{ 1 { Observational Astronomy / PHYS-UA 13 / Fall 2013/ Syllabus This course will teach you how to observe the sky with your naked eye, binoculars, and small telescopes. You will learn to recognize astronomical objects in the night sky, orient yourself using the basics of astronomical coordinates, learn the basics of observable lunar and planetary properties. You will be able to understand and predict, using charts and graphs, the changes we see in the night sky. You will learn to understand basic astronomical phenomena that can be observed with basic instrumentation. In addition, this course wishes to provide you with an insight into the scientific method. The instructors is: Dr. Federica Bianco (Meyer 523, [email protected]). Office hours are Tue 930AM (or by appointment). The TA is Nityasri Doddamane ([email protected]) Books The primary textbook is • The Ever-Changing Sky, James Kaler. In addition, we will use the • Edmund Mag 5 Star Atlas • Peterson Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, Jay Pasachoff • the laboratory manual. Each week you will attend one lecture (at 2pm Monday in Meyer 102) and one lab (at 7pm on either Monday or Wednesday in Meyer 224. You cannot switch between the lab sections, because in general they will be on different schedules). Arrive for the lab (on time!) at 7:00pm. The content of the lab will be discussed at the beginning of the lab session. When appropriate, and weather permitting, we will go to the observatory. For the labs: you MUST arrive on time, or else you will not be able to access the observatory. -

Our next meeting will be Saturday, July 19, 2014, 11 AM – 4 PM at LIGO, Livingston. It will be a picnic/star-b-cue and enjoy each other’s company. We will meet under the pavilion by the pond at 11 AM to begin the picnic. BRAS will provide the main course. You can bring a small dish if you wish. At 1 PM, we can join the public for LIGO’s regular Saturday Science day activities. That includes the museum, hands on experiments, a video about LIGO “Einstein’s Messengers”, and a tour of the facility. One new thing we would like to do is set a table aside for anyone who has astronomical equipment they want to sell – telescopes, mounts, accessories, binoculars, cameras, books, etc. The idea is to have an impromptu garage sale (or swap meet). Bring what you have and let’s see if we can move it. LIGO is only open during the day, so the only stargazing we will be able to do will be solar. However, we will demonstrate the 35mm Lundt solar scope BRAS is raffling and sell tickets for the raffle. -

ASTRONOMICAL DELIGHTS If you’re very careful, on December 7 a very old crescent moon will occult Venus in daylight, late morning. You’ll need to look to the west of the sun-don’t catch the sun in your binoculars- around 11:10 or so for the disappearance on the bright side of the moon. Start your search before 11am so you know where Venus and the moon are. Venus will be occulted for about 90 minutes. There’s a really good lunar libration on December 21 at the north Polar region. Good night to poke around the north polar landscape craters that are not normally discernible. -

Please note - this is a work in progress – compiled from several sources - and undoubtedly WILL contain inaccuracies. It would therefor be HIGHLY appreciated if readers would be so kind as to forward ANY corrections and/ or additions (as the document is still obviously incomplete) to: [email protected]. The document will be updated/ revised/ expanded* on a regular basis, replacing the existing document on the ASSA Pretoria website, as well as on the website: coloursofcreation.co.za . This is by no means intended to be a complete nor an exhaustive listing, but rather an “at a glance guide” (2nd column), that will hopefully assist in choosing or eliminating certain objects in a specific constellation for further research, to determine suitability for observation or astrophotography. CONSTELLATION PISCES, the FISHES the Pisces Constellation Lies in the Northern Sky
CONSTELLATION PISCES, THE FISHES The Pisces constellation lies in the northern sky. Its name means “the fish” (plural) in Latin. It is one of the larger constellations in the sky, 14th. It is also one of the zodiac constellations first catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century and lies between the Aries and Aquarius constellations. Its symbol is )-(. In our sky Pisces now rises in the east just above the Great Square of Pegasus. The Vernal (March) equinox, the point at which the Sun moves to the northern hemisphere across the equator every year, is currently located in Pisces, the other intersection of the ecliptic and the celestial equator lies within the constellation Virgo. Pisces constellation also contains a number of interesting deep sky objects, among them the face-on grand design spiral galaxy Messier 74 (NGC 628), the Pisces Dwarf galaxy, the double radio galaxy 3C 31, and the colliding galaxy pair Arp 284. The neighbouring constellations are Andromeda, Aquarius, Aries, Cetus, Pegasus and Triangulum. Pisces has ten stars with known planets. There is one meteor shower associated with the constellation; the Piscids. Pisces belongs to the Zodiac family of constellations, along with Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus and Aquarius. Constellations make a convenient two-dimensional map of the sky used for orientation and to make it easier for astronomers to find objects and explain their location. It must be remembered though, that the universe itself isn’t flat and does not revolve around our planet and these groupings of stars are completely arbitrary. -

Indoor Lab 3 - the Ecliptic
Indoor Lab 3 - The Ecliptic Objectives: To explore the effects of Earths orbital motion on what we see in the sky: the Suns passage through the zodiac, the equinoxes and solstices, and the seasons. 1 The Sun's path around the Zodiac Launch SN and check that it is set up for NY, pointing South. Set the time for March 21 at noon: the Sun will be due South. Switch off the horizon and the daylight so we can see which constellation the Sun is in. It is not so easy to recognize! Switch on View/Constellations/Boundaries and Labels. Of course, its Pisces, one of the Zodiacal con- stellations. During the year the sun passes through all 12 of the Zodiac constellations. To see this, click Find, and double click Sun to lock it in the field of view. Set Options/Orientation/Ecliptic to keep the view aligned with the Sun motion. Then set the time rate appropriately to see the Sun in its journey round the sky. Write down the constellation names in sequence as the Sun passes through. Pisces 2 Ecliptic motion Angular speed. The exact path of the Sun around the Zodiac is the ecliptic. Click View/Ecliptic Guides/The Ecliptic to switch it on. The angular speed of the Sun along the ecliptic is an important number that we can mea- sure directly. Locate the stars (epsilon) Piscium and λ (lambda) Aquarii with the cursor. Both lie close to the ecliptic. Psc is one of the brighter stars associated with the string holding the fish, and λ Aqr lies at the mouth of the watering pot. -

It was great fun, we were able to view a spotless Sun, and we awarded BRAS cofounder Craig Brenden a lifetime membership (see Member’s Corner, Page 8). December 2020: Great Conjunction, Venus with the Scorpion* by Jeffrey L. Hunt Figure 1 - Mars: Watch the Red Planet move eastward through Pisces. Early in the month, it passes through a triangle made by Zeta Piscium (ζ Psc), Epsilon Piscium (ε Psc), and 80 Piscium (80 Psc). At the beginning of morning twilight (5:20 a.m. CST) when December begins, a bright moon outshines the subtle features of the Orion region of the Milky Way. The lunar orb shines from the horns of Taurus. Sirius, Orion, and Taurus are lined up along the western horizon as they appear on a spring evening. The arc of stars – Procyon, Pollux, Castor, and Capella – appear as an umbrella that is higher in the sky. Farther eastward, Regulus and the Sickle of Leo is at the meridian. The Big Dipper is high in the north, nearly the same distance as Leo from the zenith. The dipper’s Pointer Stars reliably aim at the Pole Star. The handle curves toward the east, where topaz Arcturus – over a third of the way up in the sky – is now well-placed for easy reference. Spica is low in the southeast to the lower right of Arcturus. Brilliant Venus is nearby, the lone bright planet in the morning sky. Watch the planet move through Libra and then close to brighter stars in Scorpius during the month. Moving northward along the horizon, you might spot the backwards “C” of Corona Borealis, to the lower left of Arcturus. Vega is low in the northeast. Cassiopeia is low in the north, west of the meridian.
