Baptists, Bishops and the Sacerdotal Ministry
374 BAPTISTS, BISHOPS AND THE SACERDOTAL MINISTRY As a Baptist who before my ordination frequently presided at the Lord's Table - and on one occasion in the presence of no less than four Anglican priests (one of whom is now secretary to the Board of Mission and Unity) - I am by no means a l,ikely advocate of a fully sacerdotal ministry. Nevertheless, my view of ministry is what I would call a "high" view, which, combined with my in terest in symbol, ritual and liturgy has led some to label me a "Bapto-Catholic". I pray, however, that my view of ministry is not "high" because of personal pride in my own office, but out of humble recognition that despite my unworthiness, Christ has seen fit to call me and equip me as a Minister of Word and Sacra ment. I believe, moreover, that my "high" view of the ministry is consistent with,much of Baptist history. Indeed, the Baptist Statement of 1948 declared that "Baptists have had from the be ginning an exalted concept of the office of the christian minis- :' ter".l I will even go so far as to say (being in a provocative mood) that episcopacy - that highest of all concepts of ministry - also has a place in Baptist tradition. I will begin my defence where all good Baptists begin, with the Bible, by examining briefly the Biblical basis of episcope. In I Peter 2.25, Christ himself is described as the episcopos of our souis (translated as "guardian" in the R.S.V.). He is the Over-seer of the Church, His Body, of which He is the Head. -

What is Gafcon – Russell Powell I do sympathise with you this afternoon sitting there on those chairs! Please stay with us this afternoon because I think what Phillip has to say next is extremely important. While I have sympathised with you, I will give you an opportunity to sympathise with me. What we will spend two and a half hours listening to this afternoon is what I have two minutes to brief journalists on, and what the archbishop has 20 seconds to comment on in the media. Not an easy task. My purpose over the next couple of minutes is to unfold some of the aims of the Global Anglican Future Conference and then some of the detail. The speakers before me have set the scene in which it takes place. The organisers, including Archbishop Jensen have been meeting this week in England. In their preparations they have restated the goals of the conference that will be useful if I mention here. The Goals are – 1. Provide an opportunity for fellowship, to continue to experience and proclaim the transforming love of Christ. 2. Develop a renewed understanding of our identity as Anglican Christians within our current context. 3. Prepare for an Anglican future in which the Gospel is un-compromised and Christ- centred mission a top priority. The idea for such a conference came out of a meeting of Primates and Bishops in Nairobi in December. The event was not designed to be an alternative Lambeth – if you had wanted to do that you would have put it on at the same time as Lambeth. -

THE CHICAGO-LAMBETH QUADRILATERAL: DEVELOPMENT IN AN ANGLICAN APPROACH TO CHRISTIAN UNITY Robert B. Slocum Theology, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI PRECIS The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral has served as the primary reference point and working document of the Anglican Communion for ecumenical Christian reunion. It identifies four essential elements for Christian unity in terms of scriptures, creeds, sacraments, and the Historic Episcopate. The Quadrilateral is based on the ecumenical thought and leadership of William Reed Huntington, an Episcopal priest who proposed the Quadrilateral in his book The Church.Idea:/In Essay toward Unity (1870) and who was the moving force behind approval of the Quadrilateral by the House of Bishops of the 1886 General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was subsequently approved with modifications by the Lambeth Conference of 1888 and finally reaffirmed in its Lambeth form by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1895. The Quadrilateral has been at the heart of Anglican ecumenical discussions and relationships since its approval Interpretation of the meaning of the Quadrilateral has undergone considerable development in its more than 100-year history. -

Missional Imperatives for the Anglican Church in the Caribbean The Most Rev. Drexel Gomez, Retired Archbishop of the West Indies Introduction The Church in The Province Of The West Indies (CPWI) is a member church of the Anglican Communion (AC). The AC is comprised of thirty-eight (38) member churches throughout the global community, and constitutes the third largest grouping of Christians in the world, after the Roman Catholic Communion, and the Orthodox Churches. The AC membership is ordinarily defined by churches being in full communion with the See of Canterbury, and which recognize the Archbishop of Canterbury as Primus Inter Pares (Chief Among Equals) amongst the Primates of the member churches. The commitment to the legacy of Apostolic Tradition, Succession, and Progression serves to undergird not only the characteristics of Anglicanism itself, provides the ongoing allegiance to some Missional Imperatives, driven and sustained by God’s enlivening Spirit. Anglican Characteristics Anglicanism has always been characterized by three strands of Christian emphases – Catholic, Reformed, and Evangelical. Within recent times, the AC has attempted to adopt specific methods of accentuating its Evangelical character for example by designating a Decade of Evangelism. More recently, the AC has sought to provide for itself a new matrix for integrating its culture of worship, work, and witness in keeping with its Gospel proclamation and teaching. The AC more recently determined that there should also be a clear delineation of some Marks of Mission. It agreed eventually on what it has termed the Five Marks of Mission. They are: (1) To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom; (2) To teach, baptize and nurture new believers; (3) To respond to human need by loving service; (4) To seek to transform unjust structures in society to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation; (5) To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth. -

ATR/90:2 Theological Education for the Anglican Communion: The Promises and Challenges of TEAC J. Eileen Scully* Archbishop Rowan Williams has spoken often and strongly of the high priority theological education ought to have in the Anglican Communion. The assignment of such a place within a province’s set of priorities finds its meaning in its very concrete local commit- ments, engagement with local contexts, the setting of standards, and the provision of resources. Setting such a priority for the life of the Anglican Communion as a whole means including and extending particular provincial concerns into the international forum. With that extension come the particular challenges inherent in any Commu- nion-wide discussion. Within and across our diversities, do we have common language, meaning, and vision about what theological edu- cation is, or about Anglican ways of doing ministry, mission, and the- ological education? The vehicle set up to begin the Communion-level work on theo- logical education is the Primates’ Working Party Theological Educa- tion for the Anglican Communion (TEAC). TEAC is one particular initiative, begun in and responsible to the meeting of Primates, around which has grown a Theological Studies department within the Communion office, committed beyond the work of TEAC to sharing information and developing extensive web-based resources. ANiC Newsletter 6 October 2008 News shorts – ANiC and AEN And then there were 21… In the past eight days, the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) has grown from 18 parishes to 21. The congregations of St George’s (Ottawa) and the Church of St Peter (Hamilton) both voted with overwhelming majorities on Sunday, October 5 to come under the episcopal oversight of Bishop Don and under the Primatial authority of Archbishop Greg. At St George’s the vote was 130 in favour and 27 opposed, while at St Peter’s, 42 voted in favour and one was opposed. The two congregations reached their decisions with remarkable unity of spirit. Even at St George’s where a number of the members did not favour the decision, the meeting was marked by civility, love and a commitment to continued worship together. Diocese tries to discredit St Aidan’s unanimous vote Immediately following St Aidan’s unanimous vote on September 28, the diocese began to question the legitimacy of the vote. The Rt Rev Robert Bennett, of the Huron Diocese, is reported to have said he was "concerned that they [St Aidan’s] may have not used due diligence to make sure the whole membership was invited" to the meeting. In fact, the turnout for the meeting was higher than at past vestries, and while some eligible vestry members were unable to attend due to other commitments, many have since indicated their solid support in writing. (The Canons of the Diocese of Huron do not allow for proxy votes.) ANiC welcomes more clergy On Sunday, Bishop Don ordained two deacons – Jess Cantelon and Ronda Nychka. -
St. Patrick's Church
There was only one church in the entire central area of Governor’s Harbour. On Archdeacon Jrew’s visitation in May and June of 1847, he administered the sacrament for the St. Patrick’s Church first time in this church. The population then made a tremendous increase and the people of Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas this area made a request that Fr. Richard Chambers who was the priest of five islands, be restricted to Eleuthera alone. During this time, however, there was a terrible hurricane and the church was completely destroyed, creating the need for a new church. On January 2, 1892, the new Anglican Church that residents of Governor’s Harbour had so long waited and worked for was finally begun. The site was laid out, the foundation dug out, and willing hands were sent to work. The Church’s outside measurements are 76 ft. by 40 ft.; because of the walls being 2 ft. thick, the inside measurements are 72 ft. by 35 ft. The foundation wall is 3 ft. thick. Hence the work was expensive but necessary in case of hurricanes or other bad types of weather. The cornerstone of the new church had now been laid under the leadership of Fr. Smith (who served 1886-1903). On completion in 1893 and consecration Nov. 26, 1894 by Lord Bishop Churton, Fr. Browne, Fr. Blum and the current Rector, Fr. Smith, this building was described as “A very substantial, large and beautiful church.” The cost was about £1,000, the money being gathered from the previous eight years by the means of church sales, collections, donations from residents of Governor’s Harbour and from friends in England.
