International Journal of Political Science ISSN: 2228-6217 Vol.3, No.6, Spring 2013, (pp.51-65) The Political Thought of Darius the Great (522- 486 B.C.), the Legislator of Achaemenid Empire (A Study Based on Achaemenid Inscriptions in Old Persian) Awat Abbasi* Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies Received: 5 Dec 2012 ; Accepted: 11 Feb 2013 Abstract: Darius offered the political order of “king of kings” to solve the political crisis of his era. He legitimized it based on an order of gods. In his belief, the nature of politics was based on a dualis- tic religious worldview that is the fight between true divinity and false divinity’s will and perfor- mance in the world. In addition, the chief true divinity’s law was introduced as the principle order in the world and eternal happiness in true divinity’s house. Therefore, it was considered as the pattern of political order following which was propagandized as the way to reach happiness in this world and salvation in next life. To protect this law, the chief true divinity bestowed the political power to the ruler. Therefore, what should be the political order and who should be the ruler, is justified in the context of the definitions of human, world, happiness and salvation. The sovereignty of the ruler and, therefore, the domination of the chief true divinity’s laws in politics were considered as justice. This definition of justice denied liberty and promoted absolutism. In justifying the ruler’s absolute power, even his laws and commands were considered as the dominant norms over the politics. -

Serie orientale Vol. 57 – Giugno 2021 Notes on Musical Imagery in the Poetry of Jāmi Alessia Dal Bianco Independent Scholar Abstract The poet Nur-al-Din ʿAbd-al-Raḥmān Jāmi (1414-92) is known to have been proficient in music theory; he also wrote a Resāla-ye musiqi (Treatise on Music Theory). In his poems he displayed an extensive and precise use of musical terms. To probe fur- ther into the elements of musical imagery, I scanned through his maṯnavis Haft awrang (The Seven Thrones) in search of lines dedicated to musical modes, instruments, and performers. Considering that musical imagery had a long-established tradition before his time, I pursued a comparative investigation and commented on some lines by way of examples. Finally, I argue that literary conventions shaped Jāmi’s poetry more than his expertise in music theory did. Keywords Nur-al-Din ʿAbd-al-Raḥmān Jāmi. Persian poetry. Resāla-ye musiqi. A TYPOLOGICAL STUDY 1 Eric Spindler2 ABSTRACT: The crown of the divine child was one of the headdresses that transferred from Egypt to the Meroitic Kingdom. It was integrated in the Egyptian decoration program in the early Ptolemaic time. The first king of Meroe to use this crown in the decoration of the Lion Temple in Musawwarat es-Sufra was Arnekhamani (235–218 BCE). It also appeared later in the sanctuaries of his successors Arkamani II (218– 200 BCE) and Adikhalamani (ca. 200–190 BCE) in Dakka and Debod. The Egyptians presented it as the headdress of child gods or the king. In the Kingdom of Meroe the crown was more like a tool to depict the fully legitimised king before he faced the main deity of the sanctuary. To show this the Meroitic artists changed its iconography in such a way that the primarily Egyptian focus on the aspects of youth and rebirth withdrew into the background so that the elements of cosmic, royal and divine legitimacy became the centre of attention. Even if the usage and parts of the iconography were different, the overall meaning remained the same. It was a headdress that combined all elements of the cosmos as well as of royal and divine power. Hafiz (Ḥāfiẓ) (D. Ca. 792/1390)
Hafiz (Ḥāfiẓ) (d. ca. 792/1390) “Every great work of poetry tends to make impossible the production of equally great works of the same kind” (T. S. Eliot) Hafiz was both a great lyric poet, a writer of ghazals (ghazal-sarā), and a man of great spirituality. Hafiz was born in Shiraz some time between 710/1310 and 720/1320, and died ca. 792/1390, so his life spans the 8th/14th century. He wrote a Dīwān of some 500 extraordinary poems over a period of 50 years, some of which were considered by the great Jami as “downright miraculous”. He has been called “the Tongue of the Unseen” (lisān al-ghayb) and “the Interpreter of Secrets” (tarjumān al-asrār). To be educated, in the eyes of a Persian or an Afghan, even today, is to have a copy of Hafiz’s poems on the shelf (and know many of them by heart). As Peter Avery, one of Hafiz’s modern translators (who by his own admission studied Persian in order to be able to read the poems in the original), recalls a visit to Iran: “I asked a slightly, if at all, literate youth whence he came. When he replied ‘Shiraz’, I immediately recited the famous verse “If that Shirazi Turk were to get hold of my heart…”, whereupon he proceeded to recite the rest of the poem. Literate or not, he knew his Hafiz. Imagine giving a London cab driver the first line of a Shakespeare sonnet. It is unlikely that he would reply with the rest of the poem.”1 In other words, Hafiz today in Iran is a living entity, and his poems are often used for bibliomancy, taking an omen (fāl) from the verses where the book falls open, like the Quran or I Ching.
