  • Chronology of Evolution of the Camel by Frank J. Collazo December 13, 2010
Chronology of Evolution of the Camel By Frank J. Collazo December 13, 2010 50-40 million years ago (Eocene): The oldest known camel is Protylopus, appeared 40-50 million years ago (Eocene) in North America. It was the size of a rabbit and lived in the forest. Later, camels spread to the savanna and increased their size. In Oligocene, 35 million years ago, Poebrotherium was the size of a roe deer but already resembled a camel. 45-38 million years ago: The ancestors of the modern camel lived in North America. The ancestors of the lamas and camels appear to have diverged sometime in the Eocene epoch. 24-12 million years ago: Various types of camels evolved. Stenomylus was a gazelle like camel. Alticamelus, which lived 10 to 2 million years ago, had a long neck similar to a giraffe. Procamelus, just 1.2 m tall (like a modern Lama) evolved in the Camelus genus (to which modern camels belong). Lamas migrated to South America, and all the camels in North America died out. Once in Asia, camels migrated through Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. 3-2 million years ago: Camelus passed from North America in Asia through Behringia 2-3 million years ago. 2 million years ago: The ancestors of lama and vicuña passed into the Andes coming from North America. The last camel surviving the cradle of the camel evolution, North America, was Camelops hesternus, which disappeared 12-10,000 years ago together with the whole mega fauna of North America (mammoths, mastodons, giant sloth and saber toothed cats).

  • Arab Revolt 1 Arab Revolt
Arab Revolt 1 Arab Revolt Al-Thawra al-`Arabiyya) (Turkish: Arap İsyanı) was initiated byﺍﻟﺜﻮﺭﺓ ﺍﻟﻌﺮﺑﻴﺔ :The Arab Revolt (1916–1918) (Arabic the Sherif Hussein bin Ali with the aim of securing independence from the ruling Ottoman Turks and creating a single unified Arab state spanning from Aleppo in Syria to Aden in Yemen. Background Further information: Second Constitutional Era (Ottoman Empire) The rise of nationalism under the Ottoman Empire goes back to 1821. Arab nationalism has its roots in the Mashriq (the Arabs lands east of Egypt), particularly in countries of Sham (the Levant). The political orientation of Arab nationalists in the years prior to the Great War was generally moderate. The Young Turk Revolution began on 3 July 1908 and quickly spread throughout the empire, resulting in the sultan's announcement of the restoration of the 1876 constitution and the reconvening of parliament. This period is known as the Second Constitutional Era. The Arabs' demands were of a reformist nature, limited in general to autonomy, greater use of Arabic in education, and changes in conscription in the Ottoman Empire in peacetime for Arab conscripts that allowed local service in the Ottoman army. In the elections held in 1908, the Young Turks through their Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) managed to gain the upper hand against the rival group led by Prens Sabahaddin. The CUP was more liberal in outlook, bore a strong British imprint, and was closer to the Sultan. The new parliament comprised 142 Turks, 60 Arabs, 25 Albanians, 23 Greeks, 12 Armenians (including four Dashnaks and two Hunchas), 5 Jews, 4 Bulgarians, 3 Serbs, and 1 Vlach.

  • COLONIAL TROOPS a Global War 1936-1945 Expansion by Stewart Brewer & Will Henson V BETA-2
Global Command Series COLONIAL TROOPS A Global War 1936-1945 Expansion By Stewart Brewer & Will Henson v BETA-2 Introduction HBG is excited to present Colonial Troops (COL), an examination of colonial units in World th th War II. During the last half of the 19 and into the 20 century imperial powers such as Britain, France, and others occupied colonies around the globe from Africa to India, and from the Middle East to the remote Pacific. In these colonies, the mother countries drew extensively on their territories for both material and human resources. Colonial troops served in both combat and non-combat roles. Hundreds of thousands of men from Europe’s colonies were sent to fight in theaters around the globe. Their contributions came in many forms, from infantry and desert fighters, to horse and camel cavalry. Now HBG is proud to bring the service of some of these fighting units to Global War 1936-1945 v3. Set Contents 21 Colonial Unit Markers 1.0 Colonial Units 1.1 Colonials: Colonial units represent army units raised from the forces in colonies. Some nations have Colonial Infantry listed on their National Reference Sheets (e.g. British Commonwealth, France, and Italy.). This set features specific units that may be built in specific locations. As stated in the rules for Global War 1936-1945 v3, Colonial Infantry do not require a factory to be built or placed. Unless otherwise indicated, the land zone they are placed in must have the player’s roundel on it, and it must have been possessed since the beginning of the turn.

Spanish Barb Aramco 2007 Volume 58, Number 1 January/February 2007 • ROBERT GRUTZ Juanita is a pure Spanish Barb living outside Tucson, Arizona. Her ancestors were the Barb horses that crossed into Spain from North Africa in the eighth century with the Arab–Berber invasion, and from there traveled with the Spanish conquistadors to the New World. Written by Jane Waldron Grutz In the year 715, the first Muslim governor took office in southern Spain, a land of verdant valleys, rich pastures and seemingly unlimited possibilities—the land the Arabs called al-Andalus. After the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632, the message of Islam had swept out of Arabia, eastward as far as the Punjab and west into North Africa. The old Byzantine provincial capital at Carthage fell to the Muslims in 698, and a dozen years later, a combined Muslim army of Arabs and Berbers entered the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish Barb Aramco 2017 Page 1 AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY A Carthaginian gold coin, struck in about 260 BC, depicts a Barb of the Numidian cavalry, which fought both for and against Carthage in its long struggle with Rome. There were many reasons for the Muslim successes in what is now Spain and Portugal. The Visigoth rulers were divided over their own succession, as apt to fight on one side as the other. The disenchanted slaves, serfs and freemen of Iberia easily succumbed to a force more motivated than their own. But there was a military reason as well: The Visigoth knights, weighed down by heavy armor, were no match for the highly mobile Arab and Berber cavalry, which was mounted on exceptionally swift, agile horses known as “Berbers” or, more commonly, “Barbs.” FROM ARTE DA CAVALLARIA DE GINETA E ESTRADIOTA, ANTONIO GALVANI D’ANDRADE (1677) When the Muslims rode into Spain in the year 711, they did so on Barbs fitted with short stirrups and neck bits, a riding style later called jineta that gave the rider great maneuverability.

  • Islamic Apocalypse
The Rise of Islam, Time, and the End of Anxiety: Apocalypse and Apocalypticism in the East Mediterranean at the Beginnings of Islam Gordon D. Newby Islam began in an age of anxiety. From well before the birth of Muhammad in 570 C.E. through the beginning of Islam in 610 C.E. to 628 C.E., the Roman (Byzantine) and Persian (Sassanian) empires waged inconclusive and devastating wars throughout the eastern Mediterranean world. All of Arabia was caught up in the conflict as Arabs were camel cavalry for both sides and were subjects of imperial ideologies and religious proselytization. The international trade that had brought wealth to the tribes and towns along Arabia’s trade routes was in shambles, and many expected that those terrible events presaged the end of the world. It is little wonder that apocalyptic writing was one of the most popular genres of this age. Apocalypse as genre and apocalypse as mode of thought had been popular for many centuries before the Quran and the rise of Islam. According to Ernst Käsemann, “Die Apokalyptik ist die Mutter aller christlichen Theologie gewesen,”1 and, while that judgment has been roundly challenged, it cannot be denied that preoccupations with eschatological beliefs have been a powerful force in shaping religious thinking in the varieties of Christianities, Judaisms, and Islams. One difficulty with understanding apocalypticism as a phenomenon is that apocalypticism, while appearing to be nearly universal, at the same time takes on extremely local characteristics, depending on the place, time and particular religious group. So where do we look for the “Islamic Apocalypse” and what is its particular function in Islam? One obvious place to look is the Quran.2 In this project, I argue that both Wisdom and Apocalyptic discourses are present in the Quran.

Hubbard, Student, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, USA 6 !John Cathey, MS, formerly Senior Editor, Annals of Saudi Medicine, Banglamung, Chon 7 Buri, Thailand 8 Based on historical interpretations of the Surat̄ al-Fil̄ , the 105th Meccan sura of the 9 Qur’an, an epidemic occurred near Mecca circa 570 C.E. (common era), the Year of the 10 Elephant in Islamic history. The five verses of the Sura are thought to be an allegorical 11 description of the “elephant war epidemic,” so named because invading Axumite 12 (Ethiopian) forces from present-day Yemen included one or more war elephants. The 13 elephants refused to enter the city, causing the Axumites to halt the attack. Interpreted 14 literally, divine intervention defeated the invaders by sending a flock of birds (ababil) 15 that dropped pellets—a possible allusion to pustules—onto the Axumites, maiming them, 16 and ending the siege of the city. Early historians described the signs and symptoms and 17 thought they were allegorical for either a smallpox or measles epidemic; available 18 descriptions favor smallpox. The residents of Mecca were spared. Descriptions of the 19 birds and use of the term ababil for birds are consistent with barn swallows (Hirundo 20 rustica, subspecies transitiva), which collect clay pellets to make nests. They are attracted 21 to flies following domestic animals.
