Arab American Literature and the Ethnic American Landscape: Language, Identity, and Community A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Niven Herro, B.A., M.A. July 2018 Committee Chair: Jennifer Glaser, Ph.D. Committee Members: Lisa Hogeland, Ph.D., Laura Micciche, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation explores the works of contemporary Arab American women writers with a focus on language, identity, and community. I am especially interested in the ways in which the Arab American immigrant experience mirrors that of other ethnic American groups, as demonstrated in their literatures. First, I argue that Randa Jarrar’s debut novel, A Map of Home (2008), which uses language—both Arabic and English—as a source of empowerment, reflects Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of the “new mestiza consciousness.” Comparing the Chinatown community in Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone (1993), to the Muslim community in Mohja Kahf’s The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (2006), reveals the complicated relationships the novels’ characters have with their communities. In both novels, the personal development of their young women protagonists is greatly influenced by their respective communities, which simultaneously serve as positive sites of support and complex sites of difficult negotiations. While the characters in A Map of Home and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf ultimately learn to effectively navigate their hybrid subject positions as both Arabs and Americans, the failure to do so leads to a tragic end for the couple at the center of Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land.

  • Tom Tom Club Has a New Album!
2000 - Tom Tom Club has a New Album! Called THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE FUNKY, the fifth and latest Tom Tom Club album features ten original tracks and two classic covers along with two additional, original dubwise mixes. Recorded and mixed by Doug McKean at the Clubhouse Music Studio controls, the trademark Tom Tom Club sound remains sensuous and fresh: deep slo’ funk with bounce and bubble; pressure-cooking chops with the power of dreams; scratchy rhythms and sinuous melodies, beat-driven and punchy; the lyrics, ironic, funny, witty, spiritually and sexually liberated for a universal generation. The synergistic chemistry of their live band so excited "The Masterminders," Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, they invited into the studio—and got—inspired overdubs and spirited guest appearances by friends who are also gifted musicians. Like a really good machine—no planned obsolescence here, folks—THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE FUNKY is arranged for comfort and built to last. First heard, in order of appearance on the album, is "upful" Jamaican-born, Connecticut Yankee, Mystic Bowie, whose high-energy toasting is a perfect foil for Tina’s tongue-in-cheek girlie vocals, and Chris’s equally laid-back exhortations to party on "Time To Bounce." This song is pure roots hip-hop, all played by Chris and Tina. Next, Robby Aceto’s high-life guitars and prodigy turntablist Kid Ginseng (only just fifteen years old when he overdubbed!) shake it up with catalytic electricity to join Chris and Tina on "Who Feelin It," a vivid tribute in image, word, and sound to international R&B pop, soul, and underground music innovators of hip-hop, past and present.

I pointed out to the aspiring artists and art critics in that workshop that the artist statement is their best opportunity to offer the public the critical terms by which they want their work assessed. I proposed then that artist statements are not the place for ideological or spiritual manifestos but, simply, a brief commentary on the artist’s reasons for making their work. I was not yet aware of INTRODUCTION how formulaic this model was, advocating brevity, descriptive clarity, and provision of historical context. As the MFA publication you and I have worked on has developed over the years, we have maintained our mutual insistence on brevity, but the expansion of the role of the artist statement to include writing about the MFA artists by peers in other academic disciplines has forced me, at least, to rethink the assumptions I used to make about what constitutes “clarity” and “history” in the short form of a statement about the BUZZ SPECTOR artist’s work.
