Der Himmel lädt ein zum Verweilen im Freien - Picknick, Parkfest, Bratwurstbuden. Im Herzen der Hauptstadt am Gendar- menmarkt sind die Cafés überfüllt und verklärte Gesichter der Sonne zugeneigt. Nebenan im Konzerthaus Dfeiert das Jazzlabel ACT sein 25-jähriges Jubiläum - von 14.00 Uhr bis spät in den Abend. Young German Jazz, Tears for Esbjörn, The Act Family Band stehen auf dem Programm – und Youn Sun Nah & Ulf Wakenius. Angesichts der Vielzahl beglückter Sonnenanbeter mögen Skeptiker spontane Planungsänderung prognostizieren bei all denjenigen Jazzfans, die einem Latte Macchiato im Freien womöglich den Vorzug geben vor Jubiläumskonzerten im dunklen Inneren des Großen Saals. Der Platz im Rang gewährt einen Überblick über den Besucherzustrom und lässt Skeptiker-Prognosen schnell ins Wanken geraten. Zu Beginn des Youn-Sun Nah-Konzertes um 16.30 Uhr haben 1600 Besucher den Saal bis auf den letzten Platz besetzt und erwartungsvoll dem Latte Macchiato im Freien entsagt. Youn Sun Nah betritt fast zaghaft die Bühne, lächelt bescheiden dem Applaus entgegen, verneigt sich, begrüßt mit sehr feiner, leiser Stimme das Publikum. Von ihr geht Zurückhaltung aus und Höflichkeit und eine einnehmende Art der Schüchternheit, und wer es nicht schon besser weiß, wird in diesem Moment wohl kaum erahnen, welch enormes Stimmvolumen sich hinter dieser zarten Erscheinung verbirgt. Der späte Weg zum Jazz „Ich bin erst mit 25 Jahren zum Jazz gekommen“, erzählt Youn Sun Nah mir am nächsten Tag. „Vorher hatte ich keine Ahnung, was Jazz wirklich war“ - und das aus dem Mund einer Jazzmusikerin, die heute als „Ausnahmetalent“, als „Wun- der“ gefeiert wird, wie eine große deutsche Zeitung jüngst befand – was wiederum durchaus kein Wunder ist! Damals, vor gut 20 Jahren, habe sie jedoch nur eines gewusst: Musik machen zu wollen. Zu alt für Klassik, zu dies für Rock, zu das für HipHop, habe ein Freund ihr geraten: „Do Jazz!“. Also ist sie nach Paris gegangen, um an einer der ältesten Jazz- schulen Europas, dem CIM (Centre d’Informations Musicales), Jazz und Chanson zu studieren. Existing interpretations of both works are problematic because they see the depictions of women in the paintings as representative of Korean women in 1940s. By investigating the Pacific War time gender hegemonies, like the “Wise Mother, Good Wife” rhetoric that opposed that of the “New Woman,” and exploring Japanese Imperial Orientalism towards Korea, this study will provide an alternative reading of Yi’s two Female Figure Paintings.

Korea to c. 1400 The dawn of history Archaeological, linguistic, and legendary sources support the view that the Korean peninsula was settled by Tungusic- speaking peoples who migrated in waves from Manchuria and Siberia. They settled along the coasts and moved up the river valleys. These peoples formed the dominant ethnic foundation of the Korean people and developed the Korean language. There was a close relationship between Korean culture and that of neighbouring peoples during the Neolithic Period (New Stone Age) and the Bronze Age. For example, Korean comb pottery, widely used in the Neolithic Period, is commonly found in northeastern Asia; Korean bronze daggers, belt hooks, and knobbed mirrors also display the traits of bronze tools unearthed elsewhere in the region. THE STONE AGE Stone artifacts of the Paleolithic Period have been unearthed at Kulp’o-ri in North Hamgyŏng province (North Korea) and at Sŏkch’ang in South Ch’ungch’ŏng province (South Korea). Of 13 stratified Paleolithic sites, each cultural stratum produced chipped-stone tools of different shapes.     DEMOCRACY AS THE LEGITIMATE “FORM” AND “CONTENT”: MINJUNG MISUL IN DISSIDENT NATIONALISM OF SOUTH KOREA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Hyejong Yoo May 2011 © 2011 Hyejong Yoo DEMOCRACY AS THE LEGITIMATE “FORM” AND “CONTENT”: MINJUNG MISUL IN DISSIDENT NATIONALISM OF SOUTH KOREA Hyejong Yoo, Ph.D. Cornell University 2011 This study delineates minjung misul’s (“the people’s art”) sotong (“dialogue”) in re- envisioning Koreans’ modernism and nation-state during the 1980s’ democratization movement of South Korea. Aligned with the postcolonial dissident movement and the democratization movement, the minjung artists’ multilayered dialogue with the sociopolitical, economic, cultural-intellectual, and spiritual realms articulated the artists’ underlying operational logic and aspirations—the creation of a legitimate Korean modernism and modernity—in the form of dissident nationalism. In contrast to the state’s ethnic nationalism, dissident nationalism, which inherited the Korean desire for democracy from the nationalist movement, engaged in political and aesthetic- ethical contemplations of democracy. With democracy as their central principle, the minjung artists radically reexamined and reconceptualized democracy and other “familiar” yet ambiguous and multi-layered notions/discourses in their reworking of Korean modernism and everyday/national community. In exploring the minjung artists’ aesthetic, discursive, and activist endeavors, I demonstrate that the minjung artists attempted to create a competing model of modernism and modernity that would have moral legitimacy over the existing Western and Korean modernisms and modernities. I explore how their structural critique of art ideology and of the art establishment developed into a reenvisioning of everyday community and of the democratization of the Korean nation-state.
