Photo: Mike Roberts The Matterhorn is undeniably the most magnificent and well-known peak in the Alps. Its bold pyramidal shape evokes emotions of wonderment and even fear in those who view it for the first time, as its four distinct faces stand omnipotent and menacing over the green meadows below. Separated by sharp ridges, the four faces are orientated to the four points of the compass, the northern aspects within Switzerland while the southern side lies in Italy. We ascend via the Hörnli Ridge that separates the rich heritage adds to the superb facilities, including North and East Faces via a long and technical route catered huts and lift systems offering services not requiring the utmost attention from climbers. UNESCO World Heritage Properties in Switzerland February 2021
UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland February 2021 www.whes.ch Welcome Dear journalists, Thank you for taking an interest in Switzerland’s World Heritage proper- ties. Indeed, these natural and cultural assets have plenty to offer: en- chanting cityscapes, unique landscapes, historic legacies and hidden treasures. Much of this heritage was left to us by our ancestors, but nature has also played its part in making the World Heritage properties an endless source of amazement. There are three natural and nine cultur- al assets in total – and as unique as each site is, they all have one thing in common: the universal value that we share with the global community. “World Heritage Experience Switzerland” (WHES) is the umbrella organisation for the tourist network of UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland. We see ourselves as a driving force for a more profound and responsible form of tourism based on respect and appreciation. In this respect we aim to create added value: for visitors in the form of sustainable experiences and for the World Heritage properties in terms of their preservation and appreciation by future generations. The enclosed documentation will offer you the broadest possible insight into the diversity and unique- ness of UNESCO World Heritage. If you have any questions or suggestions, you can contact us at any time. Ride the Glacier Express in Excellence Class
Press release One for the bucket list: ride the Glacier Express in Excellence Class St. Moritz, Switzerland – June 2019: The Glacier Express (www.glacierexpress.ch) has long been considered one of the world’s great train journeys but now, in its first summer season, the introduction of Excellence Class has placed it firmly on the luxury travel bucket list. This new premium class, available to just 20 people per train, offers passengers a truly exceptional experience and breath-taking views as the train wends its way through the Swiss Alps, evoking memories of the golden age of train travel. Typical Alpine scene; the famous Landwasser viaduct The Excellence Class experience starts at the platform, where the red carpet is (literally) rolled out and a concierge checks in passengers, takes their baggage and offers them a glass of Champagne. Once onboard, passengers are waited on hand and foot by the experienced crew, who share anecdotes, point out highlights (such as the Landwasser Viaduct) and serve an exquisite five- course meal of authentic Swiss fare, freshly cooked, along with matching wines, followed later by afternoon tea. In addition, every passenger is given their own tablet, which is packed with information about the journey and the regions passed through, which can be read from the comfort of their plush leather seat while admiring the unadulterated views from their guaranteed window seat. Alternatively, passengers can stretch their legs and head to the Excellence Class’s well-stocked Glacier Bar, with its over-sized golden compass, which is a source of great amusement when it spins relentless as the train passes through spiralling tunnels.
