WING-FOLDING MECHANISM OF THE GRUMMAN WILDCAT An American Society of Mechanical Engineers Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark DESIGNATION CEREMONY AT THE KALAMAZOO AVIATION HISTORY MUSEUM KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN May 15, 2006 A Mechanical Engineering Landmark The innovative wing folding mechanism (STO-Wing), developed by Leroy Grumman in early 1941 and first applied to the XF4F-4 Wildcat, manufactured by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, is designated an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. (See Plaque text on page 6) Grumman People Three friends were the principal founders of the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation (Now known as Northrop Grumman Corporation), in January 1930, in a garage in Baldwin, Long Island, New York. (See photo of Leon Swirbul, William Schwendler, and Leroy Grumman on page 7) Leroy Randle (Roy) Grumman (1895-1982) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1916. He then joined the U. S. Navy and earned his pilot’s license in 1918. He was later the Managing Director of Loening Engineering Corporation, but when Loening merged with Keystone Aircraft Corporation, he and two of his friends left Loening and started their own firm — Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. William T. Schwendler (1904-1978) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from New York University in 1924. He was reluctant to leave Long Island, so he chose to join Grumman and Swirbul in forming the new company. Leon A. (Jake) Swirbul (1898-1960) studied two years at Cornell University but then left to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Instrumental in the founding and early growth of Grumman, he soon became its president. -

Ein einmotoriger Tiefdecker wurde entworfen und gebaut, um einen Auftrag der United States Navy für einen fortschrittlichen Trägerjäger zu erfüllen. Es zeigte eine schlechte Flugleistung und wurde von der Navy zurückgewiesen, wobei der einzelne Prototyp bei einem Unfall verloren ging. These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. 10/27/2020 Vought - Wikipedia Vought Vought was the name of several related American aerospace firms. These have included, in the past, Lewis and Vought Corporation, Chance Vought, Vought Vought-Sikorsky, LTV Aerospace (part of Ling-Temco-Vought), Vought Aircraft Companies, and Vought Aircraft Industries. The first incarnation of Vought was established by Chance M. Vought and Birdseye Lewis in 1917. In 1928, it was acquired by United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, which a few years later became United Aircraft Corporation; this was the first of many reorganizations and buyouts. During the 1920s and 1930s, Vought Aircraft and Chance Vought specialized in carrier-based aircraft for the United States Navy, by far its biggest customer. Chance Vought produced thousands of planes during World War II, including the F4U Corsair. Vought became independent again in 1954, and was purchased by Ling- Temco-Vought (LTV) in 1961. The company designed and produced a variety of The VE-7 was the first aircraft to planes and missiles throughout the Cold War. Vought was sold from LTV and owned launch from a U.S. Navy aircraft in various degrees by the Carlyle Group and Northrop Grumman in the early 1990s. It carrier was then fully bought by Carlyle, renamed Vought Aircraft Industries, with Industry Aerospace headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Eckland, via Aerofiles.com) The XFH-1 was a single seat fighter with a watertight fuselage and of aluminium construction. A single aircraft was ordered with serial A-8009 and flew for the first time in June 1929. PH Hall Specifications: span: 72'10", 22.20 m length: 51'10", 15.80 m engines: 2 Wright GR-1750 max. speed: 124 mph, 200 km/h (Source: Ron Dupas, via 1000aircraftphotos.com photo #3219) The PH flying boat was based on the PN-11 design but was built of aluminium. A single XPH-1 was ordered on 27 December 1927 with serial A-8004. The first flight was in December 1929. This was followed by an order of 9 PH-1s on 10 June 1930 with serials A-8687/8695. These aircraft were fitted with Wright R-1820-86 engines and the first flight was on 19 October 1931. The PH-2 version was ordered by the USCG in June 1936 with serials V164/170. These aircraft had a length of 51', 15.54 m and were fitted with R-1820-F51 engines. The final version, identical to the PH-2, was the PH-3 of which 7 were procured by the USCG with serials V177/183. The PH-3 incorporated several design improvements including a new cockpit fairing. -

Currently serves on the Board of Vought Heritage Foundation as Financial Manager. She is active as an AARP Tax Counselor for Senior Citizens and Office Manager of a Family church camp. Vought was the engineering and management expert while Birdseye B. Lewis contributed to the financing of the venture. Lewis died in France in mid-1917 as a member of the Army Air Service and Vought went on to build the company. Vought remained the Consulting Engineer and Chairman of the Board until 1922, when the company was succeeded by the one bearing his name. He was President, Chief Engineer and the key marketer. -

Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time. -

FRUIT SALE Lt Drost conducted a character development seminar with the theme "Anybody can be a Hero." The sales phase of the Squadron's annual citrus fruit fund raiser has attended. This year's effort is C/CMSgt presented a paper on the relationship average compared to the eight previous years. among leaders and followers. Some 275 cases were sold with Seniors contributing about 70% of the total. The top five Cadet Burns was promoted to cadet airman.
