Meanwhile the Visconti Dukes of Milan dominated local affairs and became major patrons of the arts, creating a court of unrivalled wealth and beauty.

We must not forget that, in the past, in the vicinity of Chiaravalle and Viboldone, the navigable channel Vettabbia, dating back to Roman times, was an important means of transport of goods towards the Lombard capital, thus connected with the river Lambro, the Po and with Comacchio. ABBAZIA DI CHIARAVALLE The Cistercian A b b ey of Santa Maria di Chiaravalle, was founded in Lombardy, already home to numerous Benedictine monasteries, in 1035, thanks to the generosity of the Milanese population. It is the work of the n o ble Burgundian San Bernardo (1090 - 1153), abbot of Clarivaux and charismatic leader of the yo u n g Cistercian religious order, an important branch of the great Benedictine fa m i ly. Like the nearby abbey of Morimondo, the church and the adjoining monastery of Chiaravalle were built according to the tradition of the Cistercians, exploiting the typical local bricks. The abbey, erected near the Roman road towards the river Po , brought prosperity and importance to the economy throughout the area, thanks to the work of reclamation of the monks and the consequent flourishing of fa r ming and agriculture. The imposing elegant towe r, which still stands with its conical spire on the green countryside of Milan, was a symbol of reference for all the surrounding areas and a sign of the undisputed power of the monastery and the religious order.

The project for its restoration and enhancement and its new display, in which the work will be set, will be presented to the city and international public on 27 March 2019 at the exhibition ‘Il Raffaello dell’Ambrosiana. In Principio il Cartone’. Fondazione Fiera Milano, official partner of the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana for the two-year period 2018-2019, will contribute to supporting promotional activities for Raphael’s Cartoon, completely restored, as well as the enhancement of the Institution's Leonardo patrimony during the celebrations for the 5th centenary of the Florentine genius’s death. This is the largest Renaissance cartoon to have come down to us (it measures 285 x 804 cm) and was completely hand-drawn by Raphael (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520) as a life-size preparatory drawing of the School of Athens, one of the four frescoes commissioned from Raphael in 1508 by Pope Julius II to decorate the Stanza della Segnatura at the Vatican. Although the work is known as the School of Athens, the correct title is Philosophy: the four walls of the Stanza della Segnatura depict – in keeping with a complex iconographic programme – Philosophy, Theology (Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), Jurisprudence (The Virtues) and Poetry (Parnassus).

    Archivio Storico Civico Biblioteca Trivulziana Leonardo da Vinci’s Notebook at the Sforza Castle A significant episode of Milanese collecting Leonardo da Vinci’s Notebook (Codex Trivulzianus 2162) is a paper manuscript, small in size, dating back to 1487-1490 during the artist’s first stay in Milan, in which the artist drew physiognomic sketches, architectural drafts for the Duomo and other Milanese buildings, and also mechanical sketches and designs for war machines. On seven of the pages there are drawings made using a metal stylus that are clearly visible when the pages are illuminated at a low angle. In some cases the impressions have been drawn over, imprecisely, by another hand. The manuscript is distinctive for its long lists of words written in Leonardo’s characteristic cursive script from right to left. The lists record the artist’s attempt to enrich his vocabulary with words of Latin origin, so as to make his scientific writings appear more authoritative and so as to be able to better grasp the writings of other humanists and men of science. After the death of the artist, the Notebook was left to his pupil Francesco Melzi. Together with other Leonardo’s manuscripts, the Notebook came into the possession of Pompeo Leoni. In 1632 it was acquired by Galeazzo Arconati, who then donated it to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in 1637, taking it back at a later date in exchange for another of Leonardo’s writings, Manuscript D. All traces of the codex are lost until the mid-18th century, when Don Carlo Trivulzio (1715-1789) bought it from Don Gaetano Caccia of Novara in exchange for a second-hand “silver repeating clock”.

    Milan, June 12, 2019 The “Festa del Paradiso” closes the 24th World Congress of Dermatology The event will take place on June 14th in the Cortile delle Armi of the Castello Sforzesco More than five hundred years have passed since the extraordinary party that sealed the wedding of Gian Galeazzo Sforza and Isabella d’Aragona. The “Festa del Paradiso” is huge scenic machine built in 1490, a unique atmosphere that will be revived in a few days in the Cortile delle Armi of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. A video will be projected on the Torre del Filarete that will tell the story of Leonardo da Vinci and Ludovico Sforza, also called “il Moro”. The work of lights, scheduled for Friday, June 14th at 10.20pm, has been included in the schedule of the celebrations of the Municipality of Milan. It will officially close the 24th World Congress of Dermatology scheduled at MiCo (Milan Convention Centre) until Saturday, June 15th. The sound and light show will be accompanied by two performative moments: one will be the dance of human horses, which will tell the love of Leonardo and the Prince for horses, and the other the aerial ballet of the spouses, a performance in which six riders turn into luminous horses five meters high. The “Festa del Paradiso” will be preceded by a show of water and lights in Piazza del Cannone, scheduled at 9.30pm, and that will be visible from the Arco della Pace. The dancing fountains will use one of the natural elements on which Leonardo has worked most of his life while here in Milan, perhaps water.

However, in 1450 they were replaced by the Sforzas who continued these traditions until they were expelled by the French in 1498, returning intermittently until the Duchy was reabsorbed into the Imperial territories by the Habsburgs. Throughout the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries the Milanese Court employed an extraordinary range of architects, sculptors, painters, musicians and humanists.
