On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.

My research questions whether, in pursuing alternatives to conventional, commercial architectural photography, a more dynamic view can be revealed, one that is closer to the experience of encountering the built environment: episodic, temporal and in flux. I believe temporality and motion are indicative of the life of a building: both habitually omitted from traditional commercial representations. Practical and conceptual challenges directed me to techniques depicting ‘still’ and ‘moving’, that intersect with several of photography’s discourses: the evidential value of images constructed over time, the perception of movement in still photography and negotiations between description and creativity.

    “What we do is not art, it is definitely storytelling”: An interview with producer Thomas Hellum on NRK’s Minutt for minutt television series1 A seven-hour train journey from Oslo to Bergen; twenty-four hours of salmon fishing on the first day of the season; a sixty-hour marathon of psalm-singing; 134 hours aboard a coastal ferry. “Slow TV” has emerged as the label for a series of long-duration programmes showcasing Norway’s landscape and traditions, conceived in 2009 as an experiment for NRK, the national public service broadcaster. Most of the shows have attracted over one million viewers, a fifth of the Norwegian population. In 2013, Slow TV (or sakte-tv in Norwegian) was declared Word of the Year by the Norwegian Language Council, and NRK’s international publicity webpage for the series also adopts this term as its title (NRK 2014). As a brand, Slow TV is useful as a marketing tool in an era of slow cinema, slow food, and anglophone fascination with cosy Scandinavian lifestyle concepts such as hygge (see Thomson 2016). However, focusing on the ostensible slowness of the programmes tends to elide what is genuinely radical about the series: the long duration of these televisual events, and the implications of their length for their design, production, broadcasting, consumption and reception. Indeed, the interest of the producers in experimenting with duration as opposed to pace is implicit in the Norwegian name for the series: Minutt for minutt (minute by minute).     10.1515/nor-2015-0008 Nordicom Review 36 (2015) 1, pp. 95-108 Slow Television A Successful Innovation in Public Service Broadcasting Roel Puijk Abstract Public-service broadcasters are compelled to seek innovative ways to fulfil their public- service functions in an increasingly competitive environment. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) has been experimenting with new programme formats and cross-media concepts. The concept of slow television was developed by the regional office in Bergen. On July 16, 2011, they started a five-day live broadcast from one of the cruise ships that sailed up the Norwegian coast from Bergen in southern Norway to Kirkenes near the Rus- sian border. The broadcast was a huge success. I take this programme as a case study and provide an analysis from the perspective of innovation within public-service broadcasting. The article addresses the following questions: 1) In what way was the programme innova- tive? 2) How was the programme accepted and produced? 3) What accounts for the success of the broadcast in terms of number of viewers and popular engagement? Keywords: slow television, public service broadcasting, innovation, production, interactiv- ity, Norway Introduction Television is changing – digitization, new platforms and increased competition are undermining traditional ways of producing television. In the post-television era new ways of reaching and engaging viewers are being sought in order to stand out in the ever-intensifying battle to win viewers’ attention. One of the strategies that commercial channels have used in particular is the introduction of different reality concepts in which ordinary people participate in situations that are often unreal.
