Perhaps its most mystifying element is its final zoom, which gradually falls on a picture of Jack Torrance beaming in front of a crowd with the caption “July 4 th Ball, Overlook Hotel, 1921.” While Bill Blakemore and others examine the film as a critique of violence in American history, no scholar has thoroughly established the connection between July 4 th, 1921, Jack Torrance, and the rest of the film. -

When used effectively, sounds in film can create emotion, give meaning to a character’s actions or feelings, act as a cue to direct viewers’ attention to certain characters or settings, and help to enhance the overall storytelling. Sound essentially acts as a guide for the audience as it evokes certain emotions and reactions to accompany the narrative unfolding on-screen. The aim of this thesis is to focus on two specific films of contrasting genres and explore how the music and sounds help to establish the genres of the given films, as well as note any commonalities in which the films follow similar aural patterns. By conducting a content analysis and theoretical review, this study situates the sound use among affect theory, aesthetics and psychoanalysis, which are all highly relevant to the reception of music and sound in film. Findings consist of analyses of notable instances of sound use in both films that concentrate on the tropes of juxtaposition, contradiction, repetition and leitmotifs, and results indicate that there are actually similar approaches to using sound and music in both films, despite them falling under two vastly different genres. -

(Ph.D., English) Raising the Last Hope: British Romanticism and the Resurrection of the Dead, 1780-1830 Thesis directed by Professor Jeffrey N. Cox This dissertation examines the way the Christian doctrine of bodily resurrection surfaces in the literature of the British Romantic Movement, and investigates the ways literature recovers the politically subversive potential in theology. In the long eighteenth century, the orthodox Christian doctrine of bodily resurrection (historically, a doctrine that grounded believers’ resistance to state oppression) disappears from the Church of England’s theological and religious dialogues, replaced by a docile vision of disembodied life in heaven—an afterlife far more amenable to political power. However, the resurrection of the physical body resurfaces in literary works, where it can again carry a powerful resistance to the state. -

I like films where I’m forced to feel something. –Interview with Jennifer Kent, December 20141 For a film that has been described as ‘startlingly original’ and widely celebrated for its ‘emotional realism’, Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook (2014) is in many ways very generic.2 While this might seem like a shortcoming, on the contrary, the film’s restaging of familiar generic tropes facilitates a highly effective cinematic experience. This article considers the ways in which The Babadook repurposes the horror film to produce a moving exploration of maternal ambivalence, mobilising elements of the maternal melodrama and female gothic in the process. In so doing, the film foregrounds issues of genre and gender that inhere and overlap in these categories. In particular, the film’s focus on the protagonist’s conflicted experience of motherhood explores what Molly Haskell identifies as the great unspoken of the ‘woman’s film’, namely, women’s guilt for their ‘inadmissible feelings’ about motherhood.3 Considering the film in this light draws on Sue Thornham’s reading of We Need To Talk About Kevin (dir.
