SENIOR LEADERSHIP & TEAM CHEMISTRY KEYS FOR TORERO SUCCESS IN 1999 !

Seamus McFadden, who enters his 21st season directing the fortunes of the University of San Diego men's soccer program, returns thirteen players and seven starters from last year's squad that shared the West Coast Conference title with Gonzaga and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite losing the WCC Offensive Player of the Year in Leighton O'Brien, and the WCC scoring leader in Devin Ebright, the Toreros feel they have a solid nucleus of returners and quality class of newcomers that will again gun for the WCC title. Coach McFadden, who earned his fifth WCC Coach of the Year honor in 1998, will have the luxury of six seniors in his starting line-up to provide leader ship to the newcomers and give the Toreros a solid chemistry on the field. Three of the seniors were starters a year ago -- midfielders Brian O'Connor (2nd Team All-WCC) and Antonio Gonzales (game-winner vs. CS Fullerton in 1st round of NCAA's), and defender Erin O'Connor, a solid performer in the back. Two 0 forwards back that missed last season with injuries - Mike Marvil and Levi Parker, will be counted on for offense. Senior newcomer Matt Hall, a transfer from San Diego State where he was a two-year team captain, is the projected starter in goal for the Toreros -- from nearby Vista, he's played club soccer over the years with the O'Connor brothers. Additional starters back include junior Miguel Suazo, 20 starts at midfield; sophomore defender Eric Van Demeo, a 1998 2nd Team All-WCC pick who started 21 matches; and sophomore midfielder Mike Piserchio, the team's top returning scorer with 11 points (2 goals, 7 assists). Justin Neerhof, a sophomore keeper who earned 10 starts (7-3 record) over the second half of last season, will compete for playing time with Hall. Torero returners that will be pushing for playing time include junior forward Joel Armstong, junior defender Paul Fisher, sophomore midfielder Duncan Woods and sophomore defender Tim Petrovic.

Coach McFadden likes what he sees in his newcomers. A trio of sophomores have transferred in that will compete for playing time -- midfielder Norman Gireaux earned Division I playing experience at UC Irvine; forward Tyler Conley comes to USO from Rhode Island; and midfielder/forward Ryan Coiner started at Saddleback Community College. USD's freshman class includes forward Sy Reeves, de fender Garrett Turk, defender Aaron Tubbs, defender Alex Romagnolo and keeper Bradford Duttera. The Toreros hope to take advantage of opening the season with six home matches before they head on the road to two tournaments that will pit them against Notre Dame, Cal Berkeley, Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. They open up WCC play at home on October 8th with San Francisco, followed by three very tough WCC road contests at Santa Clara, Gonzaga and Portland. USO will then finish out the regular season slate with three Final 1998 West Coast Conference Standings home matches against Team WCC Overall UC San Diego, LMU San Diego#* 5-1-0 12-9-0 and Saint Mary's. Gonzaga# 5-1-0 12-4-0 If USO can stay Santa Clara* 3-2-1 15-5-2 5-14-1 healthy in 1999, they San Francisco 2-3-1 Portland 2-3-1 10-5-3 have the makings of a Loyola Marymount 1-4-1 5-12-1 team that will gun for Saint Mary's 1-5-0 6-14-0 their 7th trip to the NCAA's in the '90's. # Co-WCC Champs ..... *NCAA participant USD In The 1990 's --A Decade of Torero Excellence 2

HEAD COACH SEAMUS McFADDEN - 21st YEAR

With the recent success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last few years - six NCAA Tournament appearances in nine seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Confer ence Coach of the Year a record five times ('98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won three WCC championships; has coached four WCC Defensive Players of the Year, four WCC Offensive Players of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the Year. McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become ------a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 SEAMUS games. The 1990 squad, led by the first McFADDEN of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire sea 21st Year son and advanced to the NCAA Sec McFadden At USD ond Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writ- ing on the wall many years earlier, when / Year Overall wee NCAA 1998 12-9-0 5-1-0 2nd Rd the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 1997 11-7-1 3-3-0 record over two seasons while at the 1996 I 0-3-5 3-2-1 same time guiding Clairemont High to 1995 12-5-2 5-1-0 1st Rd consecutive CIF-San Diego Section 1994 13-6-0 4-2-0 1st Rd titles and the La Jolla Cup. 1993 l 4- 7-0 4-2-0 2nd Rd The whole puzzle came together in 1992 19-5-0 4-1-0 Final 1992 when McFadden had in place sev 1991 7-12-0 1-4-0 eral of San Diego's best local talent. 1990 16-3-5 2-2-1 2nd Rd Student-athletes, who in the past had 1989 14-6-1 2-3-0 looked outside the city to showcase their 1988 I 0-8-2 1-3-1 1987 12-7-2 talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Seamus McFadden 1986 19-4-1 Park. The 1992 Toreros showed re- 5-time WCC Coach of the Year 1985 7-11-2 markable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to 1984 4-12-4 the NCAA Championship Game. 1983 1-14-0 The 47-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big 1982 3-15-1 games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked 1981 5-12-1 away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USO 1980 0-12-0 shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television Tot. 189-158-27; 34-24-3 wee audience. Last season USO upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round ac tion. USO can boast of a .600 winning percentage in ;!, ~;_, NCAA games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son McFadden addresses media after NCAA ]st Rd. win (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos. Torero Assistant Coaching Staff 4
