  • An Ideological Analysis of the Birth of Chinese Indie Music
REPHRASING MAINSTREAM AND ALTERNATIVES: AN IDEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BIRTH OF CHINESE INDIE MUSIC Menghan Liu A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill Esther Clinton © 2012 MENGHAN LIU All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis project focuses on the birth and dissemination of Chinese indie music. Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself.

  • Music Review
6/14/2017 Rich text editor, grade_submission_feedback_comment, press ALT 0 for help. < I like this a lot, but it feels .. heavy. Even the lede sentence is soooo long. Is there a way you can lighten it up a little? Be careful about overdoing it. There are so few albums that are really ABOVE, you know? And we need a little old school in here because I don't know any of the references you make. The past year in popular music has fostered the explosion of Electronic Dance Music and a new generation of neonclad ravers in America, taking the music from its roots in the clubs and abandoned warehouses of inner cities and dropping it on festival stages big and bright enough to see from space. As tidal waves of young, talented artists, and veterans alike, fight for their share of the spotlight, RussianGerman producer Anton Zaslovski, better known as Zedd, has separated himself from the heard with his gutpunching electrohouse style and the genre’s most anticipated fulllength album release since it’s rise into the American mainstream, his debut record, Clarity. After sending OWSLA record label head honcho and dubstep king, Skrillex, a sample of his work in 2011, Zedd punched his ticket straight to the top of the game. Although Clarity is the artist’s first studio album, it’s seamless flow from track to track and heavy electro influences point to a musician wise beyond his years. Traditionally, EDM has been a genre dominated by single releases with many artists struggling to create cohesive fulllength albums that make any sort of lasting impression on listeners.

TM I am Still Me Bringing Comfort and Joy To Kids & Young Adults Enduring Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplants Special thanks to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for helping make this book possible. I AM STILL ME THE DRAGONFLY FOUNDATION forward I never thought my children would be affected by cancer. Yet, at age 10, my son Matt was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. While Matt was thrown into treatment, our entire family was affected by the trauma of his diagnosis and the horrific side effects he experienced, including his hair loss. Matt was devastated when he found out he would lose his hair. Even though he liked to keep his hair short, Matt felt that losing his hair was a concrete identifier, something that further separated him from his peers. He didn’t want to have to worry about his outside appearance changing when he already felt so much worse internally. For us all, Matt’s hair loss was an instant, visual sign that he was a cancer patient. I remember talking to the hospital staff about his illness and the timing of his hair loss, looking for control in the chaos around us. I wanted to know when he would lose his hair and how I could Copyright © 2014 by The Dragonfly Foundation prepare my husband, my children and myself for our emotional response and the public’s reaction to seeing my son bald. • Ny Single Fra Eliza Doolittle
Første låt ut er ”Big When I Was Little” som slippes via Parlophone Records.
