EQUINOR and its partners in the giant Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea have submitted their development plan for the Nkr41 billion ($4.9 billion) second phase to Norwegian authorities, with the operator saying the joint ven- ture now expects to recover 2.7 billion barrels of oil from the whole project. Analysts had previously esti- mated that recovery from Johan Sverdrup was likely to be around 2.5 billion barrels. “We have worked systemati- cally to make the second phase of the Johan Sverdrup development even more profitable and robust,” said Equinor’s executive vice pres- ident for technology, projects and drilling, Margareth Ovrum. Ovrum said that the company is aiming for a recovery rate of more than 70% from the massive field. “Expected recovery from Johan Sverdrup is 2.7 billion barrels of oil. This is actually the first time we have announced the exact fig- ure for expected resources in the field,” she told a press conference during ONS 2018. “The improvements we have seen from this world class project are probably unparalleled in the history of our industry,” an upbeat Equinor chief executive Eldar Sae- tre added. Saetre said Johan Sverdrup is the biggest field development to have emerged on the Norwegian continental shelf since the 1980s. “Since the PDO for the first phase in 2015, we have reduced the total estimated investment for the Johan Sverdrup full field development by more than Nkr80 billion,” he said. “Reserves have increased, capi- tal expenditure is down, value creation has improved, carbon dioxide emissions are expected to be at a record low and the ripple effects are larger than previously estimated,” Saetre added. Ninian FIELD DEVELOPMENT Central restarts THE Ninian Central platform operated by CNR International off the UK has restarted pro- duction after a gas leak halted operations early on Sunday. “Production restarted on the Ninian Central platform... at 10pm [on Sunday],” said a spokesperson for the operator. Production was shut down early on Sunday after the dis- covery of the hydrocarbon release, which the operator said was promptly isolated. All 168 personnel on board were accounted for and nobody was hurt. The size of the leak is not yet known. Upstream understands the gas release occurred in the platform’s modules 6 and 13 but this remains unconfirmed. A spokesperson for the Health & Safety Executive said that inspectors from the safety regulator were aware and were making initial inquiries. There has been a fundamental shift in mentality in the North Sea,” Dickson told Upstream. A further stimulus for new pro- jects is a promising series of dis- coveries so far this year with exploration wells at prospects including OMV’s Iris-Hades and Wintershall’s Balderbraa coming up trumps, as well as successful appraisals such as Lundin’s Rolvsnes disclosed on Monday. “The project hopper is starting to fill up again as these discover- ies can be brought to fruition with shorter lead times, with several factors coming together to address the project gap,” Dickson said. Sinopec COMPANY NEWS profits increase CHINA’S Sinopec posted a rise in profits for the first six months of the year, thanks in part to stronger performance from its upstream business segment. Sinopec posted a profit of 41.6 billion yuan ($6.1 billion) for the six months to 30 June, up from a profit of less than 27.1 billion yuan for the first half of 2017. Total revenue for the first half of 2018 totalled 1.3 trillion yuan, up 11.5% from a year ear- lier, thanks largely to higher oil prices. Sinopec’s upstream segment produced nearly 224.6 million barrels of oil equivalent in the first half of the year, up 1.4% compared to the same period a year ago. This included 143.6 million barrels of oil and 476.2 billion cubic feet of gas. This came as the company also made new oil and gas dis- coveries in the Sichuan, Tarim, and Yin’e basins during the first half of 2018. Sinopec said it planned to develop new fields, resume pro- duction from suspended wells, deepen the structural adjust- ments of mature oilfields, enhance the efficiency and quality of developed gas fields and advance key gas projects.
