However, a lack of multi-scale studies on intra-urban green space limits our knowledge of human settlement environments in this region. In this study, a synergistic methodology, including the main process of linear spectral decomposition, vegetation-soil-impervious surface area model, and artificial digital technology, was established to generate a multi-scale of green space (i.e., 15-m resolution intra-urban green components and 0.5-m resolution park region) and investigate multi-scale green space characteristics as well as its ecological service in 12 central cities of the Inner Mongolian Plateau. -

Overview of Hainan Province
Overview of Hainan Province Geographical Location Situated at the southernmost tip of China, Hainan sees Guangdong across the Qiongzhou Strait to the north, Vietnam across theBeibu Bay to the west and Taiwanacross theSouth China Sea to the east. Its neighbors in the South China Sea include the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia in the southeast and south. The jurisdiction of Hainan covers Hainan Island, theXisha (Paracel) Islands, theZhongsha (Macclesfield) Islands and the Nansha (Spratly) Islands as well as the surrounding maritime areas, making it the largest province in China in terms of area. Hainan covers a land area (mainly including Hainan Island and Xisha, Zhongsha and NanshaIslands) of 35,400 square km (that of Hainan Island reaching 33,900 square km) and has a maritime area of about 2 million square km. With the outline like an oval snow pear, Hainan Island has a total area of 33,900 square km (excluding the satellite islands), the second largest island only next to Taiwan Island. Qiongzhou Strait, located between Hainan Island and Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong Province is about 18-nautical-mile wide; while Zengmu Ansha in Nansha Islands is the southernmost territory of China. Administrative Divisions By September 2015, Hainan Province had 27 cities and counties (districts), including four prefectural cities, five county-level cities, four counties, six autonomous counties, eight districts, and 21 townships, 175 towns and 22 sub-district offices (totaling 218). Cities at the prefectural level: Haikou, Sanya, Sansha and Danzhou Cities at the county level: Wuzhishan, Wenchang, Qionghai, Wanningand Dongfang Counties: Ding’an, Tunchang, Chengmai and Lingao Autonomous Counties: Baisha Li Autonomous County, Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Ledong Li Autonomous County, Lingshui Li Autonomous County, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County and Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County Population Calculated according to a sample survey on population changes, the birth rate of the province reached 14.57‰, death rate6.00‰, andnatural growth rate8.57‰in 2015. -

CHAPTER 3 Research for policy development: Industrial clusters in South China1 Rigas Arvanitis and Qiu Haixiong Abstract This research study analyses the development of industrial clusters in three institutional contexts in South China to better understand how policies have been developed and implemented to encourage innovation. The authors trace the growth of private enterprises within these clusters, and note that this growth was assisted by local governments and by links with foreign companies, which were instrumental in upgrading networks of suppliers and bringing in foreign expertise. The research shows that innovation centres have begun to create networks of enterprises, improve innovation capacities, and enhance communication with universities and research centres. In some districts, local government policy has promoted innovation centres, especially during diffi cult economic times, when a need for better quality and higher priced products made sense in China. As such, the innovation centres were mainly oriented toward servicing the local industry, rather than maintaining a competitive edge. The research team concludes that ‘marketized’ research centres have a greater probability of success than innovation centres because they base decisions on selling products. Since 1999, China has actively promoted innovation policy to reinforce the technological capabilities of smaller fi rms, while continuing to promote larger multinational fi rms. At the same time, public research centres have undergone rapid ‘marketization’,2 which has transformed many former public engineering research centres into enterprises. It is much too early to assess this strategy, but the speed with which private fi rms and collective enterprises have acquired, adapted and promoted new products, and new productive processes, is remarkable. -

Drought is a ubiquitous and reoccurring hazard that has wide ranging impacts on society, agriculture and the 11 environment. Drought indices are vital for characterizing the nature and severity of drought hazards, and there have been 12 extensive efforts to identify the most suitable drought indices for drought monitoring and risk assessment. However, to date, 13 little effort has been made to explore which index(s) best represents drought impacts for various sectors in China. This is a 14 critical knowledge gap, as impacts provide important ‘ground truth’ information. The aim of this study is to explore the link 15 between drought indices and drought impacts, using Liaoning province (northeast China) as a case study due to its history of 16 drought occurrence. To achieve this we use independent, but complementary, methods (correlation and random forest analysis) 17 to identify which indices link best to the recorded drought impacts for cities in Liaoning. -

During this work, 11 volcanic rock samples were measured by SHRIMP U-Pb isotope analysis. Based on the reported data on the age of the Mesozoic volcanic rock in West Liaoning Province, in combination with new measurement data, Cretaceous volcanic activities in West Liaoning Province can be divided into five stages, namely 132±1 Ma, 126±1 Ma, 122±2 Ma, 115±2 Ma, and 100±5 Ma. Based on statistical results, this paper concluded that the thinning time of the crust in Northeast China is from 132±1 Ma to 115±2 Ma.
