Now Sunday 17th February! We took part in many group challenge’s, kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling plus an array of team building activities. We also where able to make a visit to a small island off the Whangaparaoa coast called Tiri Tiri Mitangi. A nature reserve that had been brought back from complete deforestation due the tireless efforts of some amazing volunteers. The Group was also honoured by the cultural experience of attending the New Zealand Navy’s Marae. Everyone that attended RYLA where strangers, but by the end of 7 days, all had formed life long friendships. Each of us who attended left differently from when we arrived, whether it be the new friendships, the inspiration and motivation to do something amazing, or simply leaving in a different state of mind, being able to think about things differently that we had done before. For me and many others who attended, RYLA is truly a live changing experience, It was a really fun week, so many good times had and great friends made. To any one that might be considering applying for RLYA 08 or are just thinking about what it might be like, I encourage every one to apply and discover that for themselves. Our pictures show the District Governor Carol with Brent Adams. President Tracey Greening and Ashlan Bates cutting RYLA - Together we achieve the Birthday Cake - Tom.

Back in April of last year, I was fortunate enough to be selected along side Hannah Evans to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards or RYLA. Young people from the Rotary District 9910 attended a 7 days leadership event sponsored by the Whangaparaoa Rotary Club and held at the Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC). The 9910 District covers most of the and North Shore area in New Zealand as well as Norfolk Island and other pacific Islands. RYLA brings together young people from all over to take part in a leadership building and personal development course. Arriving in New Zealand I was a little unsure of what to expect, and the only person I would know going to RYLA would be Hannah. The days following our arrival, we all, a group of about 30 young people, took part in a full on, challenging program that kept everyone busy for the duration of RYLA. We were honoured to have so many guests, wanting to talk with us on such a range of issues. Of course, since RYLA is mainly Leadership orientated, this dominated most discussions. Our Guest speakers ranged from Fitness and Motivational trainers, successful business entrepreneurs, mountaineers, conservation volunteers Available at : - Foodlands - Paw Paws as well as an interesting visit from a successful NZ Marks Bakery and Selected Cafés stage hypnotist. When she returned home she joined the Administration, initially in the Registrars Office and then in the Companies and Legal Advisers office. Those were the days of major overseas company registrations in Norfolk Island. She was there until she married Alan and had 3 children: Vanita, Dwain and Lavina. Her 3 children became her focus in life, for the rest of her life. She loved them and supported them in their growing up, their education, their marriages and their work. They reciprocated in their love and affection and care. The three of them are here today to say farewell. Lavina having travelled from the other side of the world. Vanita and Dwain have shared their tributes to Di. Di left the Island again, with the three children, and for a time returned to the Bank, now Westpac. She was at the Turramurra Branch, where she was caught up in an armed hold up. Then she transferred to Carlingford Branch, where she experienced a second armed hold up. She declined to wait around for the third experience, and called it a day with Westpac. Di spent 2 _years in America – California. Vanita and Lavina went to school there. Whilst in California she experienced the warm Norfolk Island connection with Cora and Ric Kleiner and their family. When Di returned home again with her family, she mainly worked for Pine Trees, for a long time – until she was forced to give up work for health reasons. We all know that Di had many talents. She was an accomplished cook. She learnt readily and well from her mother and established her own expertise. When in America – the land of pre- packaged and factory prepared food – Di still baked her own and prepared the family’s meals from fresh and individual ingredients. Lavina took home cooked meals to school. Indeed Lavina was hot property, in that everyone wanted to be in the queue to swap lunch items with her. Items which Di had cooked and prepared. Dianne has musical talent. She loved music and played the piano by ear. The children’s favourite was ‘Guitar Boogie’ and this they demanded she play repeatedly for them to dance. She obliged of course. She was a great ukulele player. She was an accomplished horsewoman. She rode competitively in the Royal A & H Show, and won ribbons to prove her prowess. CONCERT TICKETS ONLY National Park News And Views The Norfolk Island Group is an important site for nesting seabirds in the South Pacific. A total of 15 species nest here. Many of the species that once bred on Norfolk now only breed on Phillip Island, Nepean Island and other small islets. Four of the seabird species that breed on Phillip Island are present in extremely low numbers; these are the Providence Petrel, Kermadec Petrel, White-necked Petrel and Flesh-footed Shearwater. The Providence Petrel breeds only on Lord Howe Island and Phillip Island. The global population of Kermadec Petrels has declined alarmingly. The species has been lost from Lord Howe Island, currently only surviving on the summit of Balls Pyramid and the population on Raoul Island (from the Kermadec group) is now virtually extinct. The White-necked Petrel only breeds on Phillip Island and Macauley Island (from the Kermadec group). The flesh-footed Shearwater only breeds on Lord Howe Island and New Zealand, and has not yet been properly documented to be breeding on Phillip Island, although it is believed they are. Because these species only breed in one or two other places in the world, the population of seabirds on Phillip Island is of great conservation significance. These seabird colonies at present are free from mammalian predators. If cats, rats or mice were ever to reach Phillip Island, the possibility of the decline or extinction of the seabird population would be highly likely. If any of these mammals became established on Phillip Island, the consequences would be catastrophic. These exotic pests would not only decimate seabird colonies, but would also pose a threat to the native gecko, skink, centipede and hibiscus. The Norfolk Island National Park highlights as ever the need to be aware of the contents of the baggage taken out to Phillip Island, and to be wary of any unwanted visitors in backpacks. Likewise the national Park supports the untiring work of the Norfolk Island Quarantine officers. Such vigilance is vitally important to the safety of the Island and it’s tourism industry which depends so much on our unique biodiversity. Also, we would like to warn visitors to Phillip Island of a wash out at the ‘Grassy Patch’ at the base of the cliff at the landing site, caused by heavy run-off. At this stage, there is no immediate danger from the wash out but all visitors should be extremely careful around the area. The National Parks are looking into the matter, and any further courses of action will be notified publicly. See you in the Park…

Helping Customs protect our borders is as simple as being aware of your surroundings. You know your local area and you know what looks or sounds suspicious on land, at sea, or in the air.
