IUCN World Heritage Outlook: https://worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org/ Socotra Archipelago - 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment Socotra Archipelago 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment SITE INFORMATION Country: Yemen Inscribed in: 2008 Criteria: (x) Socotra Archipelago, in the northwest Indian Ocean near the Gulf of Aden, is 250 km long and comprises four islands and two rocky islets which appear as a prolongation of the Horn of Africa. The site is of universal importance because of its biodiversity with rich and distinct flora and fauna: 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species do not occur anywhere else in the world. The site also supports globally significant populations of land and sea birds (192 bird species, 44 of which breed on the islands while 85 are regular migrants), including a number of threatened species. The marine life of Socotra is also very diverse, with 253 species of reef-building corals, 730 species of coastal fish and 300 species of crab, lobster and shrimp. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 02 Dec 2020 SIGNIFICANT CONCERN Socotra’s values are exceptional on a global scale and have been comparatively well preserved until very recently, within a historical local context (Van Damme and Banfield, 2011). Nonetheless, much is currently at stake in order to conserve the site values, as the island is undergoing rapid development that brings about unprecedented pressures and threats (Attorre and Van Damme, 2020), and critical conditions associated with political turmoil could negatively affect the archipelago. Current and potential threats to Socotra’s values are increasing rapidly.

About the authors: Adnan Hashem: He is director of the Researches Unit at the Abaad Center for Studies and Research. He is specialized in the Gulf affairs and Iranian politics. He published many researches and studies in Yemeni and international periodicals and participated in most of the center’s studies and research since he joined the Abaad in January 2017. He was the main researcher in some of the center’s studies, in particular the latest three studies on terror brutality (Al-Qaeda - Houthis - ISIS). Abdul-Salam Mohamed : He is the founder and head of the Abaad Center for Studies and Research. He works as a consultant in the Yemeni Ministry of Information. During 2015, he worked as a consultant with the Gulf Cooperation Council. He supervised and participated in most of the studies, researches and publications of the Abaad Center since the center was established in January 2011. Peace talks were expected to begin mid-November, after Houthi representatives announced their willingness to accept the UN Security Council Resolution calling for Houthi withdrawal from seized territories. UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed has been holding talks for weeks with all sides to try to launch peace talks.

Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 06/18/2020 6:12:18 PM PRESS RELEASE Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen Launches Energy and Water Projects in Socotra Socotra, Yemen / 11 June 2020 - The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) has launched a package of development projects in Socotra Governorate for the activation and operation of the two power plants in Hadibu and Qulansiyah and the management of water resources. Tariq Al-Zaidi, director of SDRPY in Socotra, confirmed in a speech at the launch that the program had built the Hadibu and Qulansiyah power plants to the highest international technical specifications, the same as for Saudi electricity stations. Governor of Socotra Ramzi Mahrous extended his thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for all the development projects presented to the Yemeni people in all Yemeni governorates in vital sectors, adding that these projects enjoy the guidance of the Saudi leadership and direct follow-up by SDRPY General Supervisor Ambassador Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber. Mahrous stressed that the electricity stations would be of significant support to the province, which has suffered from frequent interruptions of electricity services and other difficulties. These stations, he explained, could be considered serious tributaries of development in the province. The project launch was attended by Joint Forces Command Maj. Gen. Ali Salmeen, Director of Governorate Security Col. Faiz Al Shathi, Director General of Electricity Salem Hadef, Director General of the Bureau of Public Works Abdul Salam Al-Jamhi, and a number of public figures and security and military officials in the province.

WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN YEMEN 2019 October 5, 2020 www.mwatana.org Mwatana is an independent Yemeni organization involved in defending human rights. Mwatana started in 2007, but the former regime of president Ali Abdullah Saleh declined to provide the organization with the permit even after re-submitting the request for several years. With the 2011 uprising that ended Saleh’s regime, Mwatana was able to obtain the necessary permit on April 23, 2013. In 2018, the Baldwin Award recognized our work. Human Rights First announced awarding the 2018 Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty to Mwatana.
