ANiC Newsletter 6 October 2008 News shorts – ANiC and AEN And then there were 21… In the past eight days, the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) has grown from 18 parishes to 21. The congregations of St George’s (Ottawa) and the Church of St Peter (Hamilton) both voted with overwhelming majorities on Sunday, October 5 to come under the episcopal oversight of Bishop Don and under the Primatial authority of Archbishop Greg. At St George’s the vote was 130 in favour and 27 opposed, while at St Peter’s, 42 voted in favour and one was opposed. The two congregations reached their decisions with remarkable unity of spirit. Even at St George’s where a number of the members did not favour the decision, the meeting was marked by civility, love and a commitment to continued worship together. Diocese tries to discredit St Aidan’s unanimous vote Immediately following St Aidan’s unanimous vote on September 28, the diocese began to question the legitimacy of the vote. The Rt Rev Robert Bennett, of the Huron Diocese, is reported to have said he was "concerned that they [St Aidan’s] may have not used due diligence to make sure the whole membership was invited" to the meeting. In fact, the turnout for the meeting was higher than at past vestries, and while some eligible vestry members were unable to attend due to other commitments, many have since indicated their solid support in writing. (The Canons of the Diocese of Huron do not allow for proxy votes.) ANiC welcomes more clergy On Sunday, Bishop Don ordained two deacons – Jess Cantelon and Ronda Nychka. -

Because the war reached Greater London through bombings, raiioning, evacuation, the threat of invasion, and the total mobilization of the population, many of the institutions that were integrai to traditional notions of community in British society were affected. -

5.1 Racial Justice: A paper for discussion, to be adopted as the basis of the Diocese in Europe’s strategy in this area of work. “BREATHING LIFE” AN INVITATION TO SHARE IN BELONGING TOGETHER THROUGH RACIAL JUSTICE Reflections and Recommendations from the Diocesan Working Group (WG) Introduction The death of the African-American citizen George Floyd at the hands of police officers on 25th May in Minneapolis - in the midst of an already volatile climate caused by the COVID-19 crisis - gave rise to waves of protest across the United States under the movement of Black Lives Matter. Archbishops and bishops of the Church of England who rallied to support the movement have said that it is time to “own up to” and “repent” of white privilege, within the Church as in other parts of society (see article by Hattie Williams, Church Times, dt. 12th June 2020). In other parts of the Western world solidarity protests followed. Earlier sporadic outbreaks of protest and a ground swell of discontent against widespread racial injustice in societies and their institutions suddenly peaked in intensity and persistence, regrettably also in violence. The media highlighted the theme. The issue of racial injustice could no longer be side-lined; it demanded that it be confronted, the more so as there have been other such incidents which have followed close on the heel of George Floyd in the US, the UK and in Europe. Any violent expressions causing harm to life and property cannot be condoned. Violence cannot be met with violence. Just as unequivocally it needs to be stated that: Every human life matters equally. -

Primates Meeting Communiqué, February 2007 1. We, the Primates and Moderators of the Anglican Communion, gathered for mutual consultation and prayer at Dar es Salaam between 15th and 19th February 2007 at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury and as guests of the Primate of Tanzania, Archbishop Donald Leo Mtetemela. The meeting convened in an atmosphere of mutual graciousness as the Primates sought together to seek the will of God for the future life of the Communion. We are grateful for the warm hospitality and generosity of Archbishop Donald and his Church members, many of whom have worked hard to ensure that our visit has been pleasant and comfortable, including our travel to Zanzibar on the Sunday. 2. The Archbishop of Canterbury welcomed to our number fourteen new primates, and on the Wednesday before our meeting started, he led the new primates in an afternoon of discussion about their role. We give thanks for the ministry of those primates who have completed their term of office. 3. Over these days, we have also spent time in prayer and Bible Study, and reflected upon the wide range of mission and service undertaken across the Communion. While the tensions that we face as a Communion commanded our attention, the extensive discipleship of Anglicans across the world reminds us of our first task to respond to God’s call in Christ. We are grateful for the sustaining prayer which has been offered across the Communion as we meet. 4. On Sunday 18th February, we travelled to the island of Zanzibar, where we joined a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at Christ Church Cathedral, built on the site of the old slave market. -
Anglicans and the Interpretation of Scripture
Southwark Cathedral Lecture July 3rd 2008 ANGLICANS AND THE INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE INTRODUCTION – BIBLE, BELIEF AND WORSHIP Original title: “The Anglican Understanding and Use of Scripture” I queried the use of “the” and the singular (in “understanding and use”). I was always taught that Anglicans have no separate doctrine and belief – this is rather a commonly repeated tenet of Anglicans. Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher: “We have no doctrine of our own – we only possess the Catholic doctrine of the Catholic Church enshrined in the Catholic creeds and those creeds we hold without addition or diminution.”1 Bishop Stephen Neil: “There are no special Anglican doctrines, there is no particular Anglican theology.”2 This view was challenged by Bishop Stephen Sykes in an essay originally written for the Lambeth Conference of 1988 and reprinted his Unashamed Anglicanism, in which he argues at least for an Anglican understanding of the church, if not doctrine, which also includes a commitment to the public reading of scripture.3 I would be interested to know how Canon Jane Steen’s lecture handled this topic of Anglican Belief last week! (not yet on the website). But at the very least, even granting Bishop Sykes’ point about an Anglican understanding of the church, there is no one, single Anglican doctrine for the understanding and use of scripture. Furthermore, the use of the singular “scripture” itself is somewhat problematic. After all, ta biblia in Greek, the word which gives us our singular word ‘Bible’, is actually plural, and means ‘the books’ so the phrase, “the scriptures” is a much better translation of ta biblia – and recognizes the essential plurality of the scriptures, namely that the Bible is a library containing some 66 books, written in several different languages, in a variety of literary genres and types (narrative, poetry, drama, prophetic oracles, biographies, letters and so forth) over a period 1 G.F.
