On his way, Lu Zhishen came across a manor where an old man was being forced to marry his daughter to a bandit chieftain. Lu Zhishen told the old man he could persuade the bandit to change his mind and give up the marriage, so the old man allowed him to wait for the bandit in the bridal chamber. And of course, by “persuade,” Lu Zhishen meant “I’ll make the guy think he’s coming to meet his wife in the dark and then beat him to a bloody pulp, and I’ll do it totally naked, just for more laughs.” But when all was said and done, no one else was laughing. Not the bandit chieftain, who ran back to his mountain hideout bruised and bloodied, and especially not the old man, Grandpa Liu (2), who was dreading the death and destruction that will no doubt rain down his house when said bandit chieftain returns with a vengeance. After Lu Zhishen spared everyone further trauma by putting his clothes back on, Grandpa Liu said to him, “I thought you were going to talk to the bandit and convince him to change his mind. I didn’t know you were going to give him a beating. Now he must have gone off to round up the rest of his men to come slaughter me and my family.” “Sir, don’t worry,” Zhishen said.

At times, the intention is to record, describe and analyze the oral tradition of Shandong kuaishu, which has not been recorded in detail in English language scholarly literature. At other times, the purpose is to develop a pedagogical model informed by the experiences and transmission techniques of the community of study. The ultimate goal is to use the knowledge and experience gained in this study to advance our understanding of and ability to achieve advanced levels of Chinese language proficiency and cultural competence. Through a combination of the knowledge gained from written sources, participant observation, and first-hand performance of Shandong kuaishu, this dissertation shows that complex performances of segments of Chinese culture drawn from everyday life can be constructed through a regimen of performance based training. Pada saat bayi ini lahir di atas rumah kelihatan seekor burung besar berterbangan dan berteriak-teriak. Sebab itu Yue He menamakan puteranya “Fei” (Hui-hokkian) yang berarti “terbang”. Masa kecil Yue Fei dilukisan penuh dengan penderitaan. Belum genap sebulan umurnya sungai huang he meluap dan membanjiri desanya. Ibunya menggendong yue fei kecil dan duduk di dalam sebuah gentong besar bersama dengan ayahnya dan terapung-apung hingga akhirnya tiba di suatu tempat yang aman. Karena sawah ladang tempat menggantungkan hidupnya sehari-hari rusak binasa, kehidupan yue fei dan ayahnya sengsara sekali. Sejak yue fei mulai berjalan, ia sudah membantu ayahnya mencari kayu bakar dan mencabit rumput untuk di jual, sisanya untuk memasak nasi dan makan ternak.

I argue that by adapting the well-known patriotic story of General Yue Fei in Chinese history, Zhou Yingfang suggests new directions in grand historical narrative in her own voice and from her own perspective. Negotiating the writing conventions of earlier legends, she turns the stereotyped masculine image of Yue Fei into a hero in both public and domestic settings.
