Colleagues, Public Star Party follows at the I hope you found the third week of July exhilarating. The 50th Anniversary of the first Centennial Observatory moon landing was the common theme. I capped my observance by watching the C- SPAN replay of the CBS broadcast. It was not only exciting to watch the landing, but Club Officers to listen to Walter Cronkite and Wally Schirra discuss what Neil Armstrong and Buzz Robert Mayer, President Aldrin was relaying back to us. It was fascinating to hear what we have either accepted or rejected for years come across as something brand new. Hearing [email protected] Michael Collins break in from his orbit above in the command module also reminded me of the major role he played and yet others in the past have often overlooked – Gary Leavitt, Vice President fortunately, he is now receiving the respect he deserves. If you didn’t catch that, [email protected] then hopefully you caught some other commemoration, such as Turner Classic Movies showing For All Mankind, a spellbinding documentary of what it was like for Dr. Jay Hartwell, Secretary all of the Apollo astronauts who made it to the moon. Jim Tubbs, Treasurer / ALCOR For me, these moments of commemoration made reading the moon landing’s [email protected] anniversary issue from the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) 208-404-2999 come to life as they wrote about the features these astronauts were examining – including the little craters named after the three astronauts. -

Public Star Party Follows at the Colleagues, Centennial Observatory Club Officers It's that time of year: The City of Rocks Star Party. Set for Friday, Aug. 5th, and Saturday, Aug. 6th, the event is the gem of the MVAS year. As we've done every Robert Mayer, President year, we will hold solar viewing at the Smoky Mountain Campground, followed by a [email protected] potluck there at the campground. Again, MVAS will provide the main course and 208-312-1203 beverages. Paul McClain, Vice President After the potluck, the party moves over to the corral by the bunkhouse over at [email protected] Castle Rocks, with deep sky viewing beginning sometime after 9 p.m. This is a chance to dig into some of the darkest skies in the west. This has been the Year of the Baryon. Some low temperature ones were seen at high redshift, some high temperature ones were seen at low redshift, and some cooling ones were (probably) reheated. Astronomers saw the back of the Sun (which is also made of baryons), a possible solution to the problem of ejection of material by Type II supernovae (in which neutrinos push out baryons), the production of R Coronae Borealis stars (previously-owned baryons), and perhaps found the missing satellite galaxies (whose failing is that they have no baryons). A few questions were left unanswered for next year, and an attempt is made to discuss these as well. -

We had a good time, and About 100 people (adult and children) attended. Ben Toman live streamed on the BRAS Facebook page. See his description in this newsletter. A copy of the proposed, revised By-Laws should be in your mail soon. Read through them, and any proposed changes need to be communicated to me before the November meeting. Wally Pursell (who wrote the original and changed by-laws) and I worked last year on getting the By-Laws updated to the current BRAS policies, and we hope the revised By-Laws will need no revisions for a long time. We need more Globe at Night observations – we are behind in the observations compared to last year at this time. We also need observations of variable stars to help in a school project by a new BRAS member, Shreya. -

(2) (1) (1) (2) Ray (2) 1/2° Ray (1) 8.218" (2) 8.016" (1) 8.0" Secondary 8.0" Mirror Focal Plane Secondary Primary Baffle Tube Baffle Field Stops Correcting Primary Mirror Plate The Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain Optical System (Diagram not to scale) In the Schmidt-Cassegrain design of the Meade 8", 10", and 12" models, light enters from the right, passes through a thin lens with 2-sided aspheric correction (“correcting plate”), proceeds to a spherical primary mirror, and then to a convex aspheric secondary mirror. The convex secondary mirror multiplies the effective focal length of the primary mirror and results in a focus at the focal plane, with light passing through a central perforation in the primary mirror. The 8", 10", and 12" models include oversize 8.25", 10.375" and 12.375" primary mirrors, respectively, yielding fully illuminated fields- of-view significantly wider than is possible with standard-size primary mirrors. Note that light ray (2) in the figure would be lost entirely, except for the oversize primary. It is this phenomenon which results in Meade 8", 10", and 12" Schmidt-Cassegrains having off-axis field illuminations 10% greater, aperture-for-aperture, than other Schmidt-Cassegrains utilizing standard-size primary mirrors. The optical design of the 4" Model 2045D is almost identical but does not include an oversize primary, since the effect in this case is small. -

2015 Clear Sky Nights by Art Rae Volume 41, No. 4 Windsor Centre - Here is my tally of clear night skies for 2015 from my location near River Canard, Ontario. This is an unofficial "look out the window" count of all the nights I saw what I considered a "clear sky". Seeing doesn't enter into it. But it gives an idea of what kind of observing year we had this past year. 2015 brought my total up to 93 clear nights, about 25% of the total nightly skies for the year. If you thought we didn't get a lot of clear skies you are probably right. In some recent years we've experi- enced as high as 120 clear nights others as low as 83. 2013 showed 119 open sky nights. Well maybe we will have a better chance in 2016. This year we get an ex- tra day to count.
