Paramount Collection Airtight To control the air is to rule the world. Nuclear testing has fractured the Earth's crust, releasing poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Breathable air is now an expensive and rare commodity. A few cities have survived by constructing colossal air stacks which reach through the toxic layer to the remaining pocket of precious air above. The air is pumped into a huge underground labyrinth system, where a series of pipes to the surface feed the neighborhoods of the sealed city. It is the Air Force, known as the "tunnel hunters", that polices the system. Professor Randolph Escher has made a breakthrough in a top-secret project, the extraction of oxygen from salt water in quantity enough to return breathable air to the world. Escher is kidnapped by business tycoon Ed Conrad, who hopes to monopolize the secret process and make a fortune selling the air by subscription to the masses. Because Conrad Industries controls the air stacks, not subscribing to his "air service" would mean certain death. When Air Force Team Leader Flyer Lucci is murdered, his son Rat Lucci soon uncovers Conrad's involvement in his father's death and in Escher's kidnapping. Rat must go after Conrad, not only to avenge his father's murder, but to rescue Escher and his secret process as well. The loyalties of Rat's Air Force colleagues are questionable, but Rat has no choice. Alone, if necessary, he must fight for humanity's right to breathe. • Lost Spoiler Practices: Online Interaction As Social Participation
. Volume 11, Issue 2 November 2014 Lost spoiler practices: Online interaction as social participation Ödül Gürsimsek and Kirsten Drotner Institute for the Study of CultureMedia Studies, University of Southern Denmark Abstract: The American television network ABC’s serialized drama Lost (2004-10) is a key example of recent media culture where both viewers and producers utilize a range of digital media tools to advance the narrative: producers through transmedia storytelling strategies and the creation of complex narratives, and viewers through tracing, dismantling – and sometimes questioning – content in order to create coherent meanings in the maze of narratives. Online audiences, such as spoiler communities, may uncover components of transmedia storytelling, discuss their validity and enhance them with individual and collective content production, thus negotiating purposes and interpretive practices with producers and amongst themselves. Through critical discourse analysis of key instances where the Lost community collaborates over resources beyond the official Lost transmedia narratives, this article argues and documents that interactions between Lost audiences and producers operate as forms of social participation when spoiler-seeking audiences work to unravel, challenge and predict the narrative while the producers seek to orchestrate transmedia storytelling experiences. Our results serve as a sobering empirical critique of the more celebratory claims made about the emancipatory potentials of participatory online practices. Keywords:

  • Years & Counting
YEARS & 10 COUNTING he terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan provided a potent backdrop for the formation of the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council (USAWC). The Tplight of Afghan women and girls captured the hearts of the American people. The counterpoint of their oppression, the horrific attack on innocent citizens in the United States, underscored their brutal oppression. The American public was outraged, particularly American women. First Lady Laura Bush captured these sentiments in her historic radio address on November 17, 2001. Americans wanted to respond. Harnessing the empathy, compassion, and energy of these individuals was to become the impetus for forming the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council—a mechanism to direct public and private resources to help Afghan women re-establish their rightful place in society and contribute to the rebuilding of Afghanistan. The stars were aligned. Influential leaders both in the White House and State Department began developing the idea of a private-public partnership to address the future of women in Afghanistan; they were inspired by the determination of several remarkable women in the private sector who were prepared to develop and fund new initiatives. The idea of a Council that would gather ideas and talent, channeling them into a private-public response, emerged in partnership with the Afghan government and the enthusiastic support of the President and the First Lady. On January 28, 2002, President George W. Bush and Afghan Interim Authority Chairman

Noriega, Chair Latinas’ marginalization within the film industry has been reproduced in the writing of film history as a result of many factors, including (but not limited to) male-centered notions of history and dominant models of authorship that center the director as the principle creative force behind the filmmaking process. Motivated by a commitment to securing Latina filmmakers’ place in film history, this study of U.S.-based Latina producers of Latina/o-themed feature films proposes a “synergistic” model of authorship that makes visible creative contributions of authors who do not occupy designated roles such as “director” or (less so) “writer,” traditionally associated with authorship. Instead, it acknowledges the way numerous creative, institutional, historical, sociological, and economic forces come together to shape a film. ii This dissertation involves

  • Genre, Auteur and Identity in Contemporary Hollywood Cinema: Clint Eastwood’S White Hunter, Black Heart1
GENRE, AUTEUR AND IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY HOLLYWOOD CINEMA: CLINT EASTWOOD’S WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART1 LUIS MIGUEL GARCÍA MAINAR University of Zaragoza 21 In keeping with contemporary enthusiasm for popular culture products, recent US American film criticism has shown great interest in the study of clearly codified artistic forms, with special emphasis on generic conventions and their attendant ideologies. This interest seems to be based on a distinction between generic and personal films, the assumption being that the former are more appropriate objects of study because they show a consistency and predictability that the latter lack. Critical interest does not, however, run parallel with Hollywood’s production, and the truth is that genre pieces do still coexist with a considerable number of more personal films, which show a relatively more realistic approach and pay more attention than the average Hollywood narrative to the construction of their characters. These films, presumably targeted at more mature audiences than the generic majority, seem to join forces with the independent cinema of the 80s and 90s, which has often exhibited a return to well-crafted stories and characters typical of classical cinema. In this paper I would like to concentrate on the study of Clint Eastwood’s White Hunter, Black Heart (1990) as a film with an interest in portraying the experience of the “self” through textual forms that fall outside Hollywood’s generic codes. The mention of Clint Eastwood already indicates the relevance of his presence, both as actor and director, to the understanding of the film, illustrating the persistence of forms of auteurism in contemporary Hollywood.
