[email protected] The 2010 Season OUTLOOK The 2010 Hokies return a wealth of experience from last year’s history-making team and will look to keep the program’s success going as they return the majority of their starters from last season. The well-balanced squad will see a senior captain in three of the four positional areas of the field and will look to those players to help replace the important and influential leadership that was lost in the off-season. Tech will face one of its most difficult non-conference schedules this year, while play in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference will not be far behind. Kelsey Billups

“We are very excited to begin our 2010 season,” said head coach Kelly Cagle. “While we will miss the contributions of our outstanding graduating class from 2009, we are confident in our current leadership and in our returning group. These players have seen what it takes to get to the postseason now for two consecutive years, and we are looking to those experiences to help us get back to the NCAA tournament again. We welcome our newcomers and we will look for their impact to be immediate, as we will need their contributions to face the challenging schedule that lies ahead.” FORWARDS The forward position is where the Hokies lost who saw limited playing time in her first active only goal of the game to top then-No. 1 North the most depth in the off-season. Boone also captained the East Chapel Hill team for two of her four- Kelly Lynch years and was named an All-American after her final season. MIDFIELDERS The midfield returns the most experience and is the team’s deepest position in terms of talent. Senior leader Jennifer Harvey has been the stronghold for Tech in the middle of the field for the past two seasons and she took her offensive game one step further last season, tallying nine goals and going 5-for-5 on penalty kicks. Fellow classmate and captain Kelsey Billups, who has been a real utility player for Tech and has contributed from nearly every position, will also look to command the field as a true offensive and defensive threat in the middle of the field. Sophomore Kelly Conheeney had a breakout season as a freshman in 2009, and she returns to pick up right where she left off. Conheeney finished her first season with nine goals, four game-winners and numerous postseason accolades. The young player provides a strong offensive threat from the midfield with great field presence and play-making ability. Junior Brittany Popko will also return to a starting role in the midfield for the 2010 season,

38 - Virginia Tech 2010 Women’s Soccer www.hokiesports.com - PB BLACKSBURG, VA. One of America’s best college towns, Blacksburg is a perfect setting for a great university like Virginia Tech. Located in Southwest Virginia on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains, Blacksburg combines the laid-back lifestyle of a small town with the amenities one would expect to find around a major center of higher education. Together, the town and university have worked hard to create a progressive community that ranks among the nation’s elite living environments. Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg gained national and international attention by creating the world’s first “electronic village.” Businesses and industries have been drawn by the potential of the quaint town. Established in 1798 by John and William Black, the town is surrounded by scenic mountain views that accentuate the area. Since its founding, Blacksburg has grown to become the largest town in Virginia. The over 43,000 residents (including students) enjoy a close proximity to a variety of recreation areas such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, Claytor Lake and the New River. The region features a moderate climate and four distinct seasons. Blacksburg’s location (adjacent to major interstate highways) provides convenient access to most points in the southern and eastern parts of the country. More information on Blacksburg can be found on the web site of the Blacksburg Electronic Village, www.bev.net or the town’s web site, www.blacksburg.va.us. 2010 Schedule James Madison 17 Sep Virginia * Sep 23 at Elon at North Carolina * 20 Sep 26 Aug American 3 Maryland * 23 Oct at Boston College * Aug 10 Oct Wake Forest * 14 Aggieland Invitationalat Texas A&M Tournament Oct Duke * 27 17 Aug vs. Long Beach State Oct at Miami * 29 21 Aug Oct at Florida State * 24 Oct at Clemson * ACC/SEC Challengevs. Kentucky 28 3 Oct NC State * Sep vs. LSU 31 Sep 5 Oct ACC Championship Nov 3-7 Hilton GardenVillanova Hokie Invitational 10 Sep Vanderbilt Sep 12
