo- Sgists ever elected to the National Academy of Sciences (in 1983). His contributions ranged across the study of com- munication and social influence, group processes, sources of the affiliation motive, intellectual and temperamental correlates of birth order, nature of emotional experience, people’s ability to correctly attribute the causes of their behavior to external versus internal factors, causes of obesity and eating behavior disorders, the addictive nature of nicotine, psychological reactions to events that affect stock market prices, and the proper interpretation of “filled” (“uh,” “er”) pauses in speech. Few, if any, social psychologists ever made contributions over a wider range of topics. Remark- ably, the diverse content of the contributions was tied to- gether by a small number of powerful theoretical concepts. Stanley Schachter was born on April 15, 1922, to Nathan and Anna Schachter in Flushing, then a semi-rural part of Queens, New York. Knowing that he wanted to go away to school, but knowing nothing of the rarefied and preppy atmosphere he was about to enter, he chose Yale, where he initially majored in art history.
