Domenici Science Operations Center, 1003 Lopezville Road, Socorro, New Mexico 87801, USA The close binary Algol contains a radio-bright K subgiant star in a very close (0.062 AU), rapid (2.86 day) orbit with a main sequence B8 star. Since the rotation periods of the two stars are tidally locked to the orbital period, the consequent rapid rotation drives a robust magnetic dynamo. A large body of evidence points to the existence of an extended, complex coronal magnetosphere originating at the cooler K subgiant1–4. The detailed morphology of the subgiant’s corona and its possible interaction with its companion are unknown, though theory predicts that the coronal plasma should be confined in magnetic loop structure5, as seen on the Sun. Here we report multi-epoch radio imaging of the Algol system, in which we see a large, persistent coronal loop approximately one subgiant diameter in height, whose base is straddling the subgiant and whose apex is oriented toward the B star. This strongly suggests that a persistent asymmetric magnetic field structure is aligned between the two stars. The loop is larger than anticipated theoretically6, 7, but the size may be a result of a magnetic interaction between the two stars. 1 We made six twelve-hour observations of Algol during a period from 6 April to 17 August 2008 with the High Sensitivity Array (HSA), a global very long baseline interferometer array. -

Guide to the Extended Versions of MPC Data Files Based on the MPCORB Format Last updated: 2016/04/19 by J.L. Galache Introduction The Minor Planet Center (MPC) has been providing the orbits of minor planets in the form of a file, MPCORB.DAT, since the mid '90s (1990s, not 1890s). Back then there were only a few thousand known asteroids, compared to the several hundred thousand of today, so a flat text file was the appropriate way to circulate these data. It was also a time when most orbit computations were programmed in Fortran, which ingested data no other way. MPCORB.DAT has therefore always been, and continues to be, a fixed-width file (see Table 1 for the current format description1). In fact, all original data files available on the MPC website are flat text files (even the orbits files provided for planetarium-type/sky simulation software packages are simply text files of varying format2). In the early years of the 2010s, possibly due to the rising popularity of the scripting language Python amongst astronomers, and an increased interest from developers wanting to write asteroid-themed tools, requests were received to provide data in other, easier to parse formats, e.g., JSON, CSV, SQL, etc. At the same time, astronomers and developers alike wanted more information than was currently been provided in MPCORB.DAT; information that did exist on the MPC website in other, often hard to find, files. Here was an opportunity to add some new data to existing files, while also making them available in other formats. -

2015 Clear Sky Nights by Art Rae Volume 41, No. 4 Windsor Centre - Here is my tally of clear night skies for 2015 from my location near River Canard, Ontario. This is an unofficial "look out the window" count of all the nights I saw what I considered a "clear sky". Seeing doesn't enter into it. But it gives an idea of what kind of observing year we had this past year. 2015 brought my total up to 93 clear nights, about 25% of the total nightly skies for the year. If you thought we didn't get a lot of clear skies you are probably right. In some recent years we've experi- enced as high as 120 clear nights others as low as 83. 2013 showed 119 open sky nights. Well maybe we will have a better chance in 2016. This year we get an ex- tra day to count. Its phase curve is well-matched by a slope parameter G = 0.25 ±0.01 The 2009 October-November apparition of asteroid 1130 Skuld presented an excellent opportunity to measure its phase curve to very small solar phase angles. I devoted 13 nights over a two- month period to gathering photometric data on the object, over which time the solar phase angle ranged from α = 0.3 deg to α = 17.6 deg. All observations used Altimira Observatory’s 0.28-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (SCT) working at f/6.3, SBIG ST- 8XE NABG CCD camera, and photometric V- and R-band filters. Exposure durations were 3 or 4 minutes with the SNR > 100 in all images, which were reduced with flat and dark frames.
