People Magazine shares their love for Raphael Saadiq “You know you have major music cred when you get to play Keith Richards to Mick Jagger during the Rolling Stone’s debut performance on the Grammy stage. That’s exactly what a guitar-slinging Raphael Saadiq did during a memorable to Solomon Burke last February. Long underappreciated by the masses, Saadiq fol- lows up that big moment with another career highlight: Stone Rollin’, a retro-soul gem that’s even better than 2008’s The Way I See It. Mining the vintage R&B of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, Saadiq channels legends like Sly Stone (“Heart Attack”), Marvin Gaye (“Movin’ Down The Line”), Smokey Robinson (“Just Don’t”) and Curtis May- field (“The Answer”) while showing he can rock old-school too on the surf throw- back “Radio.” Sure, he’s done this kind of nostalgic thing before, but when it’s this stone-groovin’, who cares? Rating: 4 stars” - Reprinted from People Magazine UR Chicago gives you an idea of life at a Scattered Trees show “Just when my back couldn’t feel any more sore up against an oak bench and I couldn’t doodle another scribble while one of the openers finished up their semi-gothic, cello-led set, the Chicago-bred Scattered Trees awoke me from my otherwise tepid slumber. Starting their Schubas’ concert slowly and romantically with a steady shake of a tambourine, the Trees’ music instantly permeated the space with intrigue. Between two keyboards, four guys, a girl, and one head of dreadlocks, Trees let out a reverberation of light “oohs” and “ahhs” to preface smooth and placid lyrics and further set the sullen yet sophisticated vibe in their show. The opener song, and subsequent tone of the room, escalated to achieve an irresistible pulsation held up by pounding and efficient percussion. “The stars are shining on your face” lyrics wafted over lightly bobbing, admiring heads and it seemed the infamous, oversize candles of the venue flickered with an even more auspi- cious light. Blending the sounds of bass, keyboard, drums and tings of a symbol seamlessly while affixed to keen lead and back-up voices, one could have watched this show and thought the group was recording their album. Remind- ing us we weren’t invading their studio time, one mem- ber instructed everyone to “enjoy this and think of Star Wars” before playing the next song. Partly soft rock, partly alternative, the ensemble delivered their hit “Love and Leave,” solidifying the pillow talk soundtrack portion of the evening then amped up the energy with “Four Days Straight,” followed by another song featuring a darker twist while still maintaining their lovable indie ‘we love harmonizing’ theme. While these endearing musicians were emphatically tactful and somber throughout (I thought I may have been able to burst a metaphorical emo balloon with my pen at one point), they did deliver intermittent bursts of raucous sound from the drums and viscerally loud singing from their unified gut. This was beautifully elicited when lead singer, Nate Eiesland, slowly and powerfully sang “Where You Come From.” It was at this point in the experience one could close their eyes and feel surrounded by an elaborate, warming camp fire, just short of flame and soot. Following that delightfully scenic experience was a song that included the lyrics “where are you Jesus?,” which proved them capable of taking a loaded question and packaging it neatly into an electro rock tune. This song closed out their set, at which point Eiesland confessed, “If I had it my way, you’d hit replay now.” He and his equally polite and lovely bandmates then answered the plea for “one more song!” by gracing their loving fans with an encore.” - Reprinted from UR Chicago Magazine Online, 5/11/11 Listen to everything and find out more at www.rightarmresource.com as well as facebook.com/rightarmresource or twitter.com/rightarmjesse RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 6/1/11.
