Coelogyne flaccida Sectie : Epidendroideae, Ondersectie : Coelogyninae Naamverklaring : De geslachtsnaam Coelogyne is afgeleid van het Griekse koilos=holte en gyne(guné)=vrouw. De stempel, het vrouwelijk orgaan van de plant, heeft aan de voorzijde een diepe holte. Flaccida betekent slap, wegens de hangende bloeiwijze. Variëteiten : var.crenulata Pfitz. :de overgang naar het voorste gedeelte van de middenlob is fijn getand. var.elegans Pfitz.: terugbuiging van de lip is onduidelijk waardoor de middenlob nauwelijks te onderscheiden is; bloemen groter en bijna reukloos. Distributie : Himalya: Nepal, Sikkim en Assam tot Burma. Komt voor op een hoogte van 1000 tot 2000 m , meestal epifytisch, zelden lithofytisch. In dichte bomenbestanden op bemoste takken. Beschrijving : Coelogyne flaccida groeit in dichte pollen in humusresten in de oksels van boomtakken. Bulben dicht op elkaar, verbonden door korte rhizomen, 10 x 2,5 cm groot en al in het eerste jaar duidelijk in de lengte gegroefd. Rijpe bulben hebben aan de basis 2 droge schutbladen en dragen 2 leerachtige bladeren, tot 20 x 4 cm, smal elliptisch, spits toelopend. De bloeistengel ontwikkelt zich uit een bijzondere uitloper in de oksel van een schutblad en staat dan op een heel klein onderontwikkelde bulbe, geheel door groene schutbladeren omgeven. De bloeistengel gaat hangen, wordt tot 25 cm lang en draagt 6 - 10 bloemen. Bloemen stervormig, 4 -5 cm in doorsnee, onaangenaam geurend. Sepalen vlak, smal elliptisch, spits toelopend; petalen teruggebogen, vrijwel even lang, maar half zo breed. Kleur wit tot licht crèmekleurig. Lip in drieën gedeeld, de zijlobben staan rechtop en omvatten half het zuiltje. De middenlob steekt naar voren, met teruggeslagen of gebogen punt. -

Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’. -

Activities such as amenity forests, camping sites and outdoor sports can cause destruction to natural habitat. Geologically, the formation involved granites as the core and quartzite covers the outer layer of the mountain. This indicates the establishment of hill heath forest vegetation, mostly on the summit region and lowland dipterocarp forest vegetation at lower region. The uniqueness of its vegetation attracts botanists and collectors to do series of plant collection since 1845. -

E-mail: [email protected] The main phytogeographic regions within the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula are delimited on the basis of analysis of recent literature on geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region, as well as numerous recent literature information on phytogeography, flora and vegetation. The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1.
