THE RECEPTION and CENSORSHIP of SURREALISM in ALBANIA Abstract: Surrealism Was Censured and Harshly Repudiated in Post-War Communist Albania
Section 2. Literature Bora Kuçuku, University of Tirana Faculty of Foreign Languages French Language Department E-mail: [email protected] THE RECEPTION AND CENSORSHIP OF SURREALISM IN ALBANIA Abstract: Surrealism was censured and harshly repudiated in post-war communist Albania. Even though several Surrealist authors were important members of communist parties in France and other countries, and even though they were prominent voices who, through their works have had an undeniable impact on the establishment of the communist political ideals, Enver Hoxha did not spare his ideological scissors of censorship on Surrealist literature. Heading the black list was Louis Aragon, with whom Hoxha is thought to have met during his student years in France. The aim of this article is to show — through the official texts and the translated texts of that period — how flagrant, ideologically-biased and non-coherent the censorship and the perception of Surrealism were in Albania. The censorship in Albania differed from that in other communist countries. Censorship of Surrealism and (mis)interpretation of Surrealism in other communist countries were not as radical as those effected in Albania. The article draws attention to a number of fragments from Surrealist literature published in communist Albania. The purpose the authorities had in publishing these fragments is obvious and unequivocal and is oftentimes ridiculous — even though the fate of these works and of the Albanian intellectuals and readers who were punished and interned because they desired to understand and relish this greatest artistic movement at the start of the twentieth century was severe. To this day the cultural gap for the Albanian readership concerning Surrealism has not been completely filled. -
Mots-clés : littérature, échanges interculturels, langue de l’Autre, francophonie The Albanians and the Other : a crossroad for French and Albanian cultures) Abstract This article deals with certain aspects of French culture and thought contribution in Albania and exchanges and intercultural relations between France and Albania. The absorption of French critic and aesthetic thought in its evolutionary stages through Albanian authors’ writings constitutes the first aspect of our study. -

THE SECOND COLLABORATION Keywords: Albanian drama theater, stage, rehearsals, post World War II 1948-2008 BETWEEN ALBANIANS DURING THE Albanian drama, etc. EIGHTIES Actress, Director Rozina Kostani Professor at University of Arts, Tirana - Albania Abstract The second collaboration between Albanians happens with ―Nita,‖ a production by writer Josip Rela and director Serafin Fanko. Our journey will take us to the Albanian Drama Theater in Skopje, in 1980. The event takes place eight years later. In 1972, the first Albanian director invited by the Theater of Nationalities was Kujtim Spahivogli, who put on stage ―Korça Carnivals,‖ a comedy by Spiro Çomora. Then, during a 10-day-visit of the delegation of the Theater of Nationalities Skopje, in Tirana, in 1973, two plays were put on stage: ―The Gone‖ and ―Korça Carnivals.‖ In 1980, he was the second and last director, invited by Albania, until after the 90ties, when Albanian totalitarian regime fell. The director, Serafin Fanko, together with set designer, costume designer and notable painter Ksenofon Dilo, put on stage the drama ―Nita,‖ of the Arbëresh author Josip Rela; its premier took place on May 10, 1980 in the Albanian theater drama in the Theater of Nationalities in Skopje. Director Serafin Fanko is the first director who put the national flag in the Albanian drama set, which caused commotion in the Macedonian government and the police tried to stop the performance, but they weren‘t successful due to the pressure of the public. -
