VOLLEYBALL DROPS CLOSE FIVE-SET BATTLE WITH STERLING

Winfield, Kan. - The Southwestern College volleyball team dropped a close contest to the on Wednesday, falling 3-2 in five sets with scores of 19-25, 25-15, 25-13, 22-25, 15-12 in favor of the visitors. The Lady Builders charged out to an opening game one win, posting one more kill on three fewer attack opportunities. It was an even- ly-played set to start the match, but Southwestern kept their mistakes to a minimum as they committed half of the amount Sterling did to help them take the early 1-0 overall lead. The Lady Builders hit 29.4 percent in the first set compared to the Warriors’ 16.2 percent effort. Sterling coasted to wins in the next two frames, outscoring Southwestern 50-28 in those two sets combined. The Lady Builders strug- gled with errors over the course of that span, enduring a margin of minus-13 in that category. The Warriors hit over 40 percent in set two and helped force 13 Southwestern miscues in set three to take the 2-1 lead in the match. The Lady Builders struggled with mistakes in set four but countered it with a strong offensive attacked paired with a successful defensive showing. Southwestern posted a hitting percentage of .107, connecting on 16 kills in 56 attempts, but it was the defense that stole the show allowing just eight Warriors kills on 49 attempts for a mark of 6.1 percent. The Lady Builders jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the game before fending off a late Sterling rally that eventually saw the game tied at 21-21. Southwestern tallied four of the final five points scored to take the game 25-22 and even the match at 2-2 heading into the deciding set. In the final game, Sterling jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage before the Southwestern regained control at 4-3. The two teams traded points until they faced a 10-10 with five points left on each side to decide it. From there, the Warriors earned the next two points while preventing the Lady Builders from catching back up. Sterling took the set 15-12 to win the match 3-2. It was a balanced attack for Southwestern, led by Elizabeth Borgelt (FR/Tulsa, Okla.) and Sydney Morris (FR/Garland, Texas), who finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. D’Sani Levy (FR/Enid, Okla.) and Cierra Harrison (FR/Cheney, Kan.) added seven kills apiece. Sophia Wicker (FR/Woodstock, Ill.) helped anchor down the Lady Builders’ defensive efforts, finishing with 33 digs, while Sydney Han- cock (SR/Denver, Colo.) also added 15 digs herself. Hancock posted a team-high 19 assists. With the loss, Southwestern drops to 7-17 overall and 7-10 in the KCAC. The team will have over a week off until their next outing which will be a home triangular on Saturday, March 13th. The team will welcome the McPherson Bulldogs and for a round-robin in Stewart Field House.
