Macau International Airport (MIA) opened just over 19 years ago and has been dealing with an incredibly rapid growth in passenger volume. According to industry publication Airport Business, “MIA forecasted a total passenger volume of 5.1 million with 50,000 movements for 2014, and with throughput for October of 460,000 – a 12% year-on-year increase on 2013 – it had already handled more than 4.5 million passengers by the end of the 10th month of the year.” Consequently, significant construction and expansion is being planned to manage this increase.

A core element of the overhaul is the extension of the passenger terminal building on the north side of the airport. Along with this will also come a new business jet hangar and the apron will also be upgraded. According to a spokesperson from the airport’s Infrastructure Development Department, “After the extension of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) North side, we expect to accommodate 1.5 million more passengers, adding to a total of 7.5 million passengers that Macau International’s PTB can accommodate.” Plans for land reclamation have been outlined in the Macau International Airport (MIA) Master Plan in order to support further expansion, however a timeline for this has yet to be fixed.
