Page 2 Newtown News KS2 Cluster Trip to Balmoral Show On Friday 15th May Mrs Henry and Mrs Managh had the pleasure of accompanying 16 of the KS2 pupils to Balmoral Show. The trip was organized by Mr Justin Toner from St Malachy’s Primary School Ballymoyer. The entire day was free to the pupils and included a schools tour as soon as we arrived at the show grounds at 10am. During the trail we joined with 3 other local schools (St Malachys Ballymoyer, Kingsmills and St Laurence O’Tooles Belleek) and the children enjoyed see- ing around the main events. After a bite of lunch we were then free to further enjoy the show in our own school groups. Time was spent in the shopping village, the cattle and sheep houses, viewing machinery stalls and the fun fair. We called at the Massey Ferguson stall to meet Chloes Nanny and Granda where we were made very welcome. Along the route we saw Andrew Donaldson, Elle Corkey, Rachel McLean, James McLean and Daisy Lines. Everyone had a fantastic day with the rain only coming on as we were ready to head back to the buses. The children all had their bags laden with pens, rul- ers, rubbers and keyrings in typical Balmoral Show fashion!! We were all home safe and sound shortly after 4pm. Not long to go until Armagh Show !! The Armagh County Agricultural Show and Country Festival will be held on Saturday 13th June 2015 in the beautiful surroundings of Gosford Forest Park. Remember to pay a visit to the Craft Tent where the artistic talent of local chil- dren is amazing to see. Our children have been working hard over the past month to create masterpieces to put on display on the big day. So be sure to pop along for a wee look !! The After School Loom Club children were also busy making bracelets. Kathryn heads off on Monday 1st June with Highways Byways Ministries, we wish her and all her companions a very safe journey and look forward to hearing about their visit and of course seeing photos of the children receiving the bracelets on their return. As always the pupils and friends of Newtownhamilton Primary School have shown outstanding kindness and generosity. Bibletime Prize morning with Sam Balmer and his family It was lovely to welcome Sam Balmer and his family back to our school for the annual Bibletime Prize Giving Assembly. Sam and his family work hard to produce and distribute the Bibletime booklets to many schools across the province, so we were delighted to be able to put on a special assembly just for them. Mrs Henry presented Sam with a donation for Sow2Reap. Reception-P2 visited the Dental Clinic It was National smile week and all the pupils from Reception to P2 headed off to the Dental Clinic down in Newtownhamil- ton Health Centre where Dental Nurse, Daphne Calvin made them all very welcome. Daphne told them all about the impor- tance of looking after their teeth. Everyone got a turn on the dentist chair and to see how all the equipment worked. They even got to suck some water up using the special suction machine. Then before they left everyone got a sticker and a goodie bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and some leaflets. On the way back to school we met Henry’s Granny Anderson who was about to get on the bus to go to Newry, Henry told her all about his visit to the dentist. The Foundation Class Tooth brushing Club will recommence this month to keep all those lovely teeth shiny clean !! • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

But above all else they are the repository of the Irish language which was spoken widely by the people up to the 1920's in areas like Dromimee, Killeavy and Mullaghbane. • Governor's Report
HAMILTONSBAWN PRIMARY SCHOOL ANNUAL GOVERNORS' REPORT 2014-15 Dear Parent I am pleased to have this opportunity to present to you the Governors' Report for 2014-15 for Hamiltonsbawn Primary School. It is our intention that you should be kept informed about school activities and this report is one of a number of ways in which this information will be provided. Don’t forget to also visit our new school website at: www.hamiltonsbawnps.com which is updated weekly. The report can only be a snapshot of what goes on in the school, but nevertheless gives something of the flavour of the excellent work undertaken by Mrs Hunter and newly appointed Principal - Mr. Hutchinson (from 1st November) and all the staff. The school continues to very effectively meet the educational and pastoral needs of all the children and continues to engage in the latest technology having recently purchased I-Pads and new Numeracy scheme to develop more specific and ‘active’ learning. Page 7 sets out the In-service courses attended by staff during the year thereby ensuring that our methods of delivering the curriculum are relevant and up- to-date. Pages 8-12 set out the achievements attained by the school during the year and also gives some indication of the variety of work undertaken. Pages 13-14 set out the extra-curricular activities undertaken by the staff and external coaches for the benefit of the children and I would stress that this is over and above the normal curriculum requirements and is much to the credit and enthusiasm of the teaching staff.

RESPECTIVE FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND PRINCIPAL IN RELATION TO ADMISSIONS TO THE SCHOOL The Board of Governors draws up the admissions criteria. The Principal, on behalf of the Board of Governors, will apply the criteria in the order indicated to select pupils for admission. ADMISSIONS The lodging of an application is interpreted by the Board of Governors as an indication that the parents and the child concerned accept and are in agreement with the ethos, philosophy, aims, policies and regulations of the school including the Code of Conduct and Positive Behaviour Policy. County Armagh Scarce, Rare and Extinct Vascular Plant Register John Faulkner Edited by Julia Nunn Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR) 2015 Vascular Plants Register County Armagh County Armagh Scarce, Rare & Extinct Vascular Plant Register John Faulkner Records editor: John Faulkner Author of species accounts: John Faulkner General editor: Julia Nunn 2015 This register is one of a series, planned eventually to cover the whole of the British Isles, as an initiative of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI). The purpose of the series is to document records of species that are rare or scarce, and highlight those that are a potential source of concern. In Northern Ireland, Rare Plant Registers are being produced for each county as a co-operative venture between BSBI and the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR) of National Museums Northern Ireland. Most of the records which comprise the core of this register have been extracted from the databases held by the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording at the National Museums Northern Ireland, and by the records editor in his capacity as BSBI vice-county recorder for Armagh These databases contain the overwhelming majority of County Armagh records for vascular plants. There are, however, a few potential sources of old records which require further research, and some existing herbarium specimens which require expert identification. For these and other reasons, the Register should be seen as an initial version which will be updated in due course. • Clement Reid of Lisnadill, County Armagh, Northen Ireland
Clement Reid of Lisnadill, County Armagh, Northen Ireland Clement Reid (b. 1845) my great great grandfather was born in northern Ireland near Armagh. He was a tenant of land near Letmacollum, Lisnadill owned by the Earl of Gosford. His daughter Isabella Reid was born in Belfast in 1872 and married William Tritton in 1895. Their son Robert Arthur Tritton Welch was our maternal grandfather. Griffith ’s Valuation is the name widely given to the Primary Valuation of Ireland, a property tax survey carried out in the mid- nineteenth century under the supervision of Sir Richard Griffith. The survey involved the detailed valuation of every taxable piece of agricultural or built property on the island of Ireland and was published county-by-county between the years 1847 and 1864. Figure 1:Griffiths valuation register for Clement Reid’s land in Lisnadill Parish. Figure 2: Griffiths Valuation Map (1847) for the Letmacollum area. Clement Reid’s land was applotments 15 and 16. 1 The tithe applotment records for 1832 list three Reid farms in Letmacollum. One held by Thomas senior, one by Thomas junior and one by William. One of those is likely to be Clements’ father and the other two could well be related, being in the same small townland. Figure 3: Same area on Google satellite view. No change in the field boundaries and houses in the same locations. Figure 4: View to applotments 15 and 16 from the east along the Seagahan road Lisnadill (from the Irish: Lios na Daille, meaning "ringfort of the blindness") is a townland and parish in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.
