Lawrence Tanter ABOUT THE NBA D-LEAGUE & LOS ANGELES D-FENDERS Now entering its 11th season, the NBA Development League - the NBA's minor league established to develop talent across all disciplines for the NBA - is designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally by offering NBA-quality basketball and fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. In July 2006, the Los Angeles Lakers became the first NBA franchise to own its own NBA Development League team. Starting in the 2006-07 season, the Los Angeles D-Fenders franchise began playing its home games either prior to or following Lakers home games at STAPLES Center and later added home games to the schedule at the Lakers practice facility, Toyota Sports Center. On three separate occasions during the D-Fenders inaugural season, the Lakers utilized the minor league affiliate by assigning rookie guard Jordan Farmar to the team and recalling him following each game. What’s further, the Lakers made history on April 1, 2007 when Farmar became the first player in league history to play in an NBA and NBA D-League game in the same day. In 2007-08, Coby Karl scored five points for the Lakers February 19 versus Atlanta, becoming the 2nd player in league history to play in same-day D-League and NBA games. In 2008-09, rookie guard Sun Yue became the third Lakers player to play for the D-Fenders. With no D- League assignments in 2009-10 and a one year hiatus from the D-League in 2010-11, the D-Fenders will return to competition this season with all home games being played at Toyota Sports Center. The D-League's assignment system with the NBA will enter its seventh season in 2011-12. In all, the league will once again feature 16 teams and now has nine teams with single affiliations with NBA teams. A proven developer of talent, 23 percent of players in the NBA at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season boasted NBA D-League experience, while the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front office staff for the NBA and its teams. During a 2010-11 season that saw league-wide attend- ance total 1,125,583 fans, a 7.9% increase from the previous year, 25 NBA teams assigned 37 first- and second-year players to develop with their NBA D-League affili- ates. Of those 37 players, 18 were 2009 or 2010 first-round NBA Draft picks (six lottery picks) while 45% of the players selected in the 2010 NBA Draft played in the NBA D-League last season. 4 OWNER/GOVERNOR DR. JERRY BUSS In 1979, Jerry Buss ushered in an era of success unrivaled in the history of Southern California profes- sional sports when he acquired the Los Angeles Lakers. In what was at the time the largest ever sports transaction, Buss purchased the Lakers, the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, The Great Western Fo- rum and a 13,000-acre Kern County ranch in June of that year. Some 27 years later, Buss became the first NBA owner to own and operate an NBA Development League team, starting the Los Angeles D- Fenders franchise in 2006. Now embarking upon his 5th season at the helm of the D-Fenders, Buss will continue to use his D-League entity to help develop NBA talent for the Lakers while building a competitive team that has already enjoyed the success of a playoff berth in just its second year of exist- ence. A graduate of the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Buss earned his Ph. D in Physical Chemistry from the University of Southern California. After a brief career in aerospace, Buss and Frank Mariani, an aerospace engineer, drew upon their scientific training to launch a career in real estate. For Buss, the venture was intended only to provide income which would enable him to pursue his love for teaching. Soon, however, the real estate firm of Mariani-Buss Associates was expanding so fast that its demands would not allow time for other professions. Ultimately, Buss was able to parlay his original $1,000 investment in a West Los Angeles apartment building into assets that eventu- ally enabled to him to achieve his second love, ownership of a major league sports team. Since his entry into the NBA, Buss has initiated many innovative marketing changes including a major advertising agreement with Great Western Bank in 1988 that resulted in the Lakers’ former home being named the Great Western Forum. As a result, many of his marketing strategies are emulated today by franchises across each of the major North American professional sporting leagues. In addition to his role with the Lakers, Buss has served two terms as President of the NBA Board of Governors.
